News Shocks And Business Cycle In Emerging Markets, Jakkraphan Kangwanvibul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study examines news shocks in theoretical real-business-cycle model in the aspect of emerging-market economy. Many features in emerging-market business cycles, such as consumption volatility that exceeds income volatility, sudden stop pattern in capital flows and strongly countercyclical current account to income, distinguish itself from a developed small opened economy, and in this study, it also differentiates itself from previous works in the literature by studying in the aspect of business cycles in emerging markets. The study uses simulation method, developing on real-business-cycle theory to generate artificial business cycle moments and impulse response function. For the result, it considers news …
The Use And Analysis Of Accounting And Non-Accounting Information In Equity-Based Crowdfunding, Aranya Narklor
The Use And Analysis Of Accounting And Non-Accounting Information In Equity-Based Crowdfunding, Aranya Narklor
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Equity-based crowdfunding (ECF) is a new funding source for Thai startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). However, there has been only one ECF fundraising success story in Thailand during the past three years. A mixed-method research approach is employed to investigate the use of accounting and non-accounting information in the Thai ECF setting. The findings show that the most important information is the business model. The majority of participants focus on estimated revenue & cost and estimated cash flow. They pay a great deal of attention to non-accounting information, which is product/service characteristics and market potential. These results can …
Market Liquidity And Mutual Fund Performance During Financial Crisis, Matina O-Warinrat
Market Liquidity And Mutual Fund Performance During Financial Crisis, Matina O-Warinrat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Market illiquidity influences mutual fund performance differently between crisis and non-crisis period. A significant drop in market liquidity makes investors panic leading to the early and large redemption. Fund managers have to liquidate the portfolio putting pressure on the asset prices, so the underperformance of mutual fund is recognized in non-crisis period. However, the result of illiquidity is different during crisis. The total effect of market illiquidity is positively related to all fund classes. This could then be interpreted as the evidence of management skills, market-timing and volatility-timing skills in fund managers to provide superior fund performance. Moreover, the further …
A Real Estate Valuation Model Using Boosted Feature Selection, Kankawee Chanasit
A Real Estate Valuation Model Using Boosted Feature Selection, Kankawee Chanasit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
To estimate real estate values, a complex valuation model based on artificial neural network (ANN) has been established as a successful means in modern machine learning research, specifically when high-dimensional data are available. Unfortunately, the real estate data in many locations, such as Thailand, are quite limited in terms of features. Hence, it becomes mandatory to reduce the complexity using feature selection techniques. These techniques aim to improve performance by identifying significant factors and help decrease the computational overload and model construction. However, due to the lack of explicability and interpretability in ANNs, the analysis of input factors cannot be …
The Relevance Of Non-Financial Key Performance Indicators, Bingxu Fang, Partha Mohanram, Dushyant Vyas
The Relevance Of Non-Financial Key Performance Indicators, Bingxu Fang, Partha Mohanram, Dushyant Vyas
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
The limitations of financials statements in assessing firm performance have long been known to the academic and practitioner accounting communities. Recent years have witnessed a sharp increase in the frequency and scope of non-financial Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) disclosed by companies and used by market participants. In this study, we investigate the relevance of various voluntarily reported non-financial KPIs. We find that KPIs are positively associated with future profitability, sales growth, and current stock returns; however, the stock market underreacts to the information embedded in KPIs for firms operating in opaque information environments.
Financial Vulnerability And The Reproduction Of Disadvantage In Economic Exchanges, Tianyu He, Rellie Derfler-Rozin, Marko Pitesa
Financial Vulnerability And The Reproduction Of Disadvantage In Economic Exchanges, Tianyu He, Rellie Derfler-Rozin, Marko Pitesa
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Integrative value generation through negotiated business deals is a fundamental way in which organizations and economic systems attain economic benefits. It is also an important way in which individuals can improve their financial situation. We propose that individuals most in need of improving their financial standing, those in a financially vulnerable situation, are least likely to reap the benefits of integrative value generation. We theorize that financial vulnerability induces a more zero-sum construal of success, or a view that success for one person must come at another person’s success. A more zero-sum construal of success, in turn, hampers negotiators’ ability …
Managing Clinic Variability With Same-Day Scheduling, Intervention For No-Shows, And Seasonal Capacity Adjustments, Kum Khiong Yang, Tugba Cayirli
Managing Clinic Variability With Same-Day Scheduling, Intervention For No-Shows, And Seasonal Capacity Adjustments, Kum Khiong Yang, Tugba Cayirli
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigates demand and capacity strategiesfor managing clinic variability. These include (i) same-day scheduling tocontrol random walk-ins, (ii) no-show intervention, where the clinic callsadvance-booked patients a day before to identify and release canceled slots tosame-day patients, and (iii) adjustments to daily number of appointments foradvance-booked patients to match seasonal variations in same-day demand. Thesestrategies are tested over the individual-block/fixed-interval (IBFI) and theDome appointment rules. The resulting appointment systems are tested underscenarios with different levels of same-day demand, demand seasonality,no-shows and cost ratios. The goal is to minimize the weighted sum of patients’wait time and physician’s idle-time and overtime. Our …
Sell-Side Analysts' Benchmarks, Ohad Kadan, Leonardo Madureira, Rong Wang, Tzachi Zach
Sell-Side Analysts' Benchmarks, Ohad Kadan, Leonardo Madureira, Rong Wang, Tzachi Zach
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Sell-side analysts employ different benchmarks when defining their recommendations. A buy for some brokers means the stock is expected to outperform its industry, while for other brokers it means the stock is expected to outperform the market, or some return threshold. We show that these stated benchmarks have implications for the distribution of recommendations, price reactions to recommendations, and the investment value of recommendations. We conclude that, depending on the question, academics may need to account for the benchmarks when studying analysts’ outputs, and investors may find the benchmarks beneficial in interpreting analysts’ advice.

