Open Educational Resources Collection

Organizational Behavior bridges the gap between theory and practice with a distinct "experiential" approach.

On average, a worker in the USA will change jobs 10 times in 20 years. In order to succeed in this type of career situation, individuals need to be armed with the tools necessary to be life-long learners. To that end, this book is not be about giving students all the answers to every situation they may encounter when they start their first job or as they continue up the career ladder. The Status Of Women In Utah Politics: A 2017 Update, Susan R. Madsen, D. Candice Pierucci

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) released four research and policy briefs on the status of women in Utah politics, education, nonprofits, and business. These were initially prompted by the Center for American Progress report titled “The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation” that ranked Utah last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. Soon after, a series of other national reports also gave Utah poor rankings, and most used the following four criteria: 1) gender wage gap, 2) educational attainment, 3) …

A Focus On Engagement: Defining, Measuring, And Nurturing A Key Pillar Of Aacsb Standards, Isabelle Dostaler, Melanie A. Robinson, Thomas J. Tomberlin

Organization Management Journal

The 2013 Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Standards emphasize three “pillars” upon which schools accredited by the association must regularly demonstrate quality improvement, namely, impact, innovation, and engagement. Focusing on the last of these, our article examines the concept of engagement through both a content analysis of the 2013 AACSB Standards and an empirical study exploring different types of course-level engagement within an undergraduate business course (measured using the Student Course Engagement Questionnaire; Handelsman, Briggs, Sullivan, & Towler, 2005). The results of our content analysis of the 2013 AACSB Standards underscore the focus placed on engagement within …

Defining And Achieving Student Success At Non-Elite Schools, Charles J. Fornaciari, J. B. Arbaugh Jan 2017

Defining And Achieving Student Success At Non-Elite Schools, Charles J. Fornaciari, J. B. Arbaugh

Organization Management Journal

Ensuring student success has become an increasingly loud conversation for business schools. Unfortunately, most of the solutions offered within the literature tend to be proffered by those at elite institutions, and their advice unconsciously reflects that worldview. However, the vast majority of us do not work at elite institutions, even those residing in the, by definition, limited and prestigious universe of Assocation to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB)-accredited schools. Subsequently, the elites’ problems do not match our non-elite realities and, even worse, often push our issues into the background. This article seeks to explore three student success concerns …

Communication Through Social Technologies: A Study Of Israeli Women, Jeretta Horn Nord 405-747-0320, Dafni Biran Achituv, Joanna Paliszkiewicz

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Social technologies have changed the way we communicate allowing users to interact, share knowledge, reach out to friends and family, keep up with the news, and even promote and support a business. A study of Israeli women was conducted to determine how social technologies platforms — Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Google+ — are used and the benefits realized. Women worldwide face challenges including economic, educational, health, and political. Israel women, like women in every other country in the world, are challenged with gender inequity. Do women who use social technologies believe that these platforms provide empowerment leading to greater …

Exploring The Alchemy Of Qualitative Management Research: Seeking Trustworthiness, Credibility And Rigor Through Crystallization, Heather Stewart, Rod Gapp, Ian Harwood Jan 2017

Exploring The Alchemy Of Qualitative Management Research: Seeking Trustworthiness, Credibility And Rigor Through Crystallization, Heather Stewart, Rod Gapp, Ian Harwood

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we explore crystallization in terms of its contribution to qualitative management research. This exploration of crystallization is based on a postmodern view where we utilize triangulation as a point of departure. Currently, the use of crystallization is underdeveloped in the management discipline. Qualitative literature and metaphors are utilized to develop a focus on moving qualitative management research away from positivist terms. To do this we crystalize crystallization with an emphasis on the embodiment of the qualitative researcher as the primary tool in addition to the development of rigor through credibility and trustworthiness. This conceptual approach can benefit …

Technology Transfer Versus Transformation, Ian Aguilar, Dan Mertens, Paul Shelton Jan 2017

Technology Transfer Versus Transformation, Ian Aguilar, Dan Mertens, Paul Shelton

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Research defines technology transfer from the viewpoint of business processes and personnel skills (Rogers, Takegami & Yin, 2001). The focus is on action to adapt and embrace an existing technology to gain efficiency (Gilsing et al., 2011). We examine this phenomenon as innovation based on the ability to transfer existing needs, desires, behaviors, and expectations to new technology. We find technology is adopted when transfer opportunities become manifest and each transfer builds upon its predecessor to create transformation in the long term. This relationship between transfer and transformation gradually builds technology adoption across chasms of the S-curve technology innovation curve.

