Comparison Of Companies Issuing Pro-Forma Earnings And Restatements, Robert Jenson, Dr. Ted Christensen Sep 2013

Comparison Of Companies Issuing Pro-Forma Earnings And Restatements, Robert Jenson, Dr. Ted Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In recent years, companies have increasingly released financial performance numbers in addition to those required under generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”). These adjusted, or pro-forma earnings, have been a way for management to report earnings without extraordinary, one-time, or other items. Previous research suggests that management may use these pro-forma numbers to meet benchmarks such as analysts’ expectations when GAAP measurements fall short of these expectations.1 In addition, there are companies which – due to misstatements resulting from accounting errors or even fraud – are required to restate their earnings. These companies may have reported inflated earnings to reach benchmarks, …

Modeling The Skewness Of Stock Return Distributions Using A Bayesian Framework, Ian J. Wright, Dr. Keith P. Vorkink Sep 2013

Modeling The Skewness Of Stock Return Distributions Using A Bayesian Framework, Ian J. Wright, Dr. Keith P. Vorkink

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In order to make optimal portfolio choices, individuals, firms and portfolio managers are interested in the probabilities attached to their receiving various returns in the stock market. These probabilities of returns on securities are described by statistical functions called return distributions. However, much uncertainty concerning such return distributions exists and over the years many models have been created that attempt to predict the mean and variance of return distributions, and recently some have even been put forth that attempt to predict the skewness of such distributions. The skewness of return distributions is of import to investors in particular because the …

The Asymmetry Of Incentives For Small And Large Firms When Forming Technology Partnerships, Morgan Williams, Dr. David J. Bryce Sep 2013

The Asymmetry Of Incentives For Small And Large Firms When Forming Technology Partnerships, Morgan Williams, Dr. David J. Bryce

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Substantial friction exists in markets when sharing new innovation or realizing the gains that arise from innovation. This friction may create suboptimal outcomes for broader society because it can lead to situations in which the best innovations are not widely shared. For example, it is well-known that large, well-resourced technology firms often patent far beyond their target product markets in efforts to stave off competition from new or upstart entrants. Some of these incumbent firms also engage in alliances with innovative smaller firms with the explicit intent to suppress or exploit innovations emerging from the alliance. This has negative consequences …

Do Middle Managers Contribute To Their Organisation's Strategy?, Tony Kealy Sep 2013

Do Middle Managers Contribute To Their Organisation's Strategy?, Tony Kealy

Conference Papers

This paper presents an empirical study on the contribution made by middle managers to the development of strategy in an organisation. The data was collected using semi-structured interviews with four managers in randomly-chosen companies. Two of the participant managers held senior management positions while the other two held middle manager positions. The data was analysed using a qualitative approach. Previous studies in this field were found to be wide and varied. An early study by Mintzberg (1978) found that strategy mainly forms from emergent influences at middle and lower levels of the organisation, as well as from deliberate influences emanating …

Issue Brief: Auditing Your Town's Development Code For Barriers To Sustainable Water Management, New England Environmental Finance Center Sep 2013

Issue Brief: Auditing Your Town's Development Code For Barriers To Sustainable Water Management, New England Environmental Finance Center

Sustainable Communities Capacity Building

This issue brief is intended for town officials who want to understand how development regulations in their community affect local water resources. Municipal development codes – the set of regulations that control the built environment – can have a great influence on the availability of clean and healthy water for drinking, recreation, and commercial uses. This in turn affects the community’s social, environmental, and economic vitality.

Comprehensive plans, zoning codes, and building standards are just a few examples of regulations that intentionally or unintentionally regulate the way water is transported, collected and absorbed. Regulations that produce dispersed development or large …

Issue Brief: Saving By Mitigating, University Of Louisville, New England Environmental Finance Center

Sustainable Communities Capacity Building

Natural disasters can cause loss of life, inflict damage to buildings and infrastructure, and have devastating consequences for a community’s economic, social, and environmental well-being. Hazard mitigation means reducing damages from disasters.

Local governments have the responsibility to protect the health, safety, and welfare of their citizens. Proactive mitigation policies and actions help reduce risk and create safer, more disaster-resilient communities. Mitigation is an investment in your community’s future safety, equity, and sustainability.

The Era Of Incremental Change In The Technology Innovation Life Cycle: An Analysis Of The Automotive Emission Control Industry, Jaegul Lee, Nicholas Berente Sep 2013

The Era Of Incremental Change In The Technology Innovation Life Cycle: An Analysis Of The Automotive Emission Control Industry, Jaegul Lee, Nicholas Berente

Business Administration Faculty Research Publications

According to the life cycle model of technological evolution, after the emergence of a dominant design, technological product industries undergo an “era of incremental change.” This era of incremental change is not well understood in the existing literature. Although the period is typically characterized in terms of stability and minimal innovation, we find that the era of incremental change can be actually quite dynamic. Through our research into the period of time following the emergence of a dominant design in automotive emission control systems, we find that the overall product innovation in the industry did not decline immediately following the …

Business Of Analytics : Measuring Up In A Digital World, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Welcome to the digital world, where anyone who uses the internet is probably a statistic. The digitisation of our lives has generated an unprecedented surge of data prompting companies to pay big money for information to be collected, dissected and analysed so as to best reach their customers and make a sale. Not many, however, are aware of how to fully exploit opportunities in the new data-driven economy, says Joe Nguyen, Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific at comScore, a global data and digital analytics firm.

Closing The Leadership Gap In Asia, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Emerging Asian markets – which are expected by the International Monetary Fund to grow by 8.5 percent in 2014 – are indispensable for any large firm with aggressive growth commitments. Although such projections may prove optimistic, companies still rely on Asia to compensate for under-performing mature markets. CEOs in Asia report that their targets for regional business units average 5 percent above the rate of regional economic growth — a target that can only be reached by capturing significant market share from the competition. Over-performing in hypercompetitive

Asian markets depends, in large part, on the quantity and quality of Asia …

Is Manager Gender Important In The Performance Of Mutual Funds?, Steven Welch, Yunqing Wang Sep 2013

Is Manager Gender Important In The Performance Of Mutual Funds?, Steven Welch, Yunqing Wang

Accounting and Finance Faculty Publications

We investigate whether there are differences in characteristics and performance of mutual funds caused by the manager’s gender. Through examining a large sample of U.S. domestic equity mutual fund, we find some evidence that suggests female managers have a lower risk tolerance than males. This leads to the observation that females tend to hold a higher total number of assets (stocks) and fewer assets in their top 10 holdings than do male managers. We then analyze performance within funds over time in order to evaluate the impact of changes in management’s gender composition on funds’ performance. We find some evidence …
