Midwestern Artists' Responses To The Demands Of Entrepreneurial Management, Carolyn Melissa Nelson-Kavajecz

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Artists have the potential to achieve higher levels of success in business management, leadership roles, and entrepreneurial endeavors if equipped with the proper knowledge. Although artists may have a creative perspective and could possess many of the attributes sought after by organizations and communities in need of innovative leaders, their approaches to entrepreneurial management differ from traditional business managers or community leaders. The problem was poor understanding of how artists in Midwestern regions of the United States respond to the demands of entrepreneurial management. The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to understand how 20 individuals who self-identified as …

A Holistic View Of Identity Theft Tax Refund Fraud, Andrew J. Hultgren Jan 2019

A Holistic View Of Identity Theft Tax Refund Fraud, Andrew J. Hultgren

Honors Theses and Capstones

This thesis attempts to explain what identity theft tax refund fraud is and how the issue has developed over the years. It presents a holistic, historic view of the problem as well as how it has been addressed. It primarily relies on reports from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), Government Accountability Office (GAO) and National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) in its assessment. It does not examine foreign tax administrations’ methods of dealing with identity theft refund fraud or the extent of the issue in other principalities, and therefore this is an area in need …

The Real-Time Revolution: Transforming Your Organization To Value Customer Time, Jerry Power, Thomas W. Ferratt

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

Publisher's description: Business survival requires valuing what customers value—and in our overworked and distraction-rich era, customers value their time above all else. Real-time companies beat their rivals by being faster and more responsive in meeting customer needs.

To become a real-time company, as top scholars Jerry Power and Tom Ferratt explain, you need a real-time monitoring and response system. They offer detailed advice on how to put procedures in place that will collect data on how well products or services are saving customer time; identify strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities; and specify innovations needed to save even more customer time. …

Something Of Value: A Value Proposition Exercise For The Marketing Classroom, Rebecca Dingus, Alexander Milovic Jan 2019

Something Of Value: A Value Proposition Exercise For The Marketing Classroom, Rebecca Dingus, Alexander Milovic

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Gone are the days of transactional marketing, and here to stay are increased expectations for marketers to act as trusted advisors while providing value customized specifically to each customer. Accordingly, marketers must clearly identify the competitive advantage of their products or services, and they need to be sure this competitive advantage is valuable in the eyes of the customer. This paper focuses on teaching students to adopt such a perspective when developing customer-focused solutions, as well as to train them on creating an actual value proposition. An exercise is presented, with data demonstrating its effectiveness for teaching value propositions.

The ubiquitous nature of mobile internet devices (i.e., smartphones and tablet computers) has led to an increase of their use within the retail environment as a shopping assistive technology. Consumers use them for a variety of shopping-related tasks, the most significant of which is researching product information. The use of these devices has clearly impacted how consumers shop, but what is not clear is how these devices affect shopper satisfaction, trust in the retailer and subsequent shopper intentions. The purpose of this paper is to better understand these relationships and extend existing research on the use of mobile internet devices …

What Supports Are Needed To Encourage And Assist Community Festivals And Events To Succeed And Grow? An Empirical Study., Helen Mcdwyer

Theses

Abstract: Communities are motivated to host festivals and events for a myriad of reasons. They generate important economic and social benefits for an area with increased visitor numbers, increased local spending and greater community cohesion. Festival and event tourism is an important segment of the overall tourism product in Ireland, particularly in an area such as Kerry where there is a heavy reliance on tourism. Many festivals and events in Kerry are organised by community and voluntary groups and yet these groups are increasingly pressurised to increase the professionality of their offering to compete for regional funding and sponsorship. Changes …

Does The Legal System Affect The Cost Of External Financing? Evidence From Ipo Underpricing Of Foreign Firms Listed In U.S. Stock Markets, Shaokang Wang, Jing Jiang Jan 2019

Does The Legal System Affect The Cost Of External Financing? Evidence From Ipo Underpricing Of Foreign Firms Listed In U.S. Stock Markets, Shaokang Wang, Jing Jiang

WCBT Faculty Publications

To study the effect of the legal system on the cost of external financing, we examine the degree of underpricing of the IPOs by foreign companies listed in U.S. We find that firms from highly corrupted countries have larger IPO underpricing. The quality of the home-country public law enforcement reduces the degree of IPO underpricing. In particular, the criminal sanction for violations of securities laws is the most significant factor in reducing underpricing. The evidence shows that even when a non-U.S. firm meets sophisticated U.S. regulations and goes public in a U.S. exchange, the degree of underpricing is still influenced …

An Empirical Examination Of Economic Determinants Of Financial Ceo Compensation: A Comparative Study On Pre And Post Financial Crisis Periods, Mahfuja Malik, Eunsup Daniel Shim

