The Effect Of National Origin And Skin Color On Playing Time In The Wnba, Nola Agha, David Berri, Akash Bhatt, Jennifer Van Gilder

This article uses data from the 1997-2022 seasons to investigate the role of bias in the distribution of playing time in the WNBA. We evaluate national origin, a fixed and objective measure, and improve upon past uses of subjective, perception-based measures of race by using a more objective measure of skin tone. More specifically, via a fixed-effect estimation of 2,949 WNBA player-year combinations we find no evidence that the national origin of either players or coaches is related to the provision of playing time. Previous studies of college athlete compensation have generally focused on the “revenue sports” of football and men’s basketball. Hence, wage exploitation is often considered a “man’s game.” In the 50 years since Title IX, many women’s college sports have reported millions of dollars in revenue, suggesting wage exploitation is possible in college softball. Data on 19,760 athletes from 294 universities from 2012-2021, combined with two different sources of athletic revenue reach the same conclusion: wage exploitation exists in college softball. Furthermore, thousands of players generate more revenue in college than the wages they are likely to earn playing professional softball.

We develop a measure of disclosure quality using disaggregation of financial statement items from the Form 10-K XBRL filing. Our measure (ITEMS) extends Chen, Miao, and Shevlin’s (2015),DQ measure and is distinct from R. Hoitash and U. Hoitash’s (2018) ARC measure. Our measure provides a simple measure of disaggregation by counting the balance sheet and income statement line items, it does not depend on the data aggregators’ collection process and is readily available shortly after the Form 10-K is filed. We validate ITEMS by showing that firm fundamentals correlate to ITEMS in the predicted direction using …

This study examines the impact of leadership styles on attitudes and intentions to reduce the gender pay gap within nonprofit organizations (NPOs). NPOs are economic engines existing to improve individual lives, communities, and the collective society. The gender pay gap is defined as the difference between median earnings of women relative to median earnings of men. While NPOs employ women at a higher rate and tend to exhibit a smaller gender pay gap, a gap exists and is relatively unstudied within the sector. This three-paper dissertation investigates two mechanisms by which accountants can share their narrative and express the truth: data visualization and whistleblowing. The first paper is a comprehensive literature review of the quantitative data visualization research in accounting. We find that accounting research is highlighting data visualization usage for performance management, financial disclosure, system design, risk assessment, impression management, and fraud and forensics. While the existing contributions to data visualization research are substantive and important to accounting practice, many opportunities for data visualization remain under-or unexplored. This dissertation examines how retail investors interact with three different financial market intermediaries – online stock brokerages, financial analysts, and auditors.

The first paper explores how trading restrictions impact retail investor perceptions of the brokerage that imposed the restriction contingent on the subsequent price trajectory of the stock. We find that when stock prices increase following a restriction (a non-gain), participants are more likely to react negatively to the brokerage than when stock prices decrease (a non-loss). This relationship is moderated by participants’ level of I-FoMO – or fear of missing out on investment information. These findings provide practical insight …

Purpose: The aim of this article was to identify differences in the emotional tone of verbal messages published on the Facebook accounts of selected companies within the fashion industry, focusing on organizations with an active presence on this platform.

Design/methodology/approach: The sentiment analysis was conducted using the CLARIN software suite. Over a three-month period in 2023, companies’ posts and users’ comments were collected and analyzed. Introduction: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), now known as Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) by government authorities, is a severe postnatal withdrawal condition caused by opioid exposure during pregnancy. NAS is diagnosed every 25 minutes in the United States. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine was used to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) and NAS. The MOTHER trial found that utilizing buprenorphine to treat mother OUD during pregnancy led to significant decreases in LOS and length of therapy.
