Feeling The Heat: Developing A Psychological Needs-Based Theory Of Performance Pressure At Work, Jacob Henry Smith May 2019

Feeling The Heat: Developing A Psychological Needs-Based Theory Of Performance Pressure At Work, Jacob Henry Smith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The concept of performance pressure has been prevalent in management research for decades. Ranging from the impact of time constraints on productivity to the influence of social evaluation on the performance of individuals and teams, pressure is a ubiquitous phenomenon that has generated significant interest in the social sciences. Despite its substantive footprint within management research, there is a lack of agreement among scholars regarding what performance pressure actually is (i.e., an internal or external phenomenon). Further, research on the subject has proliferated without a coherent theoretical understanding of why and how performance pressure arises as well as why and …

The Moderating Effect Of Media Naturalness On Motivating Language, James Cox May 2019

The Moderating Effect Of Media Naturalness On Motivating Language, James Cox

Theses and Dissertations

For decades, the research in communication in organizational behavior has focused on the reduction of uncertainty and consequently so has the research of leadership and computer mediated communication (CMC) (Salancik & Pfeffer, 1977; Sullivan, 1988). Because of this, many of the controversial issues and competing theories of CMC that have in good part centered around the topic of media choice in the context of task performance, which is a reflection of this narrow focus of CMC on uncertainty reduction. Therefore in order to study the more whole form of communication in motivation proposed by Sullivan (1988), a CMC theory is …

How I Organized A Music Festival At Cwu: Networking, Budgets, Artistry, Peregrine Spane

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Through setting up a music festival at Central Washington University I observed a need for independent music in Ellensburg, closer gender parity in regard to event line-ups, and how in-depth research in policy, budgets, networking, and inclusion would make this possible. In this presentation I will be describing my vision, explaining logistics, and reflecting on lessons learned and where to go in the future.

Essays In Applied Microeconomics, Chuan Chen May 2019

Essays In Applied Microeconomics, Chuan Chen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The first chapter of this dissertation quantifies to what extent business accelerators can reduce the venture market frictions for early-stage startups. With a novel non-transferable utility two-sided matching framework, this study shows that business accelerators can close the gaps due to entrepreneurs' gender and experience, but not so much for the differences due to locations. The second chapter studies the relative importance of screening compared to training in the total value creation by business accelerators from the perspectives of market participants. The estimates suggest that the value created by screening, which reflects through the improvement of financing in short-term after …

Firms’ Strategies For Technology And Platform-Based Markets, Tianxin Zou May 2019

Firms’ Strategies For Technology And Platform-Based Markets, Tianxin Zou

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I build game-theoretic frameworks to study how new Internet-enabled technologies can change the strategies of firms and online platforms. The first chapter studies how the integration of primary and resale concert ticket platforms can affect consumers and musicians. Consumers can buy concert tickets from primary platforms (e.g., Ticketmaster) or from resale platforms (e.g., StubHub) where tickets are resold by other consumers. Recently, Ticketmaster has also been developing its resale business and attempting to control the resale market by blocking consumers from reselling on competing resale platforms. Legislation in many states in the US requires consumers should be able …

Microfoundations Of Innovation In Organizations, Trey Cummings May 2019

Microfoundations Of Innovation In Organizations, Trey Cummings

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation weaves together three distinct chapters that are unified in their focus on the microfoundations of innovation in organizations. Chapter 1 utilizes a unique NASA employee data set to investigate the effect of promotion reward incentives on knowledge worker innovation. This study is the first to empirically show a positive relationship of promotion incentives with individual innovation outcomes in a field setting while also revealing a decrease in collaboration. This result exposes promotion structure as a potentially powerful tool for affecting innovation. Chapter 2 develops a unique measure of R&D structure and finds that the incentives created by long-term …

Reputational Considerations Within Prosocial Behavior, Rachel Gershon May 2019

Reputational Considerations Within Prosocial Behavior, Rachel Gershon

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Consumers and companies often consider the welfare of others when making decisions. Consumers might spend their money donating to meaningful causes or choose to purchase from socially responsible companies. Companies must also choose whether and how to prioritize behaving Prosocially or “giving back”. One reason that both companies and individuals behave prosocially is to be viewed positively by others, or in other words, to gain charitable credit. In my research, I explore this impression management motivation behind prosocial behavior. In Chapter one, I show that low-warmth actors are often assumed to lack communal (or other-oriented) intentions, even when acting generously. Low-warmth …

Blame And Credit In Organizations: Theory And Evidence Explaining The Responses Of Leaders After Failure And Success, Jasmine M. Huang May 2019

Blame And Credit In Organizations: Theory And Evidence Explaining The Responses Of Leaders After Failure And Success, Jasmine M. Huang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The blame and credit literature has operated largely on the assumption that actors want to reduce the blame assigned to them and increase assigned credit (Gioia & Sims, 1985; Greenwald, 1980; Shaver, 1985). As a result, much of the literature has focused on the shifting of blame away from the self and of credit towards the self (e.g., Crant & Bateman, 1993), rather than other behaviors that are less self-serving (e.g., blame-taking, Gunia, 2011). This dissertation explores a variety of blame and credit behaviors and explains why leaders may enact different types of blame and credit behaviors. In Chapter 2, …

Top Management Team Diversity, Equality, And Innovation: A Multilevel Investigation Of The Health Care Industry, A. Erin Bass May 2019

