Enhancing Public Speaking Confidence, Skills, And Performance: An Experiment Of Service-Learning, D. Brian Mcnatt Jul 2019

Enhancing Public Speaking Confidence, Skills, And Performance: An Experiment Of Service-Learning, D. Brian Mcnatt

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Much of service-learning research has been characterized as anecdotal and testimonial with widespread calls for more empirical data to support the claimed benefits of this pedagogical tool. The present longitudinal experiment answered these calls by testing the effect of service-learning projects on several oral communication skills during a 4-month period, as well as some boundary conditions affecting this impact. The intervention consisted of involvement in 1 of 20 different team-developed service-learning projects compared to traditional research projects. This was hypothesized to boost management students' public speaking self-efficacy, lower anxiety, and improve public speaking mechanics competence along with actual public speaking …

Auditing Under The Influence: The Role Of Client Gender In Audit Negotiations, Jennifer Hamrick Jul 2019

Auditing Under The Influence: The Role Of Client Gender In Audit Negotiations, Jennifer Hamrick

PhD in Business Administration Dissertations

Client characteristics, one antecedent to auditor judgments (Hurtt, et al. 2013), have considerable influence on auditor-client negotiations of proposed audit adjustments, and ultimately audit quality. Client gender is one specific characteristic that has received recent attention for its influence on financial statement conservatism and audit fees. However, there is little empirical evidence on the influence of client gender on auditor-client negotiation outcomes. Client gender is expected to influence auditor judgments such that auditors are expected to propose lower audit adjustments to male (vs. female) clients due to the lower source credibility typically assigned to females (Kray, Galinsky, & Thompson, 2002; …

Two Essays On Investor Attention, Investor Sentiment, And Earnings Pricing, Qiuye Cai Jul 2019

Two Essays On Investor Attention, Investor Sentiment, And Earnings Pricing, Qiuye Cai

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation proposes novel direct measures for both firm-level and market-level investor attention and investor sentiment and provides new empirical evidence on the effects of investor attention and investor sentiment on earnings pricing.

The first essay proposes novel direct measures for both market-level and firm-level attention using user activity data from StockTwits.com. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first direct measure of market-level attention. By measuring market-level and firm-level attention separately, I am be able to not only distinguish between attention allocated on market level and firm level but also detach attention from equilibrium outcomes. I document …

An Exploration Of The Relationships Between Sense Of Community, Park Benefits, And Neighborhood Park Use, Kimberly Tilford Centers

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between park use by residents that live within a ¼ to ½ mile radius of their neighborhood park, perceived benefits from neighborhood parks, and neighborhood sense of community (SOC) in three Norfolk, Virginia neighborhoods. The neighborhoods included Titustown, Colonial Place, and Edgewater. There is a lack of research regarding the relationship between neighborhood parks, perceived recreation benefits from neighborhood parks, and their relationship to neighborhood SOC (Gómez, Baur, Hill, & Georgiev, 2015). Participants completed a questionnaire that included the Sense of Community Index-2 (SCI-2), demographic questions, park usage questions, and …

Two Essays On Bitcoin Price And Volume, Mohammad Bayani Khaknejad Jul 2019

Two Essays On Bitcoin Price And Volume, Mohammad Bayani Khaknejad

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Bitcoin is a decentralized peer to peer digital transactions system that was introduced in 2009 in the aftermath of the financial crisis. Since its introduction, it has had a volatile journey, being adopted by computer programmers, cyber punk enthusiasts, criminals, and financial investors. While the future of bitcoin is still not clear, it has been widely adopted by many, not necessarily as a new method of transactions, but rather as a new investment vehicle. Being a new asset class, there are many unknown financial characteristics to be investigated about bitcoin and in this dissertation, we try to explore two of …

A Case Study Of Participant Responses To Organizational Change Involving Technology In The National Security Domain: How Informal Processes Iterate Structure And Outcomes, Brian E. Martinez

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

Nuanced differences between organizations and the pace of change within the national security domain have routinely produced equivocal results involving information and communication technology (ICT) development. These results are characterized by unpredictable costs, unrealistic delivery schedules, and dubious ICT performance in-use. This research is a case study exploration of organizational change involving technology (also referred to as ICT) in the national security domain of the public sector.

