Keep 'Em Fighting: Chris-Craft's Contribution To Wwii, Geoffrey D. Reynolds Jul 2019

Keep 'Em Fighting: Chris-Craft's Contribution To Wwii, Geoffrey D. Reynolds

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces clamored over the sides of large troop ships into 4126 landing craft, many of those LCVPs (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel), and prepared to storm several beaches of northern France in Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day. Preparation for this day started in the early 1942 as companies throughout the United States converted their factories from peacetime to wartime production. In Michigan, all three Chris-Craft Corporation plants quickly converted from pleasure boat building to building boats for the war effort full time. Together, the three plants would become part of the America’s arsenal of democracy …

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Supply chain sustainability has become one of the most attractive decision management topics. There are many articles that have focused on this field presenting many different points of view. This research is centred on the evaluation of supply chain sustainability based on two critical dimensions. The first is the importance of evaluation metrics based on economic, environmental and social aspects, and the second is the degree of difficulty of information gathering. This paper aims to increase the accuracy of the evaluation. The proposed method is a combination of quality function deployment (QFD) with plithogenic aggregation operations. The aggregation operation is …

Investigating Managerial Priority Of Environmental Inputs And Outputs In Public Assembly Venues, Walker Ross Jul 2019

Investigating Managerial Priority Of Environmental Inputs And Outputs In Public Assembly Venues, Walker Ross

Theses and Dissertations

This study was focused on understanding how managers of public assembly venues prioritize the various manager-perceived environmental inputs and outputs of the operation of their building when making decisions on environmental sustainability. Such research is necessary as there was little to no understanding of the operational impacts of sport on the natural environment. A survey of managers of public assembly venues that utilized the best-worst scaling method of experimental design and analysis was utilized to gather data that appropriately addressed the research question posed by this study. Findings suggest that managers prioritize the environmental inputs and outputs of their buildings …

Three Essays In Firm Financing Decision, Gerard Savio Pinto Jul 2019

Three Essays In Firm Financing Decision, Gerard Savio Pinto

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of three essays on financing decisions by firms. The first essay examines the cost of borrowing in the syndicated loan market for recent IPO firms. We find evidence of informational rent extraction by IPO underwriters that lend to firms after going public. The (informed) lender affiliated to the IPO underwriter on average earns a 5% higher abnormal payoff (interest) than an unaffiliated lender. When these loans commence trading on the secondary market, loans originated by affiliated lenders increase by 97 bps more than loans originated by unaffiliated lenders. Thus, the primary and secondary market evidence supports …

Multiple Concurrent Framing Effects: Evidence From A Risky Tax Decision, Ethan Gregory Lamothe Jul 2019

Multiple Concurrent Framing Effects: Evidence From A Risky Tax Decision, Ethan Gregory Lamothe

Theses and Dissertations

Prior research finds an individual’s end of year tax position is framed by expectations (e.g., prior year tax position) and withholding position (i.e., refund vs additional taxes due), and suggests individuals concurrently maintain and are influenced by multiple reference points. In this study, I examine a theoretical explanation for how multiple reference points can influence an individual’s decisions even though the shape of the prospect theory value function is based on a single reference point. Specifically, I predict expectations influence decisions through a risky choice framing effect which is caused by diminishing sensitivity in the prospect theory value function while …

Corporate acquisition is among the most important strategic tools wielded by managers to achieve competitive advantage. Acquisition may create strategic values for the acquirer by gaining market power through industry consolidation, diversifying into rapidly growing industries, entering into emerging markets, and most importantly by combining unique valuable resources from acquirer and target. Despite the many appealing aspects of the motive for acquisition, however, meta-analytical studies suggest that though highly beneficial for the target firm’s shareholders, acquisition on average destroys acquirer shareholder values. to understand the determinants of acquisition performance success, it becomes imperative to study the antecedents as well as …

Family As A Source Of Inequality Reproduction In Organizations: The Role Of Family Impact On Work In Explaining The Class Ceiling, Pooja Mishra Jul 2019

Family As A Source Of Inequality Reproduction In Organizations: The Role Of Family Impact On Work In Explaining The Class Ceiling, Pooja Mishra

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Being born into a poorer family is associated with lower socioeconomic attainment even when people are provided with identical educational and job opportunities, a pattern known as the “class ceiling.” The class ceiling is generated within organizations, but specific reasons causing this effect are not well understood. I propose that one important explanation why employees from poorer families do not fare as well as their more fortunate co-workers concerns differences in families themselves. I integrate research from sociology and psychology explaining challenges faced by families with scarce resources with organizational research on specific pathways through which families can interfere with …

