This paper aims to examine how modern, digital era customers in a business-to-consumer (B2C) setting prioritize salesperson-customer orientation attributes when evaluating their expectations regarding interactions with salespeople, as well as their impact on positive and negative word-of-mouth. In addition, the research further investigates which negative salesperson attributes have an impact on overall customer experience and satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Role theory and expectancy-disconfirmation theory form the theoretical foundation for two mixed-method studies. This research covers what professional sports organizations can do to help shorten the sales process. The study includes an industry analysis, literature review, and a mixed method survey of 212 people within the North American Sports Sponsorship Industry. Multiple studies have explored the different antecedents that affect turnover intentions. However, there has been little focus on the effects of training opportunities on turnover intentions. This study examines the impacts of training opportunity on job satisfaction and turnover intention among the generation X and generation Y cohorts in the United States. Considering how women's life experiences, especially from religious volunteer opportunities, can be reframed as training for broader leadership roles could help address this disparity. From the lens of conspicuous consumption, this research examines the interactive effect of brand logo size and political ideology on consumers’ intentions toward fashion products. Specifically, in a series of four studies, we address how consumer political ideology influences intentions toward items displaying smaller, inconspicuous logos versus larger, conspicuous logos for unfamiliar and familiar brands. We show that liberal consumers are more likely to prefer a large (rather than small) logo when a brand is unfamiliar. We suggest that liberals’ greater desire for product uniqueness elevates their risk propensity, which in turn increases preference for conspicuous consumption when familiarity with …

Although there is ample research on financial behavior, the inclusion of financial planners in the sample frames of such research is rare. This study used certified financial planners (CFPs) as the sole sample population to identify antecedents of optimal financial behavior and their relative importance. Data from a nationally representative sample of 167 CFPs indicated that (a) financial literacy lost relative importance as CFP tenure increased, (b) romantic partnership closely rivaled financial literacy in importance, (c) financial literacy was more weakly correlated with romantic partnership than with the other antecedents investigated, and (d) romantic partnership was universally accepted as a …

Prior literature established the link between a person aging out of a parent's insurance coverage at age nineteen and a significant decrease in insurance coverage of those nineteen-year-old young adults. This paper furthers this line of research by establishing a statically significant change in the payment burden of the various sources that comprise the total payment received by the medical care providers treating young adults who have aged out of their parent's insurance. Motivated by the increasing importance of data in recent business models, we examine whether data security is an important driver of mergers and acquisitions in the era of big data. To do this, we exploit the staggered adoption of laws that require mandatory disclosure of data breaches across U.S. states. Our empirical strategy exploits two sources of variations: (a) changes in the intensity of M&As in a state before and after the adoption of data breach laws, and (b) differences between industries operating with varying degrees of cyber risks. Today, Japan’s auto industry is renowned for its dominance of foreign markets. Japanese cars are cheap and fuel-efficient, undercutting larger, more expensive automobiles from Europe and America. Scholarship on recent Japanese industrial development tends to prioritize a ‘developmental state’ and robust industrial policy in shielding Japanese manufacturers from trade liberalization. This paper will argue that, while the industrial policy steered by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) played a significant role in advancing the interests of the Japanese auto industry, it was ultimately the unique trust-based keiretsu conglomerate structure that gave Japanese auto producers a comparative advantage vis-à-vis …

Applied Statistical Models For Evaluating Firm Operating Performance And Investment Returns, Christopher Chen

This paper investigates the extent to which CEO, industry, firm, year, corporate parent, and business segment effects contribute to variation in the performance of public US companies classified by NAICS industry codes between 2010-2018. Applying several statistical models, the paper finds that 32.9% of segment profit variation is associated with business segment effects with negligible year effects (0.11%), similar to the findings of prior literature. This analysis also finds that corporate parent membership plays a larger role and industry and CEO effects play a smaller role in profit variation than previously suggested. The global financial crisis of 2007–2009 caused major economic disturbances in the oil market. In this paper, we consider five variables that describe the microeconomics of the supply of and demand for oil, and evaluate their importance before, during and after the global financial crisis. We consider five dissimilar regimes during the period of January 1986 to the end of 2020: two regimes prior to the global financial crisis, the regime during the crisis, and two regimes after the crisis. An important TM practice to improve retention of newcomers is the socialization process used to assimilate them. We conducted two studies; an exploratory qualitative study followed by a survey-based study. Our results indicate a substantial percentage of U.S. workers experience hazing as newcomers. Compared to newcomers who experience traditional onboarding, hazed workers report higher turnover intentions and strain and lower levels of engagement; important outcomes for firms seeking to reduce the costs and disruptions of early-tenure turnover. Leaders of SMEs may heed the call to provide a welcome mat rather than a gauntlet for new employees to run.

This paper looks at psychological contracts in small and medium-sized enterprises, an underrepresented topic in the psychological contract literature. Adopting a multi-perspective approach, we explore what employers and young professionals expect regarding their employment obligations. The results of a qualitative research design and interviews conducted in four European countries reveal the importance of competence and performance-enhancing behaviours on one side and support for performance and development, good working conditions, autonomy, flexibility, work–life balance, and relationships on the other. The significance and imprint of SMEs as dominant employers is not proportionally reflected in people management scholarship. In an effort to map out the prospects for greater understanding, this paper critically evaluates the prevailing understanding in HRM. First, a case is made for definitional clarity to avoid aggregate interpretations of SMEs and ill-defined applications of HRM. It well known that palatability and nutritional quality of foods and/or diets are viewed as being in tension with one another. While there exist multiple measures of healthiness, there are no such measures for tastiness. This gap limits the degree to which researchers can investigate this tension and its implications for dietary behavior and hence public health and nutrition policy. The scope of future work concerning the dietary behavior of Americans would expand greatly if researchers better understood consumers’ willingness to eat certain foods, which matters as much as recommending those foods for them to eat in the first place. …

Databases containing macro-level data are an underutilized methodological tool for expanding theory in micro research (i.e., individual and team) to the macro (i.e., organizational and higher) level of analysis. We describe how macro archival databases support different theoretical approaches for upwardly expanding micro research and summarize unanswered research questions across micro domains requiring upward expansion. This project aims to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected people's food shopping tendencies, specifically focusing on the use of online grocers. It uses data collected by a team of researchers led out of Portland State University. This data consists of roughly 8000 surveys distributed starting in September of 2020. The survey asks respondents to discuss their demographics, household resources, and shopping tendencies.