Performance Management: Quo Vadis?, Filip Lievens, Philipp Schapers, Christoph N. Herde
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Traditionally performance management has been described as a powerful tool in Human Resource Management (HRM) because it has potentially a wide array of application possibilities for various HR topics. However, the reality in practice is different. Various surveys reported that more than 90 percent of the performance management systems are unsuccessful. Further studies have shown that up to 75% of staff feel that their organization’s performance management system does not help them to improve their performance and is largely a waste of time (e.g., Capelli & Tavis, 2016; Pulakos, 2009). Economic analyses of the return on investment (as compared to …
Potential Pilot Problems: Treatment Spillovers In Financial Regulatory Experiments, Ekkehart Boehmer, Charles Jones, Xiaoyan Zhang
Potential Pilot Problems: Treatment Spillovers In Financial Regulatory Experiments, Ekkehart Boehmer, Charles Jones, Xiaoyan Zhang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In analyzing regulatory experiments, a fundamental assumption is that the control group is unaffected. However, in many settings, this assumption may not hold. Generally, the total effect of a regulatory change consists of direct and indirect effects, but the standard difference-in-difference approach measures only direct effects. We apply our methods to the 2007 repeal of the uptick rule by the SEC. The indirect effects are substantial, because unlike the 2005 partial repeal, total repeal enables aggressive portfolio shorting. In particular, we find that short sellers become much more aggressive across the board, and shorting activity increases, even in control stocks …

Privacy At Work: A Review And A Research Agenda For A Contested Terrain, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Laurel H. Teo, Reeshad S. Dalal
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Privacy in the workplace is a pivotal concern for employees and employers. Employees expect to be in control of the personal information and access they provide to the organization. Employers, however, expect extensive information regarding their employees as well as extensive access to employees’ presence. The chasm between these two often competing expectations has been magnified by regulatory and technological trends. We begin the review by integrating viewpoints from multiple disciplines to disentangle definitions of privacy and to delineate the privacy contexts of information privacy and work environment privacy. We then identify the key stakeholders of privacy in the workplace …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We begin by charting the evolution of the dominant perspective on job performance from one that viewed performance as static to one that viewed it as dynamic over long timeframes (e.g., months, years, decades) to one that views it as dynamic over not just long but also short timeframes (e.g., minutes, hours, days, weeks)—and that accordingly emphasizes the within-person level of analysis. The remainder of the article is devoted to the newer, short-timeframe research on within-person variability in job performance. We emphasize personality states and affective states as motivational antecedents. We provide accessible reviews of relevant theories and highlight the …

Political Ideology Of The Board And Ceo Dismissal Following Financial Misconduct, Uisung Park, Warren Boeker, David Gomulya
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Why do some boards refuse to take serious action against CEOs who have committed financial misconduct? Past work has directed attention to the antecedents of misconduct while largely overlooking this question. The relatively few studies to examine it have typically revolved around the capacity of boards to take action, or their relationships to their CEOs. This study instead examines how the beliefs and values held by board members can influence their actions following financial misconduct. Focusing on political ideology, we argue and find that politically conservative boards are more likely to respond by dismissing the CEO than are liberal boards. …

