Backpacker identity has attracted growing attention in backpacker tourism research. However, there still lacks a valid scale to measure backpacker identity. Guided by Social Identity Theory (SIT), this study aims to develop and validate a scale to measure backpacker identity in the Chinese context. The study used two Chinese backpacker samples in two stages (Study 1, n=190; Study 2, n=323) to establish the psychometric properties of a backpacker identity scale (BIS). Strategy, structure and rivalry across an industry has an impact upon innovation outcomes at the industry level. However, when patterns of rivalry are altered through the presence of strategic networks (sets of firms that cooperate closely on the basis of their web of strategic alliances) it is not clear what impact this has upon product market (price) competition and in factor markets (patents). Using data from the motor vehicle industry, we find only limited support for the notion that competitive responses vary with changes in network-level rivalry most likely due to co-opetition and a lack of stability across the networks. …

Real Effects Of Search Frictions In Consumer Credit Markets, Bronson Argyle, Taylor Nadauld, Christopher Palmer

We establish two underappreciated facts about costly search. First, unless demand is perfectly inelastic, search frictions can result in significant deadweight loss by decreasing consumption. Second, whenever cross-price elasticities are non-zero, costly search in one market also affects quantities in other markets. As predicted by our model of search for credit under elastic demand, we show that search frictions in credit markets contribute to price dispersion, affect loan sizes, and decrease final-goods consumption. Using microdata from millions of auto-loan applications and originations not intermediated by car dealers, we isolate plausibly exogenous variation in interest rates due to institution-specific pricing rules …

An observational study examined the efficacy of using accelerometer and gyroscope (i.e., orientation) data from standard mobile devices to assess response credibility. Study participants played twenty rounds of a card game where they self-reported whether they won or lost each round. Participants received a base payment but could gain increased “bonus” payments by cheating. After the card game, participants were asked a “Yes-No” question whether they cheated while their orientation data was captured. We predicted that people concealing information about an adverse behavior (i.e., cheating), would result in differences in both absolute magnitude changes in acceleration and in rotation, as …

The Impact Of The Introduction Of Fx Futures On The Volatility Of The Underlying Asian Emerging Market Currencies, Teresa Starzecki

This paper examines the impact of the introduction of currency futures on the volatility of four Asian emerging market currencies: Chinese yuan, Indian rupee, South Korean won, and Thai baht. A GARCH(1,1) model is implemented to measure volatility in pre- and post- futures introduction periods along with an MCMC procedure to estimate the model and test the significance in changes in volatility between the periods. We find that for three of the four currencies, the persistence and long-run mean of volatility significantly decrease after futures were introduced, while the variance of variance decreases for all four currencies. The findings, from personal interviews using the Repertory Test and laddering analysis, present destination marketers with potential brand positioning themes based on personal values. Do Structural Breaks In Volatility Cause Spurious Volatility Transmission?, Massimiliano Caporin, Farooq Malik

We show through extensive Monte Carlo simulations that structural breaks in volatility (volatility shifts) across two independently generated return series cause spurious volatility transmission when estimated with popular bivariate GARCH models. However, using a dummy variable for the induced volatility shift virtually eliminates this bias. We also show that structural breaks in volatility have a substantial impact on the estimated hedge ratios. We confirm our simulation findings using the US stock market data.

To optimize the U.S. airports’ operational performance, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides various metric values (i.e., average gate arrival delays, the average number of daily aircraft operations, effective gate-to-gate times, and taxi-in and taxi-out times) attributed to NextGen programs. The U.S. airports are now expected of designing more efficient arrival and departure procedures as part of their NextGen capabilities. Forecasts predict we will need 790,000 pilots by 2037. This prediction means airlines will need to increase pilot levels by 267%. Finding a solution to this pilot shortage requires the aviation community to address limiting regulatory and other core factors. Many have claimed that 1,500-hour rule and mandatory retirements are critical issues contributing to the pilot shortage. However, the data does not support these claims. Each entry in this new edition has been updated or reviewed to provide the most current information available. Most of the data was drawn from IRS 990-PF tax returns filed by the foundations. The U.K. has proposed a new standalone restructuring mechanism that incorporates many attributes of Chapter 11, including a cross-class cram down and the absolute priority rule. This study identifies and examines the framing patterns in the U.S. right-wing media coverage of the President Donald Trump administration’s ban on immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries. The study is directed by one research question: How did the right-wing media frame the ban on Muslim immigrants? A total of 53 articles (news stories, features, and opinion pieces) from two right-wing U.S. media outlets, Daily Caller and Breitbart News, were identified and included in the analysis. Research has shown that supplier quality can lead to brand quality failures. However, what is not clear is whether a supplier’s country of origin (COO) plays a role in the evaluations of manufacturer brands after a recall is initiated. In this paper, through the lens of resource advantage (R-A) theory, we empirically examine whether a supplier’s COO hurts or helps the vehicle brand when a supplier is blamed during a vehicle recall event. This study examines the link between proactive personality and creative behavior by focusing on employee thriving at work as a mediator. Data from 438 employees and their supervisors were collected and examined by conducting structural equation modeling. This analysis revealed that employee thriving at work fully mediates the relationship between proactive personality and creative behavior. Additionally, the results showed that the perceived presence of high-involvement human resources (HR) practices in the organization enhances the tendency of proactive individuals to thrive at work. Research in accounting education has evolved to include, among other areas, research relevance, faculty research productivity, and the use of journal lists. These topics offer new areas for research including investigating the benefits and risks of relevant/irrelevant research, how effectively faculty research is evaluated, the potential consequences of using journal lists, and much more. Although these areas have significant and wide‐ranging effects on faculty, much more empirical data is needed to inform decision making. This paper highlights these issues and makes suggestions for additional research to help the academy make better decisions by using data‐driven research findings.

My experience of working with boards of independent schools has led me to conclude that boards often struggle to know how they might make their governance more effective. Very little has been written and few empirical studies have investigated governance of independent school boards in Australia, despite the considerable responsibility and power entrusted to them. This study asks how well such boards are governing and what they could do to engender fully effective governance.

The availability of quality pharmaceutical products impacts the lives of the global population on a daily basis. The importance of product availability and quality within pharmaceutical manufacturing requires that quality systems put into place are capable of accurately and robustly capturing the quality compliance, or lack thereof, of the various stages of production. This review intends to analyze current expert-recommended best practices within key elements of a pharmaceutical manufacturing quality control system and provide recommendations throughout. The quality elements discussed include Quality by Design method validation, necessary equipment determination, and equipment qualification, followed by documentation control and data flow.
