JOHNSON CITY (March 3, 2020)  Three students at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy have been accepted into the prestigious Paul Ambrose Scholars Program, which prepares public health and clinical health professions students to promote change and be leaders in addressing population health challenges at the national and community level. 

The students include third years Rebecca Maloney, Dowelltown; Chandler Parris, Canton, North Carolina; and Nicholas Shields, Granite Falls, North Carolina. They were selected out of 40 students from health profession schools across the United States and will travel to San Antonio, Texas, in March for the programs …

JOHNSON CITY (March 3, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing was listed 10^th among the most affordable online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs in the country, according to a new ranking by BestHealthDegrees.com.

ETSU’s DNP program is a doctoral degree focused on rural clinical practice in primary care settings. The program prepares advanced practice nurses and executive nurse leaders to assess and evaluate evidence from research and translate or use the findings to affect practice change and enhance and promote quality of care.

Following nearly two years of major renovations, the “living room” of campus has gained square footage, amenities, food options, meeting and lounge space, and a more modern look.

The parallel media related to sports, gaming and gambling are expanding, exemplified by the emergence of esports and game-related gambling (e.g. loot boxes, esports betting). The increasing convergence of these phenomena means it is essential to understand how they interact. Given the expanding consumer base of esports, it is important to know how individuals’ backgrounds and consumption of game media may lead to esports betting. This study employs survey data (N = 1368) to investigate how demographics, alongside consumption of video games, esports and gambling can predict esports betting activity. Women are one of the solutions to alleviating the pending pilot shortage. Becoming a pilot needs to appeal to women. Resilience plays an important role in determining whether women in male-dominated career fields will pursue or abandon their careers. The pilot profession is dominated by masculine beliefs, values and perceptions creating an organizational culture adverse and challenging to women.

The study objective was to explore the influence of adversity on female pilots and its effect on resiliency. In our sample of 1,499 female pilots, we found lower resiliency levels as compared to a general U.S. sample. Additionally, statistically significant differences …

Flight training organizations in North America are experiencing strong student interest in flight training and a career as a professional pilot. In addition, airlines have introduced successful recruitment and retention programs. Experience has shown that most staffing challenges are successfully resolved by improving the work/life balance, pay, and career-progression offerings.

JOHNSON CITY (March 2, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Alok Agrawal received an award for a new R01 grant proposal from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health to further develop his research on a protein that could be used to develop a treatment for pneumococcal infection.

The project, “Complement-mediated anti-pneumococcal functions of C-reactive protein,” is funded until January 31, 2025, at $370,000 per year, with the total funding amounting to $1,850,000.
