JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 25, 2020) – Cory Whitfield, a graduate student in East Tennessee State University’s Master of Social Work Program, was recently elected to serve as the student representative on the National Association of Social Workers, Tennessee Chapter’s (NASW-TN) Board of Directors.

As student representative, Whitfield will assist chapter office members in promoting racial and social justice and strengthening and promoting the social work profession in Tennessee. He will work alongside 17 other social workers from across the state who serve on the board.

Product Market Competition, Stock Price Informativeness, And Ifrs Adoption: Evidence From Europe, Jing Wang, Wei Li, Arno Forst

This study examines whether and how policy changes that aim to improve market efficiency, specifically the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), influence the relation between product market competition and stock price informativeness. Using a sample of European firms, we find a negative association between product market competition and stock price informativeness as evidenced by larger (smaller) stock price changes surrounding earnings announcements for firms facing more (less) product market competition. These findings are consistent with prior studies examining the U.S. capital market. We further find that IFRS adoption alleviates the negative association. This positive effect is more …

JOHNSON CITY – (Sept. 24, 2020) Five East Tennessee State University faculty members have been selected to participate in the inaugural Faculty Research Cohort.

Launched this fall, the cohort was established to provide opportunities for professional growth in scholarship and research skills.  “One of our goals in creating this program was to help tenure-track faculty who are just getting started define their research agenda and acquire the resources they need,” said ETSU faculty member Dr. Trena Paulus.

Each member of the cohort received a grant and will spend the next year working on a research project.

This paper discusses Beyonce’s Lemonade, a visual album released in 2016, and Ntzake Shange’s famous choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf. The paper will seek to put in conversation the two works and analyze their commentary on redefining the traditional narrative while also working to understand Black Womanhood and the pain, trauma, reconciliation, and healing that comes with it. My Canterbury project will look at the ways in which Shange’s For Colored Girls and Beyonce’s visual text Lemonade merge arts and literature to create a space of healing and renewal for Black women today.

e LEI-N rose by 0.85% during August 2020. August marked the fourth consecutive increase in the leading indicator after sharp declines in March and April. The August result indicates that the Nebraska economy will grow over the next 6 months, continuing a steady recovery from large economic losses in March and April. Five of the six components of the leading indicator improved during August. Airline passenger enplanements grew modestly after seasonal adjustment, and there was a modest increase in building permits for single-family homes. Building on the notion of “White fragility,” this study aims to explore how Whites react and cope with perceived discrimination at work. Specifically, the authors explore whether: (1) Whites react more negatively than minorities when they perceive discrimination at work and (2) Whites are more likely than minorities to restore the status quo by leaving the situation when they perceive discrimination at work. Data for this study were obtained from the Professional Worker Career Experience Survey. The center is a multicultural facility focused on arts, education and community leadership.  The scholarship is named in memory of Michael Young, a member of the Langston High School Class of 1965 who was the last student to graduate from the school.  From 1893-1965, Langston was Johnson City’s school for African American students.  Young passed away April 4, 2020.

This study examined perceived brand attractiveness of and identification with fashion luxury brands given different levels of sexuality in advertisements. Sex in advertisements has become increasingly more common to generate attention and interest in fashion luxury products with limited research on its influence on the consumer. A sample of 1266 males and females completed a survey on brand attractiveness and identification after examining an advertisement of a luxury fashion product. Participants were assigned an advertisement that featured a same-gendered model at one of four levels of sexuality (fully clothed to nude). Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox Christians have emerged as an overlooked sector showing unexpected growth among same-day religious tourists to the Holy Land. How do they come to total over 200,000 unique guests and make up 91.5% of all single-day visitors to Israel when they come from so far away? Researchers need to rethink first what constitutes same-day religious tourism. Marketing mechanisms attract Russians and Ukrainians to Cyprus, and then facilitate opportunities to sample religious heritage sites in nearby Israel.
