The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This paper examines the linkages between residential property prices and residential property loans in Malaysia from 1999 to 2015. Even though residential properties are a basic necessity, there are few studies that estimate the long-run and short-run relationships between loans and price levels in residential properties in Malaysia. The estimations are divided into two parts: the detection of long-run relationships and the estimation the long-run and short-run elasticities from an ARDL model. The results support the hypothesis that the loan supply has a positive impact on residential price levels; the robustness test and Granger causality test also support this conclusion. …

Stock Returns And Inflation: Evidence From Emerging Markets In Asia, Melati Laksmindra Isnandari, Dony Abdul Chalid

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This study examines the capability of stock from various industries to act as an inflation-hedge instrument, specifically in eight emerging-market Asian countries. By using monthly data for the period from 2001 to 2014, this study focuses on the relation between stock returns and inflation. The results of this study indicate that stocks from some non-cyclical industries have the capability to act as inflation-hedge instruments. Stocks that have the capability to inflation-hedge are come from industries with the natural characteristic of being a defensive industry.

Ceo Turnover And Firm Performance In Indonesia, Doddy Setiawan, Lian Kee Phua, Hong Kok Chee, Irwan Trinugroho

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

We investigated the effect of changes in CEO position on subsequent firm performance by studying 91 CEO turnovers in Indonesia. Our results show that firm performance decreases during the turnover year. Moreover, the incoming CEO does not increase firm performance in subsequent years. Indeed, there is evidence that firm performance decreases after such turnovers. We ultimately conclude that CEO turnovers in Indonesia do not have a positive effect on firm performance. Going further, we divided CEO turnovers into routine and non-routine turnovers on the basis of the turnover process. Both routine and non-routine CEO turnovers show similar results with all …

The present study aims to investigate and classify individual investors' objectives and strategies in the Tehran Stock Exchange. This study used two sets of data, investors' questionnaire and real data in TSE to comparing individual investors' strategies versus market strategies and used T-test, ANOVA and (LSD) to test hypotheses. Investment objectives are classified into five groups: building a financial buffer, capital growth, saving for retirement, investing as a hobby, and speculation; and three most common investment strategies are fundamental, technical and intuitive. The Dual-Beta Model: Evidence From The Malaysian Stock Market, Kim-Sin Teh, Wee-Yeap Lau

The study analyzes the beta-return characteristic, considering the asymmetric beta behavior in the up market versus the down market for the Bursa Malaysia (BM). This study uses a sample period from 2001-2015 with two dual-beta models, the capital asset pricing model (CAPM), and the Fama-French, three-factor (FF3F) model, to examine 60 stocks listed on the bourse. The estimated return and beta indicate that most stocks have experienced an increasing (decreasing) beta in the downtrend (uptrend) period. It is inferred that investors are rewarded with a positive risk premium for holding an asset in the down market, while the upside beta …

Operational performance of the U.S. airline industry has been monitored for the past 27 years by a quantitative model of metrics known as the Airline Quality Rating. The National Airline Quality Rating (http://airlinequalityrating.com) sets the industry standard for comparing performance quality among U.S. airlines. Criteria included in the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) report are screened to meet two basic elements: (1) they must be readily obtainable from published data sources for each airline, and (2) they must be important to consumers regarding airline quality. Results from this report are retrieved from the April 2016 Airline Quality Rating Report.

Right-to-work states are generally considered to be hostile environments for public employees who try to organize and secure union representation in order to maintain rights to fair treatment and just compensation through collective bargaining over an extended period of time.However, in one right-to-work state, Florida, we find examples of unions that have managed to survive and develop over decades. Two straight-forward but complex questions are addressed: how much time does it take to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement covering faculty in post-secondary institutions and what factors influence in the length of time involved? Are there any responses which will make sense? Can we offer any guidance? Permit first a few anecdotal stories and then a discussion about the internal and external factors that inform the answer to these questions and why the best answer may well be, “it depends.”

This study examines the impact of collective bargaining and local appropriations on salaries and fringe benefits of full-time faculty at U.S. community colleges. A more nuanced view is offered, by drawing appropriate institutional peer-group comparisons of rural, suburban, and urban community colleges to more accurately and precisely show just how much of a difference the presence or lack of collective bargaining, local appropriations, and the combined impact of both, actually make. Further, given the technical nature of the few comprehensive studies of fringe benefits for community college faculty, we integrate the findings of King and Maldanado.

This paper examines monetary compensation of 127,222 full-time faculty employed by the 390 regional universities in the United States who are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Compensation data published by the U.S. Department of Education and organizations concerned with faculty, including the American Association of University Professors and others, typically lump all four-year public university faculty together, ignoring well-known differences in teaching workloads at different types of public four-year universities (four instead of two courses taught each term, etc.). This article analyzes data accumulated during the first three quarters of 2016 regarding completed and pending questions of representation involving faculty and student employees in higher education. It is part of a larger and continuing National Center research project that tracks faculty and graduate student employee unionization growth and representation efforts at private and public institutions of higher learning since January 1, 2013.

The data presented in this article demonstrates that the rate of newly certified units at private colleges and universities since January 1, 2016 far outpaces new units in the public sector. There has been a 25.9% increase …
