You're On Mute - How The Shift From In-Person To Virtual Board Meetings Impacts Board Governance And Communication In Nonprofit Associations, Theresa Hurley May 2021

You're On Mute - How The Shift From In-Person To Virtual Board Meetings Impacts Board Governance And Communication In Nonprofit Associations, Theresa Hurley

Master's Projects and Capstones

Because of the Covid19 pandemic meeting restrictions that started in March 2020, almost all nonprofit boards had to move to virtual board meetings. Through a literature review, expert interviews and a survey of nonprofit association Executive Directors, Chief Executive Officers and board members, this capstone explores the impact of the shift from in-person to virtual board meetings on board governance and board communication and dynamics for nonprofit associations. Some findings were positive - virtual meetings are more cost-effective, are better attended and more convenient and efficient than in-person meetings. Other findings were negative - multiple communication challenges inherent in the …

Deai In Nonprofits: Through The Lens Of Museums And Gardens, Brittany Jones May 2021

Deai In Nonprofits: Through The Lens Of Museums And Gardens, Brittany Jones

Master's Projects and Capstones

This research works to understand and identify diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) practices within nonprofits through the examination of museums and public gardens. Museums and public gardens provide a generous example of nonprofit organizations that must dutifully serve the communities which surround them, as well as examine internal practices and structures. As the momentum of the racial justice movement increased in 2020, following horrific tragedies in the U.S., the work around DEAI is more relevant than ever. Through this research, identification of barriers and challenges which prevent organizations from doing DEAI work is examined. This research is carried out …

The Environmental Mandate Of Heaven: Confucian Global Governance And Environmentalism In Chinese Policies, Wanchu Changliao May 2021

The Environmental Mandate Of Heaven: Confucian Global Governance And Environmentalism In Chinese Policies, Wanchu Changliao

Master's Projects and Capstones

Environmental degradation is a contemporary issue that has gained a lot of attention in recent history for China. The developing country’s industrial revolution has led to unprecedented carbon emissions, and despite efforts to curb population growth, China’s expanding and aging population has presented the country with numerous challenges. In this essay, I examine China’s environmental issues and the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) policy decisions through the lens of Confucian role relations. Through this lens, and given the multitude of challenges China is facing, it may be argued that the PRC is acting out its role as the leader and …

Diversifying Nuclear Technology: A Technical Analysis On Small Modular Reactors And Its Impact On Nuclear Energy Policy, Carolina Lugo Mejia, Marcos Lugo May 2021

Diversifying Nuclear Technology: A Technical Analysis On Small Modular Reactors And Its Impact On Nuclear Energy Policy, Carolina Lugo Mejia, Marcos Lugo

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

The energy policy debate in the United States has revolved around the diversification of energy sources while promoting advantageous economic profits. One drive for this has been the discussion of anthropogenic, environmental endangerment concerns (Vlassopoulous 2011, 104). However, despite the environmental concerns, the U.S. has for some time only relied on one type of energy source—fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are categorized as natural gas, coal, petroleum, and other gases responsible (U.S. Energy Administration 2019). Natural gas is responsible for 38.4%, coal for 23.4%, petroleum for 0.4%, and other gases for 0.3% of the U.S.’s electrical generation (U.S. Energy Administration 2019). …

Analysis Of Gaps In Feline Ectoparasiticide Purchases From Veterinary Clinics In The United States, Robert Lavan, Dorothy Normile, Imran Husain, Amita Singh, Kathleen Heaney May 2021

Analysis Of Gaps In Feline Ectoparasiticide Purchases From Veterinary Clinics In The United States, Robert Lavan, Dorothy Normile, Imran Husain, Amita Singh, Kathleen Heaney

Publications and Research

Background: The study objective was to examine cat owner ectoparasiticide purchases in the United States and estimate the impact of purchase gaps on timely ectoparasite protection administration. These purchase gaps lead to periods of time when cats are unprotected from ectoparasites.

Methods: Ectoparasiticide purchase transactions for individual cats from 671 U.S. veterinary clinics from January 1, 2017 through June 30, 2019 were evaluated to determine time “gaps” between doses of ectoparasiticides purchased in a defined 12-month period. Ectoparasiticides examined were topically applied products that contained fluralaner, fipronil/(S)-methoprene/pyriproxyfen, imidacloprid/pyriproxyfen or selamectin as active ingredients. The duration of protection following administration of …

U.S. Reit Industry Profitability: A Bennet Decomposition Of Industry Dynamics, Zhilan Feng, Stephen M. Miller, Dogan Tirtiroglu May 2021

U.S. Reit Industry Profitability: A Bennet Decomposition Of Industry Dynamics, Zhilan Feng, Stephen M. Miller, Dogan Tirtiroglu

Molasky Family Department of Economics and Real Estate Faculty Research

This paper considers the aggregate profitability performance of the REIT industry. The aggregate performance depends on the underlying microeconomic dynamics within an industry – the growth of individual REITs (the within ef-fect), the reallocation between existing REITs (the between effect), the entry of new REITs (the entry effect), and the exit of the existing REITs (the exit effect). We apply an extended Bennet (1920) dynamic decomposition on the REIT industry’s return on equity (ROE) and study the annual data on U.S. Equity REITs for the 1989 to 2015 period and various REIT industry specific sub-sample periods. Bailey et al.’s (1992) …