This research used machine learning and manual content analysis to compare the results of three experiments on interview transcripts. The first experiment investigated linkages between empirical and interpretive elements of organizational change. Empirical …

Leveraging Railroad Land Grants And The Benefits Accruing In The New Economic Landscape, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill Jul 2019

Leveraging Railroad Land Grants And The Benefits Accruing In The New Economic Landscape, Brian Gurney, Joshua P. Hill

Journal of Transportation Management

Unlike most companies, the major railroads in the United States have proven highly resilient to the vicissi- tudes of the market. We argue that this is due neither to the unique nature of rail haulage nor to superior management acumen. Rather this solidity is due to an immense wealth transfer to the railroads in the nine- teenth century that has dramatic impacts in the present. Moreover, the government protection and encouragement that rail grants represent did not end in the nineteenth century. It continues and represents an intangible asset that, while not on railroads’ balance sheet, is very real indeed.

Teaching Supply Chain Management: A Proposal For Future Research On Using Real World Sports And Other Analogies, Jeff A. Rightmer Jul 2019

Teaching Supply Chain Management: A Proposal For Future Research On Using Real World Sports And Other Analogies, Jeff A. Rightmer

Journal of Transportation Management

Teaching supply chain management (SCM) to undergraduates that are not Supply Chain Management majors can be difficult. This often is the case when teaching a business school core course that all majors must take. The motivation of these non-SCM students is sometimes just to pass and move on to their major course of study. Using a number of cases and examples from the real world that the students can relate to may help increase attention and learning. The increased interest level may give students a better understanding of supply chains. This article discusses approaches to teaching the core course with …

A Conceptual And Qualitative Study Of Outsourcing Criteria And The Role Of Emotions In Decision-Making: The Case Of Equine Sports Transportation Outsourcing, Stefan E. Genchev, Gordon T. Gray, Stacia Wert-Gray

Journal of Transportation Management

For years, transportation outsourcing was considered a formal transaction-cost economics decision with little or no consideration for additional factors. This limiting perspective provides the stimulus for the current qualitative study, which examines additional factors affecting the transportation decision. For this article, the equine industry is studied in order to gain a better understanding of additional factors that go into decision- making. In-depthinterviewswithhorseownersandtrainersintheequineindustryrevealedthat,inaddition to a detailed cognitive assessment of transporter capabilities, the outsourcing decision involves a considerableemotionalcomponent. Development Of Research Administration And Management System For Higher Education Institutions In Developing Countries: Case Study Of Durban University Of Technology, Misheck Nyirenda, Oludayo Olufolorunsho Olugbara, Sibusiso Moyo

The African Journal of Information Systems

Research information management has become an essential activity for higher education institutions (HEIs) worldwide as a mechanism to aggregate, curate, utilize and improve the transparency of information about research. It has led to the evolution of proprietary software systems for administering and managing research information in HEIs. However, the literature reveals that most proprietary software systems are usually inflexible, costly to maintain and do not adequately satisfy the dynamic requirements of HEIs in developing countries. Consequently, the demand for current information systems is to incorporate a high degree of formalism into software development processes to produce correct, flexible, usable and …

The Role Of Institutional Pressures In The Adoption Of E-Procurement In Public Institutions In Developing Countries: The Case Of Lesotho, Salah Kabanda, Nteboheleng Pitso, Meke Kapepo

The African Journal of Information Systems

Benefits of E-Procurement are now well documented as experienced by both public and private organizations. Yet, in developing countries, and more so in Africa, few organizations have reported benefits of E-Procurement. Whilst institutional pressures are instrumental in shaping organization’s actions and outcomes with regard to technology adoption, few studies have examined their role in E-Procurement adoption in African public sector organizations. This study situated in Lesotho, seeks to examine the rational for E-procurement adoption in the public sector and identifies institutional pressures that affect successful adoption. Following an interpritivist approach, this study identifies (1) perceived benefits of efficiency and transparency …

Squeezed Out Of The Marketplace: Legal And Policy Issues Pertaining To Airline Seating Configurations, Daniel Friedenzohn, Stephen Shrewsbury Jul 2019

Squeezed Out Of The Marketplace: Legal And Policy Issues Pertaining To Airline Seating Configurations, Daniel Friedenzohn, Stephen Shrewsbury