Virtues And Exchange: A Biblical Reframing Of Adam Smith’S Vision Of Marketplace Ethics, Nate Peach, Joshua Sauerwein, Seth Sikkema Jan 2017

Virtues And Exchange: A Biblical Reframing Of Adam Smith’S Vision Of Marketplace Ethics, Nate Peach, Joshua Sauerwein, Seth Sikkema

Faculty Publications - College of Business

This paper explores ways in which Christian business educators can integrate Adam Smith’s views on marketplace ethics into a biblical framework. Often Smith’s thoughts on self-interest are highlighted without reference to his insights regarding the role of virtue in commercial life. After outlining two dominant interpretations of Smith, his ideas are integrated with a biblical conception of commercial life as stewardship. The goal of this integration is to aid Christian business faculty in their continued efforts to go beyond career preparation in their courses to include the higher telos of Christ-like character.

The Intersection Of Religiosity, Workplace Spirituality And Ethical Sensitivity In Practicing Accountants, Joshua Sauerwein Jan 2017

The Intersection Of Religiosity, Workplace Spirituality And Ethical Sensitivity In Practicing Accountants, Joshua Sauerwein

Faculty Publications - College of Business

A broad range of ethical decisions cross the desk of practicing accountants everyday. Rest and Narvaez (1994) theorized that ethical sensitivity is influenced by personal factors such as religion. Using Rest’s theory, this study found that workplace spirituality was positively related to ethical sensitivity and extrinsic religiosity was negatively related to ethical sensitivity. In additional analysis significant associations were found between the meaning an accountant ascribes to their job and ethical sensitivity. Significant differences in ethical sensitivity were also observed across the accountant’s role. The results of this study provide evidence that religion and spirituality are associated with ethical sensitivity …

The Halloween Indicator Is More A Treat Than A Trick, Robert Lloyd, Chengping Zhang, Stevin Rydin Jan 2017

The Halloween Indicator Is More A Treat Than A Trick, Robert Lloyd, Chengping Zhang, Stevin Rydin

Faculty Publications - College of Business

This paper uses stock market returns (2007-2015) and confirms the existence of Halloween effect anomaly after the 2008 financial crisis. Findings suggest that the Halloween effect can still be observed in 34 out of the 35 countries. A more aggressive trading strategy of shorting the market during summer and taking a long position in winter yields 4.77% more than the buy-and-hold strategy. A new explanation is offered for the persistence of the Halloween effect. A positive feedback between investors’ belief and behavior causes the market to underperform in the summer and recover in the winter, resulting in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Do Women Have What It Takes? A Study Of Advancement And Leadership In Accountancy, Michelle Saturnino Jan 2017

Do Women Have What It Takes? A Study Of Advancement And Leadership In Accountancy, Michelle Saturnino

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

This paper examines prior quantitative and qualitative research and statistical data relative to the issue of gender inequality that persists within accounting careers at upper-level management and partnership positions. The paper raises questions pertaining to the inequality that exists in upperlevel management and partner-level accounting positions in the United States. This may be true because, the work place in the accounting profession is not responding to its environment in ways that accommodate changes at a fast-enough pace, given that there is a shift to Generation X accounting professionals upon the retirement of the Baby Boomers. As different generations progress toward …

Governance Interactions In Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Errol Meidinger Jan 2017

Governance Interactions In Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Errol Meidinger

Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers

“Supply chains” are a major site of transnational business governance, and yet their dynamics and effectiveness are usually more assumed than interrogated in regulatory governance discourse. The very term “chain” implies a more determinist and simplistic understanding of supply relationships than is empirically supportable. Supply chains in practice are complex, dynamic, and highly variable networks. Based on peer-group presentations by over 60 supply chain professionals, this paper analyzes sustainable supply chain management practices in terms of the interactions conceptions of the Transnational Business Governance Interactions framework. It discusses possible refinements of the framework and suggests that sustainable supply chain management …