Role Of Financial, Human And Social Capital In Survival Of Start-Ups, Tiong Kiat Wong Jul 2019

Role Of Financial, Human And Social Capital In Survival Of Start-Ups, Tiong Kiat Wong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In new business ventures, growth in itself is often not the main intention in the beginning, but rather a mean to ensure survivability first, follow by sustainability and secure profitability. Not all small businesses survived over time and are always confronted with the liability of newness and contending externalities such as fierce competition and internal limitations like resources to survive. Only about half of newly founded start-ups survived after 5 years.

The presence or absence of resources and the critical role it plays on the effect of venture’s survival, provides substantive advancement in understanding of organisational theory and management practice …

Effect Of Cultural Differences On Budgetary Slack, Shawn L. Robey Jul 2019

Effect Of Cultural Differences On Budgetary Slack, Shawn L. Robey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Budgeting enables the firm to allocate resources among subunits (Braun & Tietz, 2018). Gallani, Krishman, Marinich, and Shields (2018) noted that providing employees an opportunity to misreport private information is a disadvantage of employee participation in the budgeting process. Research suggests that perceptions of unfairness can result in increased misreporting by subordinates (Fisher, Peffer, Sprinkle, & Williamson, 2015). Individuals value fairness and equity in resource allocation settings (Drake, Matuszewski, & Miller, 2014). Ethics Position Theory (EPT) suggests that people’s reactions in morally toned situations can be traced to variations in their intuitive, personal moral philosophies. According to Forsyth, O'Boyle, and …

A Descriptive Study Of Variable Discretization And Cost-Sensitive Logistic Regression On Imbalanced Credit Data, Lili Zhang, Jennifer Priestley, Herman Ray, Soon Tan Jul 2019

A Descriptive Study Of Variable Discretization And Cost-Sensitive Logistic Regression On Imbalanced Credit Data, Lili Zhang, Jennifer Priestley, Herman Ray, Soon Tan

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

Training classification models on imbalanced data tends to result in bias towards the majority class. In this paper, we demonstrate how variable discretization and cost-sensitive logistic regression help mitigate this bias on an imbalanced credit scoring dataset, and further show the application of the variable discretization technique on the data from other domains, demonstrating its potential as a generic technique for classifying imbalanced data beyond credit scoring. The performance measurements include ROC curves, Area under ROC Curve (AUC), Type I Error, Type II Error, accuracy, and F1 score. The results show that proper variable discretization and cost-sensitive logistic regression with …

Finding The Perfect Match: Dimension Analysis And Development Of The External Sponsorship Congruence Scale, Kelly Evans Jul 2019

Finding The Perfect Match: Dimension Analysis And Development Of The External Sponsorship Congruence Scale, Kelly Evans

Theses and Dissertations

The biggest problem interfering with effective sport sponsorships is marketing clutter and the negative impact it has on sponsorship recall accuracy (Cornwell & Relyea, 2000; Rumpf, 2012; Seguin & O’Reilly, 2008). Previous research shows that external sponsorship congruence plays an important role in how consumers remember and recall sport sponsors (Cornwell et al., 2005; Fleck et al., 2012; Jagre et al., 2001; Olson & Thjømøe, 2011; Solomon, 1996; Stangor & McMillan, 1992), ultimately influencing consumer attitudes and behavior (Close & Lacey, 2013; Gwinner & Bennett, 2008; Lee & Thorson, 2008; Simmons & Becker-Olson, 2006). Great strides have been made in …

Retail Format Selection In On-The-Go Shopping Situations, Sabine Benoit, Heiner Evanschitzky, Christoph Teller Jul 2019

Retail Format Selection In On-The-Go Shopping Situations, Sabine Benoit, Heiner Evanschitzky, Christoph Teller

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Consumers patronize different store formats to purchase products. Prior literature describes store and format choices for big, multi-item shopping baskets, but limited insights determine consumers' unique shopping routines when they seek to buy just one or a few items while on the go. Such shopping situations might affect consumers' format selections for both search and experience goods. This study uses multi-attribute utility theory to develop a framework, tested with a scenario-based experiment. For search goods, a format's economic utility (price level, speed) is more important; its functional utility (quality, variety) and psychological utility (atmosphere, service) become less important considerations. Furthermore, …
