Robust Optimization For Tree-Structured Stochastic Network Design, Xiaojian Wu, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon
Robust Optimization For Tree-Structured Stochastic Network Design, Xiaojian Wu, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Stochastic network design is a general framework for optimizing network connectivity. It has several applications in computational sustainability including spatial conservation planning, pre-disaster network preparation, and river network optimization. A common assumption in previous work has been made that network parameters (e.g., probability of species colonization) are precisely known, which is unrealistic in real- world settings. We therefore address the robust river network design problem where the goal is to optimize river connectivity for fish movement by removing barriers. We assume that fish passability probabilities are known only imprecisely, but are within some interval bounds. We then develop a planning …

What Doesn't Kill You Will Only Make You More Risk-Loving: Early-Life Disasters And Ceo Behavior, Gennaro Bernile, Vineet Bhagwat, P. Raghavendra Rau
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The literature on managerial style posits a linear relation between a chief executive officer's (CEOs) past experiences and firm risk. We show that there is a nonmonotonic relation between the intensity of CEOs’ early-life exposure to fatal disasters and corporate risk-taking. CEOs who experience fatal disasters without extremely negative consequences lead firms that behave more aggressively, whereas CEOs who witness the extreme downside of disasters behave more conservatively. These patterns manifest across various corporate policies including leverage, cash holdings, and acquisition activity. Ultimately, the link between CEOs’ disaster experience and corporate policies has real economic consequences on firm riskiness and …
Multinational Firms And Cash Holdings: Evidence From China, Weijun Wu, Yang Yang, Sili Zhou
Multinational Firms And Cash Holdings: Evidence From China, Weijun Wu, Yang Yang, Sili Zhou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
To adapt to globalization, Chinese multinational firms have more exploitation of cash. This paper shows that Chinese multinational corporations (MNCs) do not hold significantly more cash relative to domestic firms unless these multinationals heavily relay on the foreign sales. In addition, the multinationals of non-State-Owned Enterprises (Non-SOEs) exhibit the insignificant difference in cash holdings for non-multinationals. We also find that Chinese MNCs invest more but are less profitable, especially in non-SOE subsample. Overall, we conclude that the need of cash liquidity of multinational corporations in China is different from those in U.S.