Top Management Team Diversity, Equality, And Innovation: A Multilevel Investigation Of The Health Care Industry, A. Erin Bass

Management Faculty Publications

The role of women on top management teams (TMTs) is an increasingly important topic for both academics and practitioners. Despite increased attention to gender diversity on TMTs, there remains limited understanding of how gender diversity influences important outcomes of the firm, such as innovation. To this end, I investigate the relationships between two dimensions of TMT diversity—TMT gender diversity and TMT compensation equality—and firm innovation, and consider how TMT size influences these relationships. Using a unique, multilevel, longitudinal sample of publicly traded firms in the U.S. health care industry, I find TMT size to be a key driver in the …

Heterogeneous Effects In The International Transmission Of The Us Monetary Policy: A Factor-Augmented Var Perspective, Anastasios Evgenidis, Dionisis Philippas, Costas Siriopoulos

All Works

© 2018, The Author(s). This paper analyses the international transmission of US monetary policy shocks. We use a time-varying, factor-augmented VAR framework to examine how and to what extent the propagation of US policy shocks affects the South East Asian (SEA) and European Union (EU) economies, through various transmission channels. We find that in the SEA economies, the income absorption effect is the most pronounced channel as indicated by the significant worsening of the trade balance of these countries, which provokes a reduction in their output. In addition, wealth effects and the balance sheet channel have an important contribution in …

Barriers Women Face At Work: A Cursory Review Of The Literature, Jessica Curran May 2019

Barriers Women Face At Work: A Cursory Review Of The Literature, Jessica Curran

Honors Program Theses and Projects

“Whether there are female leadership styles…is not really the right question. It is more important to ask why there has been so little attention paid to women leaders over the years as well as why the styles of leading more often exhibited by women are particularly useful at this critical moment in history” ~Charlotte Bunch

In the United States, women have been making steady gains in the workforce for more than 40 years (Ho, 2018).Despite this fact, women continue to face discrimination when it comes to leadership roles in the upper ranks of organizations (Ho, 2018). Noting these challenges, this …

The Opportunity Zones Program Provides High Returns On Investments, Kane Moran May 2019

The Opportunity Zones Program Provides High Returns On Investments, Kane Moran

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The Opportunity Zones Program is a new tax incentive established in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The program aims to direct investors towards low-income communities in the United States by providing more attractive investment prospects. The end goal of the program is to disrupt the unhealthy trend of geographic inequality caused by a disproportionate number of investments being funneled to a select few areas of the U.S. On a large scale, the benefits include a more balanced economy across the entire nation, while also providing tax benefits for investors, which can contribute to a higher return on …

These “superstar” athletes cause a buzz and can bring in more and more fans to spend money both inside and outside the arena. In this paper using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies we research NBA superstar LeBron James and his possible impact on the franchises he plays for in the cities he …

Understanding Ngos And Their Effectiveness Through A Comparative Study Of Their Role In Redd+, Jessica Russo May 2019

Understanding Ngos And Their Effectiveness Through A Comparative Study Of Their Role In Redd+, Jessica Russo

Political Science Student Scholarship

This thesis explores the following question: what roles do NGOs play and how effective may they be in efforts at global governance? Through a comparative case study analysis of NGOs advocating for Reducing Emissions for Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) and NGOs implementing REDD+ projects, specifically the Surui Forest Carbon Project located in the state of Rondônia, Brazil, I examine whether NGOs are more effective taking on the role as advocates or policy implementers. For this work, I will argue that independent of the multiplicity of roles that NGOs play, their effectiveness is a function of the level of their …

Exchange-Traded Funds: The Unknown Investment Opportunity, Thomas K. Leisher May 2019

Exchange-Traded Funds: The Unknown Investment Opportunity, Thomas K. Leisher

Undergraduate Economic Review

Actively managed mutual funds are some of the most invested in investment vehicles in the modern era. However, it is a great misunderstanding of their performance relative to their passively managed exchange-traded funds. Actively managed mutual funds fail to outperform their respective benchmarks due to a variety of reasons including market efficiency, timing, and tax consequences. These findings hold true in both the long-term and short-term for equities and fixed income funds. A self-conducted survey was also conducted in order to find the knowledge and opinions of college students on ETFs and mutual funds.

How To Help People Float, Andrea Andrews May 2019

How To Help People Float, Andrea Andrews

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This manuscript examines how to help more people learn to float because this skill is taking a much more central role in the latest drowning prevention advice in the UK. In 2017 BBC Radio Two show presenter, Simon Mayo, declared that he ‘could not float.’ Many persons in the UK identified with this claim. Despite having been an activity in many traditional swimming lessons floating is not a straight-forward skill for all to master. It requires a high degree of personal trust to have developed in the water. I discuss what learning to float fundamentally entails based on recent publications …

It Is In The Cards: An Analysis Of Greeting Card Selection Through Identity And Personality, Emily Topilow

Factors, including personality, relationships, and identity will be qualitatively analyzed to understand people’s buying habits. Certain factors, including gender, personality, relationships, type of card, and frequency of receiving and giving cards, will be qualitatively analyzed for frequency. The two theories analyzed were the Social Identity Theory (SIT) and the Identity Theory (IT).

525 college-aged students were surveyed to examine their purchasing habits of greeting cards. The results showed that the identity of the card giver and the identity of the card …