Optimization Of Non-Monetary Reward Provisions: Evidence From The Uk Banking Sector, Ese Okpebholo, Abdullah Zafar Sheikh
Business Review
This paper evaluates the current state of monetary and non-monetary rewards systems in place in the UK banking sector in an attempt to identify reasons for the preference of monetary rewards over non-monetary rewards. Data was collected from two banks, LLOYDS TSB and Royal Bank of Scotland. The selection of these two banks emanates from their recent bonus crises and the fact that they are both part nationalised, hence the need for a prudent reward system. Questionnaires were used to obtain data and the Evidence Based Reward Management (EBRM) methodology was used to highlight the effectiveness as well as the …

Fiscal Policy Transmission Mechanism In Pakistan: A General Equilibrium Analysis, Muhammad Raashid, Abdul Saboor, Shahzad Ahmad
Business Review
This paper explores the impact of fiscal spending on key macroeconomic indicators for Pakistan economy using an estimated open economy new Keynesian dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model. Results show that a positive shock to government consumption leads to fall in private consumption, private investment and exports owing to negative wealth effect, rise in interest rate and domestic currency appreciation, respectively. Imports and inflation also rise. Estimated values of present value fiscal multipliers are 0.54, 0.29 and 0.18 after 1 year, 5 years and 10 years, respectively. These results show that although positive in the short run, yet the magnitude …

General Emotional Labor Scale: Development And Establishing Psychometric Properties, Falak Zehra Mohsin, Nadia Ayub
Business Review
This study outlines the process followed in the development of the General Emotional Labor Scale-English (GELS-E). The scale construction process was divided into different phases. The first phase entailed the item generation and the second phase was the pilot study. Phase three and four dealt with developing the norms and establishing the psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of the final 30 items. It can be concluded that the GELS-E was developed as a measure that can be used by researchers to assess emotional labor in professionals. Such a measure of emotional labor can prove to be beneficial for researchers and …

Data was collected outside fast food restaurants across Karachi using systematic sampling. Every fourth person exiting the restaurant was approached to fill a questionnaire. The data was analyzed using structural equation modelling. The results suggest that both brand association and emotional confidence have a statistically significant influence on brand loyalty. The variance explained in brand loyalty was higher when emotional confidence was included in the model. …

How Can Higher Education Institutions Utilise Community Engagement To Support The Learning Of Enterprising Behaviour In Disadvantaged Communities?, Emma O'Brien
Doctoral
It is broadly agreed that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in economic and societal development. Supporting entrepreneurship has become a global phenomenon, and governments and policy makers have paid increasing attention to it. Yet, despite such policy developments, the OCED (2019) has identified that several communities (including women, youth, seniors, unemployed and immigrants) remain disadvantaged and under-represented in entrepreneurial activity. Inclusive entrepreneurship policies recognise the significant economic and social contribution these communities could make if greater encouragement and appropriate support was offered. This study investigates the supportive role that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can play in strengthening social inclusion through …

The Relationships Among External Environments, Organizational Structures, And Performance In Pursuit Of The Clinical And Academic Missions At Academic Health Centers, Eric J. Strucko
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical and academic missions place Academic Health Centers (AHCs) at the center of the American health care system, and the future viability of these institutions requires successful performance in competitive environments. AHCs are organizations involving hospitals, physician group practices, and medical schools, and treat patients with complex conditions, conduct bio-medical and health science research, and educate future physicians and health professionals. AHCs account for 20% or $540 billion of national health care expenditures, conduct over 80% of all heart, liver, and lung transplants, utilize over $27 billion in annual sponsored research funding, and graduate approximately 17,300 medical doctors annually. Why We Use A New Currency: The Role Of Trust And Control In Explaining The Perception And Usage Of Bitcoin, Joseph B. Walton
Theses and Dissertations
Social media, e-commerce, global peer-to-peer technologies, and the near ubiquity of computers and smartphones allow people to interact, trust, and exchange value across traditional socio-economic control boundaries and over significant distances. Since the creation in 2008 of a new cryptographic currency system called Bitcoin, a financial technology market sector of about 250 billion USD has rapidly emerged, raising questions about the nature of currency in society and whether new types of non-national money are warranted and viable. This debate has pitted heterodox economic interests against orthodox economic interests while it has rekindled interest in theories that view money as a …

Knowledge And Skill Predictors Of Voice Behavior: Voice As An Upward Influence, Zitong Sheng
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
In recent years, there has been a growing body of research focused on improving our understanding of employee voice behavior. Yet this literature focuses mainly on factors that influence employees’ decisions regarding whether to speak up (i.e., quantity of voice behavior), rather than factors that influence whether voice behavior turns out to be effective. As a result, job attitudes and personality characteristics have been identified as the major personal factors predicting voice behavior. The current study contributes to the voice literature by viewing voice from an upward influence angle, examining the influences of the quality of content and …