This paper studies the effects of exempt treatment of financial services under a VATsystem. We develop a general equilibrium model with elastic labor supply, endogenous entry, anda banking sector. The banking sector provides loan services to producers and payment servicesto consumers. Our model display three key distortions under exempt treatment: (i) self-supplybias in the banking sector, (ii) consumption distortions, (iii) input distortions and tax cascading. Then, we calibrate our model to match the salient features of the tax system EU countries. Atax neutral policy regime switch from exempt treatment to full-taxation in loan services improveswelfare about 4%. Shutting down the entry …
Strategic Silence: Withholding Certification Status As A Hypocrisy Avoidance Tactic, W. Chad Carlos, Ben William Lewis
Strategic Silence: Withholding Certification Status As A Hypocrisy Avoidance Tactic, W. Chad Carlos, Ben William Lewis
Faculty Publications
We examine why organizations that obtain prominent certifications may at times elect not to publicize them. Drawing on the impression management literature, we argue and show that concerns about being perceived as hypocritical may cause organizations to strategically withhold their certification status. Using a longitudinal panel of corporations that were members of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a prominent environmental certification, we show that in the face of reputational threats, organizations are less likely to publicize their certification status when the threat appears to directly contradict the claims implied by the certification. Our findings suggest that the threat of hypocrisy …
An Exploration Of The Organizational Attributes That Attract High Quality Pilots To Regional Airlines, Andrew Reitz
An Exploration Of The Organizational Attributes That Attract High Quality Pilots To Regional Airlines, Andrew Reitz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify which organizational attributes affected the decision to apply to or accept an employment offer as a pilot for a regional airline. The regional airlines in the United States faced a significant shortage of qualified pilot applicants. The shortage was expected to worsen over the next decade. It came from an increase in mandatory retirements, major airline growth and hiring, an increase in pilots leaving the profession coupled with a reduction in the number of candidates beginning flight training. Those regional carriers that could meet the most needs and desires of applicants would …
Determining The Multi-Scale Hedge Ratios Of Stock Index Futures Using The Lower Partial Moments Method, Jun Dai, Haigang Zhou
Determining The Multi-Scale Hedge Ratios Of Stock Index Futures Using The Lower Partial Moments Method, Jun Dai, Haigang Zhou
Business Faculty Publications
This paper considers a multi-scale future hedge strategy that minimizes lower partial moments (LPM). To do this, wavelet analysis is adopted to decompose time series data
into different components. Next, different parametric estimation methods with known distributions are applied to calculate the LPM of hedged portfolios, which is the key to
determining multi-scale hedge ratios over different time scales. Then these parametric methods are compared with the prevailing nonparametric kernel metric method. Empirical results indicate that in the China Securities Index 300 (CSI 300) index futures and spot markets, hedge ratios and hedge efficiency estimated by the nonparametric kernel metric …
Buzz Factor Or Innovation Potential: What Explains Cryptocurrencies’ Returns?, Sha Wang, Jean-Philippe Vergne
Buzz Factor Or Innovation Potential: What Explains Cryptocurrencies’ Returns?, Sha Wang, Jean-Philippe Vergne
Business Publications
Cryptocurrencies have become increasingly popular since the introduction of bitcoin in 2009. In this paper, we identify factors associated with variations in cryptocurrencies’ market values. In the past, researchers argued that the “buzz” surrounding cryptocurrencies in online media explained their price variations. But this observation obfuscates the notion that cryptocurrencies, unlike fiat currencies, are technologies entailing a true innovation potential. By using, for the first time, a unique measure of innovation potential, we find that the latter is in fact the most important factor associated with increases in cryptocurrency returns. By contrast, we find that the buzz surrounding cryptocurrencies is …

Adaptive Acquisition: An Evolving Framework For Tailoring Engineering And Procurement Of Defense Systems, Christopher Gunderson
AFIT Documents
The Defense Acquisition System, as documented in DoDI 5000.02, mandates that programs should not follow process models by rote. Rather, stakeholders should tailor program activities and documentation according to specific requirements, priorities, risks, and boundary conditions. Adaptive acquisition provides an evolving set of broadly applicable adaptive engineering and adaptive procurement tools and processes intended to help tailor acquisition programs.

