2020 Celebration Of Scholarship, Creativity, And Engagement, Todd Bruns, Beth Heldebrandt

Programs

The 2020-2021 academic year is truly extraordinary and higher education’s new, hopefully temporary, normal began on rather short notice in Spring 2020. While our environment has changed, we, as a shared community, are pleased that the important work of faculty continues and evolves as faculty broaden and redefine the boundaries of scholarship, creativity, and innovation in accelerating hybrid and remote environments. And, as new forms and strategies for scholarship and creativity emerge, the core principles of faculty life and student learning remain central to the mission of Eastern Illinois University.

For that reason, our faculty, department chairs, college deans, the …

State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy in San Diego

The year 2020 has become one of reckoning – as a time for reflection and hindsight about how we got to this point of crisis, as well as one for envisioning a new path forward. As the pandemic shows no sign of abating, the disruption wrought by COVID-19 is broad and deep for nonprofits, their leaders, and constituents.

The 2020 State of Nonprofit and Philanthropy Report synthesizes findings from three nonprofit leader surveys (including COVID-19 impacts surveys), public opinion polling, and other sources of nonprofit data to provide the most up to date and holistic picture of this essential sector. …

2020 Culture Shift: Measuring Covid-19 Impact On San Diego Arts And Culture Nonprofits, Thomas Abruzzo, Laura Deitrick, Christine Jones, Jonathan Glus

Arts and Culture

To better understand the impacts of the pandemic on City-funded arts and culture nonprofits and their workforce, The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego – on behalf of the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture – conducted a survey of arts and culture organizations funded by the City in fiscal year 2020. In that year, the City invested $11.4 million in arts and culture organizations. In fiscal year 2021, the City was forced to reduced annual funding to approximately $5.7 million due to drastically reduced tax revenues. Eight months into the pandemic, many City-funded arts …

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is one of the most important food assistance programs in the United States, serving 6.4 million low-income, eligible women, infants, and children under 5 years of age in 2019. In the program, participants are prescribed a list of food benefits, which can be redeemed in WIC-authorized stores. However, there are multiple behavioral barriers in the program and the stores that prevent participants from redeeming the benefits fully. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between the use of a widely used mobile phone app, WICShopper, and the …

Discovering The Link Between Investor Attention And Trade Volume In The Philippine Stock Exchange, Patrick Allan G. Morando, Isabel Louise D. Banico, Martin Stevens C. Ng, Riggs Mattieu M. Villardo Oct 2020

Discovering The Link Between Investor Attention And Trade Volume In The Philippine Stock Exchange, Patrick Allan G. Morando, Isabel Louise D. Banico, Martin Stevens C. Ng, Riggs Mattieu M. Villardo

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Investors regard trade volume as a crucial technical indicator that can confirm trends, predict trend reversals, and determine liquidity (Westerhoff, 2006; Mahender et al., 2014). Trade volume is reported throughout the current trading day as often as once an hour; however, the reported hourly and end-of-the-day trade volumes are merely estimates. Actual and final trade volumes are reported the following day. Given the relative inconsistency of reported trade volumes and uncertainty of future trade volumes, investors miss the opportunity to reinforce their trading decisions through the trade volume indicator.

Situational And Personal Factors Influencing Hospitality Employee Engagement In Value Co-Creation, Prakash K. Chathoth, Robert J. Harrington, Eric S. W. Chan, Fevzi Okumus, Zibin Song

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study explores the situational and personal factors affecting hospitality employees' engagement in the co-creation of value. The concept of value co-creation emerged from the general co-creation literature, and little research has assessed how situational and personal factors enhance our understanding of value creation. To explore these underlying factors, a qualitative study involving in-depth and focus group interviews was conducted at three luxury hotels in Hong Kong and Macao. The research findings indicate five situational factors and five personal factors impact cocreated value for hotel guests in the luxury sector. Insights are provided into the potential use of these factors …

A Predictive Analytics Approach To Building A Decision Support System For Improving Graduation Rates At A Four-Year College, Xuan Wang, Helmut Schneider, Kenneth R. Walsh

Faculty Publications

Although graduation rates have interested stakeholders, educational researchers, and policymakers for some time, little progress has been made on the overall graduation rate at four-year state colleges. Even though selective admission based on academic indicators such as high school GPA and ACT/ SAT have widely been used in the USA for years, and recent statistics show that less than 40% of students graduate from four-year state colleges in four years in the US. The authors propose using an ensemble of analytic models that considers cost as a better form of analysis that can be used as input to decision support …

A large amount of literature has suggested that different minority backgrounds have an effect on depression rates. Previous research shows that people who come from minority backgrounds show higher amounts of depression compared to people who are not from minority backgrounds. Research also suggests that people who come from lower socioeconomic status display higher levels of depression compared to people who are a part of a higher socioeconomic status. Since March of 2020, Coronavirus has made a huge impact globally. Research has been done surrounding the pandemic and the effects it has had on people’s lives. This research has shown …

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study explores the two-stage multiproduct economic manufacturing quantity (EMQ)based system with delayed product differentiation and overtime option for fabrication of common parts. The classic EMQ model determines optimal lot size under assumptions of steady production rate; however, managers of present-day’s manufacturing firms, operating in a highly competitive global business environment, must constantly seeks ways to strengthen their competitive forces, such strategies include: (i) to increase machine utilization through planning multiproduct fabrication; (ii) to evaluate different production schemes to reduce cost, e.g., a delayed differentiation strategy, when a common intermediate product exists in a multiproduct system, wherein all required common …

Hedging Season: The Effect Of Hedging Using Financial Derivatives On Firm Value Of Publicly-Listed Non-Financial Firms In The Philippines, Julio Alfonso D. Arrastia, Christina Angela N. Balagot, Joseph Anthony C. Go, Dominique Ann Philomena V. Lacuna

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Firms use financial derivatives as a way to hedge risky transactions to avoid financial risks. Studies have focused on firms’ use of financial derivatives in developed countries. However, there is limited research done on emerging markets like the Philippines because these economies have only recently adapted advanced reporting standards that obligate the disclosure of the nature and extent of risks resulting from the use of financial instruments. We used Tobin’s Q ratio to proxy for firm value and to determine the presence of a hedging premium. Because derivatives are used by firms to hedge against currency risks, interest rate risks, …