WCBT Faculty Publications

Inadequate risk monitoring and the executive incentive system of US financial institutions are considered to be significant factors in exacerbating the 2008 financial crisis, and regulators attempted to reform the executive compensation system in the post-crisis period. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of the economic determinants of the compensation for chief executive officers (CEOs) between the pre- and post-financial crisis periods, using data from US financial service institutions, since this is the sector that has been most affected by the financial crisis. We find that the mean values of total compensation and its incentive components, including cash …

Evaluating Kentucky State Pension Plans In The 2000s And Best Practices Moving Forward, Sarah Alegria Jan 2019

Evaluating Kentucky State Pension Plans In The 2000s And Best Practices Moving Forward, Sarah Alegria

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The Commonwealth of Kentucky sponsors three different pension retirement systems. This includes Kentucky Employee Retirement System, Teacher’s Retirement System, and Kentucky’s Judicial Form of Retirement System. Kentucky has one of the worst funded pension retirement plans and is currently facing shortfalls of about $43 billion (PEW, 2013). Between 1998-2008, Commonwealth of Kentucky’s legislators made many detrimental policy decisions that negatively affected its Pension Retirement System. The most impacting includes:

  • Enhancements of Benefits in the Nineties
  • Changing Final Compensation from the average of five-years to the average of three-years
  • Mandated Yearly Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA)
  • Not requiring the State to …

Virtual Proximity To Promote Expatriate Cultural Adjustment, Innovation, And The Reduction Of Stress Levels, Tom Coughlan, David J. Fogarty, Sara R. Fogarty

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Given the dramatic increase in the number of expatriates living and working abroad, there is a need to advance the research into how to make sure these employees achieve success on their assignments. Often, these expatriates assume managerial roles and are intended to be the gatekeepers of information. Typically, this information is necessary for the success of their colleagues, in both their home country and their host country. The expatriate’s role is to facilitate the integration of organizational knowledge from both their home and host countries, as well as key sources in their host country’s local environment. However, historically, there …

A Structural Equation Model Of Leader–Member Exchange, Employee–Supervisor Relationship, Performance Appraisal, And Career Development, William Joseph Henkel, Al C. Endres

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Some employees perceive that supervisors do not accurately reflect employees’ performance or effectively differentiate among employees’ performances during performance appraisals (PAs). Other employees believe the performance feedback they receive is not valuable for supporting their career development (CD). Leader–member exchange (LMX) and the distributive and interactional justice dimensions of organizational justice theories comprised the theoretical frameworks in this study for examining the significance of the relationships among LMX and employee–supervisor relationships (ESRs) and those relationships’ potential influence on employees’ CD through the PA process. Participants consisted of 44 defense contractor employees in the United States. Results from partial least squares …

A Qualitative Case Study Exploring Hand-Hygiene Standards In An Intensive Care Unit, Lyndon Augustine, Walter Mccollum, Richard Brown, Phoenix Mourning-Star

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infections that occur in patients during their time of care in a hospital. Considerable emphasis is currently placed on reducing HAIs through improving hand-hygiene (HH) compliance among healthcare professionals because HAIs are a critical challenge to public health in the United States. By focusing on meeting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention HH standards, the purpose of this qualitative research was to explore how noncompliance with these standards and lack of technology usage affect HAIs in the intensive care unit. Additionally, the goal of this research was to explore behavioral factors and best practices that influence …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of President Bill Clinton's First Term Presidential Rhetoric, Ireland Hill Jan 2019

A Rhetorical Analysis Of President Bill Clinton's First Term Presidential Rhetoric, Ireland Hill

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Bill Clinton was the United States of America’s (U.S.) 42nd President, and his rhetoric set the tone of U.S. political climate for years following his presidency. Due to the power that a president possesses, a president’s presence and statements are frequently analyzed. It is clear, however, that there is a lack of research completed on presidential rhetoric. Upon this realization, I reflected on my previous areas of research; one of those areas was the first term presidential rhetoric of Clinton. As a result, I decided that a rhetorical analysis of some of the major rhetoric that contributed to Clinton’s first …

University- Based Entrepreneurial Ecosystem And Entrepreneurial Intentions: Evidence From South India, Deepa Subhadrammal

Theses

This study seeks to understand the impact of University-Based Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (UBEE), particularly entrepreneurial support infrastructure within a university ecosystem on the entrepreneurial intentions of students in South India. A UBEE can directly affect the likelihood that students identify and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities, which, affects their entrepreneurial intentions. India is one of the top three countries globally in terms of the number of start-ups and is projected to host over 10,500 start-ups by 2020. However, there is a dearth of research investigating the impact of university entrepreneurial support initiatives on students’ entrepreneurial intentions and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. This is especially true …