Empirical Reflections On Women Students In Usa Nonprofit Academic Programs And Realizations About Ideological Influence, Norman A. Dolch
Empirical Reflections On Women Students In Usa Nonprofit Academic Programs And Realizations About Ideological Influence, Norman A. Dolch
Journal of Ideology
This research reports on the beliefs of a select sample of women and men faculty across the USA regarding women in nonprofit organization academic programs. The main differences were on professional orientation among graduate students, difficulty with quantitative oriented courses, and portrayal of women in coursework. To eliminate these differences, beliefs (ideologies) among faculty and students need to be altered. Sanberg’s book Lean In is especially informative about changing beliefs about career orientation for both men and women to what she calls a belief in sustainable and fulfilling positions. Another valuable resource for faculty concerned about these issues is Creating …
An Exploratory Study On The Effect Of Price As An Anchor On Willingness-To-Pay, Jae-Do Song
An Exploratory Study On The Effect Of Price As An Anchor On Willingness-To-Pay, Jae-Do Song
Asia Marketing Journal
The two competing underlying mechanisms of anchoring, anchoring-and-adjustment and selective accessibility, have very different managerial implications for the effect of price as an anchor on willingness-to-pay (WTP). To clarify their relative roles in inducing the anchoring effect, path analysis modeling in which two paths are included in a single model was utilized. The first path proceeds directly from anchor price to WTP, representing anchor-and-adjustment. The second path, representing selective accessibility, includes a mediator formed by various explanatory variables of WTP. The results consistently show that only the direct path, anchoring-and-adjustment, is significant. The results also show that the level of …
Does The Variance Of Customer Satisfaction Matter For Firm Performance?, Eun Young Lee, Shijin Yoo, Dong Wook Lee
Does The Variance Of Customer Satisfaction Matter For Firm Performance?, Eun Young Lee, Shijin Yoo, Dong Wook Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
Although much attention has been paid to customer satisfaction (CS) as a leading indicator of firm performance, few studies have investigated the role of CS distribution across individual customers. With 10 years of National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) data in Korea, we examine the relationship between the variance of CS and key corporate performance measures such as revenue, profit, Tobin’s q, and stock return.
There are three main findings. First, we confirm the findings of previous studies that the average CS for a firm is related to the firm’s economic performance. Second, we find a moderating effect of CS variance …
A Direct Utility Model With Dynamic Constraint, Byungyeon Kim, Takuya Satomura, Jaehwan Kim
A Direct Utility Model With Dynamic Constraint, Byungyeon Kim, Takuya Satomura, Jaehwan Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
The goal of the study is to understand how consumers’ constraint as opposed to utility structure gives rise to final decision when consumers purchase more than one variant of product at a time, i.e., horizontal variety seeking or multiple-discreteness. Purchase and consumption decision not only produces utility but also involves some sort of cognitive pressure. Past consumption or last purchase is likely to be linked to this burden we face such as concern for obesity, risk of harm, and guilt for mischief. In this research, the existence and the role of dynamic constraint are investigated through a microeconomic utility model …

Shiraz Vs Syrah Crafting Advertising Campaign, Using Sensory Images, Kyoung Sung Choi
Shiraz Vs Syrah Crafting Advertising Campaign, Using Sensory Images, Kyoung Sung Choi
Asia Marketing Journal
Little research on sensory study has been conducted from a marketing perspective and most of sensory studies have been done from a science perspective. Thus, this study examined wine sensory perceptions in the consumers’ minds, which is how wine consumers associate grape variety Shiraz/Syrah by the three different region of origins with specific sensory images. Total 234 questionnaires were collected from online wine community members at restaurants in Korea. The main results show that the most two shared sensory images of Shiraz/ Syrah were ‘Dry’ and ‘Fruity’ across the three region of origins. For Barossa Shiraz, the unique images were …

Impacts Of Reward Accrual Effort On Redemption Behavior In A Multi-Vendor Loyalty Program, Ji Yoon Kim, Janghyuk Lee, Sang Yong Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
This research explores two key facets of behavior (reward point accrual and redemption) that consist of a loyalty program. It focuses on assessing the impact of accrual effort level on three types of redemption behavior: speed, unit size, and hedonic preference at the individual level by using large scale transaction data from a multi-vendor loyalty program providing flexible environment for point accrual and redemption. Findings from this research demonstrate that customers tend 1) to speed up point redemption, 2) to enlarge the size of redeemed points, and 3) to prefer utilitarian rewards as the level of effort at the accrual …

Television Shopping At Home To Alleviate Loneliness Among Older Consumers, Min-Sun Lee, Jihye Park
Asia Marketing Journal
Despite widespread awareness of the importance of a middle-aging and older consumer market, it is surprising that very little research has been conducted on their in-home shopping behavior. Therefore, this study focused on middle-aging and older female television home shoppers and examined the effects of persuasive mentions of the show host and parasocial interaction on social involvement, perceived loneliness, mood, perceived risk and unplanned buying tendency. A total of 109 middle-aged and older female television shoppers responded. Results of path analysis revealed that persuasive mentions did not influence parasocial interaction. However, as middle-aging and older consumers more para-socially interacted with …