The Convenience Yield Determinants Of Corn Futures, Christopher R. Delong May 2021

The Convenience Yield Determinants Of Corn Futures, Christopher R. Delong

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the convenience yield determinants of corn futures. The estimated spot price and convenience yield are derived from Gibson and Schwartz’s (1990) two-factor model, and a deterministic seasonal component is added to the convenience yield. Numerous potentially novel determinants are regressed against the convenience yield while controlling for the spot price. The spot price is highly significant in all univariate regressions and is the main driver of changes in convenience yield. This research confirms the theory of storage, provides conflicting results regarding net hedging pressure, shows significant results for novel determinants, and proves that …

Emergence And Constraints Of Enterprise Platform Silos For Online Interactions: A Case Study From Ghana Before And During Covid-19, John Effah May 2021

Emergence And Constraints Of Enterprise Platform Silos For Online Interactions: A Case Study From Ghana Before And During Covid-19, John Effah

The African Journal of Information Systems

The purpose of this study is to understand the emergence and constraints of enterprise platform silos for online interactions at the organizational level. Information systems (IS) research has focused more on external platforms without silos. As a result, not much is known about internal platforms and silos at the organizational level and how they constrain online interactions, especially in the developing economic context of Africa. This study follows an interpretive, qualitative case study methodology and the encounter-episode process model to investigate the case of using enterprise platform silos in an organization in Ghana, before and during Covid-19. The findings show …

Video Feedback, Megan Paul May 2021

Video Feedback, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is video feedback?

Video feedback refers here to a training method that involves giving learners feedback on their skills using a video recording of their behavior in a real or simulated environment. Though video feedback is used in a variety of settings (e.g., athletic, parenting, or surgical training), the focus here is on skill development among professionals that engage in interpersonal interactions (e.g., teachers, social workers, nurses; Fukkink et al., 2011). Targeted skills may be broad (e.g., empathy, nervousness, active listening) or narrow (body posture, eye contact, gestures, use of open questions). The process typically involves recording learners as …

Integration Of Blockchain Technology Into Supply Network For Resilient And Efficient Acquisition [Video], Adrian Gheorghe, Farinaz Sabz Ali Pour, Unal Tatar, Omer Faruk Keskin, Cornel Vintila, Laura Manciu May 2021

Integration Of Blockchain Technology Into Supply Network For Resilient And Efficient Acquisition [Video], Adrian Gheorghe, Farinaz Sabz Ali Pour, Unal Tatar, Omer Faruk Keskin, Cornel Vintila, Laura Manciu

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

In the modern acquisition, it is unrealistic to consider single entities as producing and delivering a product independently. Acquisitions usually take place through supply networks. Resiliency, efficiency, and effectiveness of supply networks directly contribute to the acquisition system's resiliency, efficiency, and effectiveness. All the involved firms form a part of a supply network essential to producing the product or service. The decision-makers have to look for new methodologies for supply chain management. Blockchain technology introduces new methods of decentralization and delegation of services, which can transform supply chains and result in a more resilient, efficient, and effective supply chain. This …

Women Entrepreneurs In China: Dialectical Discourses, Situated Activities, And The (Re)Production Of Gender And Entrepreneurship, Zhenyu Tian May 2021

Women Entrepreneurs In China: Dialectical Discourses, Situated Activities, And The (Re)Production Of Gender And Entrepreneurship, Zhenyu Tian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the number of women entrepreneurs on the rise globally, the business world and the identity of the entrepreneur remain to be normed masculine and male gender stereotyped. This male gender stereotyping situates women who practice entrepreneurship in disadvantages, limiting their access to resources on which they depend to make meaning of their activities and identities. This imbalanced masculine gender order also manifests in China’s economy. Women entrepreneurs in China face complex contradictions and challenges when navigating an arena that privileges men and masculinity. However, not much is known about the micro-dynamics of Chinese women’s entrepreneurial experiences in light of …

Lady Luck: Anthropomorphized Luck Creates Perceptions Of Risk-Sharing And Drives Pursuit Of Risky Alternatives, Katina Kulow, Thomas Kramer, Kara Bentley May 2021

Lady Luck: Anthropomorphized Luck Creates Perceptions Of Risk-Sharing And Drives Pursuit Of Risky Alternatives, Katina Kulow, Thomas Kramer, Kara Bentley

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We examine decision-making under risk as a function of the degree to which consumers anthropomorphize their luck. We propose that consumers make riskier financial decisions when they anthropomorphize (vs. objectify) their luck and that this effect occurs because humanizing luck engenders a perceived sharing of risk in the presence of “lady luck.” A series of experiments shows that consumers among whom anthropomorphized versus objectified luck is salient display greater risk-taking in financial, but not social, decisions. These effects are heightened among consumers who frequently engage in risky decision-making and are driven by perceptions of risk-sharing produced by anthropomorphized luck. Collectively, …

