JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 8, 2020) – Dr. Kate Beatty and Michael Meit, faculty in the East Tennessee State University College of Public Health’s Center for Rural Health Research, have co-authored an article in the Journal of Appalachian Health.  

The article, “Rural Appalachia Battling the Intersection of Two Crises: COVID-19 and Substance Use Disorders,” discusses rural Appalachia’s great risk of unforeseen side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased mortality from substance use disorders.

The goal of this thesis project is to discover how the effects of global emergencies such as Covid-19 affect graduating supply chain management students. Global emergencies cause issues and can completely disrupt supply chains. Therefore, it is hypothesized that since supply chain students may be of help in aiding these supply chains that they may currently or eventually be of higher need and value. Global disasters are full of uncertainties and it is unknown how an event on the scale of Covid-19 will influence employment decisions made by supply chain employers. JOHNSON CITY – (Dec. 8, 2020) Following a national search, Dr. Janna Scarborough has been named dean of the Clemmer College at East Tennessee State University.

Scarborough joined the ETSU faculty in 2006 and has served as interim dean for the past 20 months.  For six years, she served as chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services and also held an associate dean appointment in the Clemmer College before assuming the interim deanship in March 2019.

The Revolution in Military Logistics has impacted military logistics business processes. It requires logisticians to adapt to changes and perform their tasks. However, it also resulted in inconsistent performance of employees. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between individual and situational factors and individual work performance of logisticians at the Royal Service Corps of the Malaysian Army. Individual factors (i.e. openness to experience and social intelligence) and a situational factor (i.e. workplace relationship) are the independent variables. The company was recently approved, in Germany, for their new drug Zynteglo for the treatment of betta thalassemia. Tobacco use remains a global problem, and as a demographic group, adolescents are at a high risk of its adverse effects. In addition, disparities exist in strategies to address tobacco control, particularly among youth from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. The health risks associated with tobacco use provide a compelling reason for all nations to prioritize addressing and regulating its use and providing sustainable funding sources for training healthcare professionals and others under Article 14 of the World Health Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Could Deglobalization Kill Transnational Cooperation? A Brief Historical Lesson, Virág Rab

The study examines a historical period referred to in the literature as deglobalization. After the First World War, economic nationalism gained ground in some countries, mainly for political reasons, characterized by protectionist economic policies and the pursuit of autarchy/self-sufficiency. There were no international regulations or well-functioning international institutions that would have facilitated economic cooperation. How did those who worked hard to reconstruct the European economy react to this situation? This study presents this through the process of developing an informal network of bankers, and it indirectly highlights some important links between informal networks, globalization, and deglobalization.

Many employees working in social services are exposed to workplace violence (described in Andersen, et al., 2018) and bullying (discussed in Whitaker, 2012). The workplace violence paper showed not only that up to three-fourths of social workers are exposed to violence at work, but that organizational structures and dynamics set the stage for violence to occur. Settings where staff lacked role clarity and predictability, and where emotional demands, role conflict, and work family conflict were high, also were associated with more threats and violence among employees and by clients.