Publications

The quality of airline service in the United States has received a significant amount of attention since the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 went into effect. Much of that attention has been negative due to efforts by the airlines to find ways to increase revenue by charging for services that were once included in the price of a ticket, such as charging for checked luggageI and other add-on fees for passengers. 2 Given the high level of competition during much of this period, it was certainly expected, and to some extent understandable, that carriers would attempt to find new revenue …

Credit Ratings And The Cost Of Issuing Seasoned Equity, Garrett A. Mcbrayer Jul 2019

Credit Ratings And The Cost Of Issuing Seasoned Equity, Garrett A. Mcbrayer

Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

I examine the effects of issuer credit ratings on the costs associated with seasoned equity offerings (SEOs). The evidence from a panel of SEOs from 1990 to 2014 shows that when firms issue seasoned equity, those with issuer credit ratings pay reduced investment banking fees. I confirm these results by conducting a propensity-score matched-sample comparison analysis of firms that obtain new, long-term issuer credit ratings with an unrated control group. Controlling for known determinants of SEO fees, I find that firms that obtain a new credit rating before issuing seasoned equity pay significantly reduced investment banking fees. In economic terms, …

Zhvillimi ekonomik I një vendi varet nga shumë faktor, por një faktor kyç është eksporti në vendet e tjera. Eksporti nënkupton shitjen e mallrave dhe shërbimeve në vendet e tjera. Do Accounting Firm Consulting Revenues Affect Audit Quality? Evidence From The Pre- And Post-Sox Eras, Ling Lei Lisic, Linda A. Myers, Robert Pawlewicz, Timothy A. Seidel

Accountancy Faculty Publications

In recent years, public accounting firms have experienced a steady increase in the proportion of their revenues generated from consulting services. Although growth in consulting revenue following the Sarbanes‐Oxley Act (SOX) has been generated primarily from services provided to nonaudit clients, regulators have expressed concerns about the potential implications of this increase for audit quality. In contrast, accounting firms assert that the expertise developed by their consulting professionals helps them to provide better quality audits. We examine the relation between the proportion of accounting firm consulting revenue to total revenue and audit quality and investor perceptions of audit quality. Because …

Human Capital Resource Development In Teams: Antecedents, Consequences, And Scale Development Of Human Capital Resources, Jieun Park

Theses and Dissertations

Although a large body of human capital research supports the critical role of human capital resource (HCR) in unit performance, very little research has paid attention to how to measure HCR, where HCR originates, and how HCR influences team performance. Given the lack of a measure that reflects the unique characteristics of HCR (e.g., transformation of individual KSAOs through emergence processes), I develop and validate a new comprehensive HCR scale. I test a 14-item scale with a sample of 97 undergraduate students in 24 teams. Results show this scale is internally consistent, reliable, and valid. In addition, drawing on human …

Mapping Consumer Cognition And Emotions: A Neuroscientific Approach, Dongjun Rew Jul 2019

Mapping Consumer Cognition And Emotions: A Neuroscientific Approach, Dongjun Rew

Theses and Dissertations

Although the rival theories for consumer decision making process, cognitive perspective and experiential perspective, have successfully contributed to the marketing discipline, there is an alternative point of view that cognition and emotions work together for a decision or even a behavior. However, the methodological limitation has been a big hurdle that interrupts insightfulness and fruitfulness of marketing research, especially in consumer research. This study thus aims to develop a brain map and functional connectivity of consumer decision making and emotions to show physiological and neurological evidence that emotional behaviors and cognitive behaviors are associated when consumers decide a behavior by …

The Importance Of Leadership Motivational Activities In Encouraging International Students To Return To Their Tier 1 Universities, Eric Hall Jul 2019

The Importance Of Leadership Motivational Activities In Encouraging International Students To Return To Their Tier 1 Universities, Eric Hall

Dissertations

Abstract

The problem is international students are not returning to their undergraduate Tier 1 institutions during a period when quality student enrollment is essential, and there is scant research on academic advising strategies that can be used to combat international student attrition at these universities (O’Keefe, 2013). Studies have often lumped all international students together and made efforts to attract more international students, but the reasons why international students chose research universities, and returned, were not being investigated in this manner (Hegarty, 2014).

The purpose of this proposed study was to gain an understanding of the decision-making and reasoning processes …