How Covid-19 Has Accelerated The Shift Towards A More Sustainable Fashion Industry, Samantha Frances Casey May 2021

How Covid-19 Has Accelerated The Shift Towards A More Sustainable Fashion Industry, Samantha Frances Casey

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Sustainability in fast fashion is a pertinent issue as the fashion industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industries. Fashion retailers have started to integrate sustainability initiatives, but consumer preference is vital to making firms change their practices. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, worldwide lockdowns exposed the fragility of the consumer-driven fast-fashion business model. This thesis will examine how COVID-19 has and will continue to impact sustainability in the fashion industry. More specifically, this thesis will examine the implications of consumer sustainability preferences brought about by the pandemic. These implications accelerate the preexisting sustainability trends …

Job Seekers’ Impression Management On Facebook: Scale Development, Antecedents, And Outcomes, Vanessa Myers, Jennifer P. B. Price, Nicolas Roulin, Alexandra Duval, Shayda Sobhani May 2021

Job Seekers’ Impression Management On Facebook: Scale Development, Antecedents, And Outcomes, Vanessa Myers, Jennifer P. B. Price, Nicolas Roulin, Alexandra Duval, Shayda Sobhani

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Many organizations rely on social media like Facebook as a screening or selection tool; however, research still largely lags behind practice. For instance, little is known about how individuals are strategically utilizing their Facebook profile while applying for jobs. This research examines job seekers’ impression management (IM) tactics on Facebook, personality traits associated with IM use, and associations between IM and job-search outcomes. Results from two complementary studies demonstrate that job seekers engage in three main Facebook IM tactics: defensive, assertive deceptive, and assertive honest IM. Job seekers lower in Honesty–Humility use more Facebook IM tactics, whereas those higher in …

The Effect Of Organizational Culture On Faking In The Job Interview, Damian Canagasuriam, Nicolas Roulin May 2021

The Effect Of Organizational Culture On Faking In The Job Interview, Damian Canagasuriam, Nicolas Roulin

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Deceptive impression management (i.e., faking) may alter interviewers’ perceptions of applicants’ qualifications and, consequently, decrease the predictive validity of the job interview. In examining faking antecedents, research has given little attention to situational variables. Using a between-subjects experiment, this research addressed that gap by examining whether organizational culture impacted both the extent to which applicants faked and the manner in which they faked during a job interview. Analyses of variance revealed that organizational culture did not affect the extent to which applicants faked. However, when taking into account applicants’ perceptions of the ideal candidate, organizational culture was found to indirectly …

Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire: How Verbal Deception Cues Signal Deceptive Versus Honest Impression Management And Influence Interview Ratings, Lenke Roth, Ute-Christine Klehe, Gloria Willhardt May 2021

Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire: How Verbal Deception Cues Signal Deceptive Versus Honest Impression Management And Influence Interview Ratings, Lenke Roth, Ute-Christine Klehe, Gloria Willhardt

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Impression management (IM), especially deceptive IM (faking), is a cause for concern in selection interviews. The current study combines findings on lie detection with signaling theory to address how candidates’ deceptive versus honest IM shows in verbal deception cues, which then relate to interview ratings of candidates’ interview performance. After completing a structured interview rated by two trained interviewers, 182 candidates reported their deceptive and honest IM. Verbal deception cues (plausibility, verbal uncertainty) were coded from video recordings. Results supported the hypotheses: Deceptive IM directly raised interviewer ratings (intended positive signal) but lowered the responses’ plausibility and enhanced verbal uncertainties …

Unintended Consequences Of Interview Faking: Impact On Perceived Fit And Affective Outcomes, Brooke D. Charbonneau, Deborah M. Powell, Jeffrey R. Spence, Sean T. Lyons May 2021

Unintended Consequences Of Interview Faking: Impact On Perceived Fit And Affective Outcomes, Brooke D. Charbonneau, Deborah M. Powell, Jeffrey R. Spence, Sean T. Lyons

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Drawing on signalling theory, we propose that use of deceptive impression management (IM) in the employment interview could produce false signals, and individuals hired based on such signals may incur consequences once they are on the job—such as poor perceived fit. We surveyed job applicants who recently interviewed and received a job to investigate the relationship between use of deceptive IM in the interview and subsequent perceived personjob and person-organization fit, stress, well-being, and employee engagement. In a twophase study, 206 job applicants self-reported their use of deceptive IM in their interviews at Time 1, and their perceived person–job and …

Identifying Faking On Forced-Choice Personality Items Using Mouse Tracking, Irina Kuzmich, Charles Scherbaum May 2021

Identifying Faking On Forced-Choice Personality Items Using Mouse Tracking, Irina Kuzmich, Charles Scherbaum

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

This research utilizes mouse tracking as a potential behavioral method to examine cognitive processes underlying faking on forced-choice personality inventories. Mouse tracking is a method from social categorization research that captures a variety of metrics related to motor movements, which are linked to cognitive processing. To explore the utility of this method, we examined differences in the mouse tracking metrics of those instructed to respond honestly or to fake. Our findings show that there is a distinguishable difference in the behavioral response of those who are faking when responding to pairs of personality descriptors presented in a forced-choice format compared …
