Supply Chain Management: Impact Of Customer Relationship Marketing On Performance Under Cooperation And Competition Strategies, Maria Eugenia Barua
Supply Chain Management: Impact Of Customer Relationship Marketing On Performance Under Cooperation And Competition Strategies, Maria Eugenia Barua
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The dissertation investigation proposes a modified supply chain management model that is grounded on marketing theory and the concept of production sharing. Specifically, the model challenges the traditional cooperation-conflict continuum of strategic marketing management with a new managerial approach based on a cooperation-competition continuum. I investigate the significance of the new model in explaining behaviors in the supply chain management and its performance. In addition, I investigate whether the proposed managerial continuum (cooperation-competition) is consistent with other behaviors including power, conflict, trust, and customer relationship marketing such that coordination and supply chain performance is enhanced.

Contested Real Estate Rezoning From A Game Theory And Stakeholder Analysis Perspective, Joseph M. Bradley, Patrick T. Hester
Contested Real Estate Rezoning From A Game Theory And Stakeholder Analysis Perspective, Joseph M. Bradley, Patrick T. Hester
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Real estate developers may apply to re-zone a parcel of land when their development plan does not conform to the original zoning, or when economic conditions change and they decide that they need to revise their plan to one that is non-conforming. When the revised plan conflicts with the vision or values of other stakeholders (e.g. neighbors, local government), the real estate developer enters a decision process with both risk and uncertainty, while at the same time the affected stakeholders are placed in the reciprocal decision process. This process resembles a game with repeated plays as the developer and stakeholders …
Essays On Fresh Vegetable Production And Marketing Practices, Michael Vassalos
Essays On Fresh Vegetable Production And Marketing Practices, Michael Vassalos
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
Commercial fresh vegetable production is one of the most rewarding and risky farming activities. The price and yield variations throughout the production year, the special characteristics of fresh vegetable produce (i.e. perishability), and the changing consumer demands are some of the factors contributing to the increased uncertainty faced by vegetable producers. This dissertation combined mathematical programming and econometric techniques to: 1) investigate the optimal production and marketing practices under different price distribution information scenarios, risk aversion levels and marketing outlets and 2) examine growers’ preferences as well the effect of risk aversion levels and growers’ risk perception on the choice …

Backpacking In The Digital Age: Ethnographic Perspectives From Latin America, Russell Edwards
Backpacking In The Digital Age: Ethnographic Perspectives From Latin America, Russell Edwards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My thesis ethnographically examines the changing nature of backpacking for Westerners in Latin America amid a proliferation of mobile computing and social networking. While anthropological and sociocultural research on tourism is extensive, the social scientific literature on backpacking has, thus far, been largely unconcerned with Western Hemisphere countries and the effects of digital technology on this mode of travel. Recent findings suggest, however, that backpacking has currently moved beyond its niche roots as a subculture of independent traveling into a full-fledged tourist industry. My thesis investigates the Latin American backpacking scene to better understand if this is a global trend. …

The Development Of An Eco-Gastronomic Tourism (Egt) Supply Chain-Analyzing Linkages Between Farmer, Restaurants, And Tourists In Aruba., Marcelino Kock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Purpose of this study is to holistically analyze existing linkages between Aruba’s tourism industry, restaurants and local farmers, by examining strategies that constrain the development of linkages between these stakeholders. Previous research indicated that tourism development is often accompanied with increased demand for imported food, which results in foreign exchange leakages, inflation and competition with local production. This phenomenon is very common in the Caribbean, where Aruba, with its heavy reliance on imported goods and services, is no exception to this occurrence. To comprehend potential problems associated with linking both sectors, these in-depth case study addresses three fundamental questions: a) …

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to analyze guest/customer satisfaction surveys of a casual dining restaurant in the Orlando, Florida area; specifically, to analyze if there is a difference between satisfaction levels of tourist and non-tourist guests. The guest satisfaction surveys were analyzed on eight dimensions of satisfaction; Pace of Service, Service Overall, Server Communication & Accuracy, Food (Taste & Quality), Food Preparation, Bar (Beer, Wine, & Cocktail), Gratefulness, and Atmosphere in whole (including atmosphere and cleanliness). The eight dimensions were evaluated in the GPS (guest pulse survey) based on a Net Promoter Score, or NPS® system, and were …
Gender Dynamics From The Arab World: An Intercultural Service Encounter, Marryam Khan
Gender Dynamics From The Arab World: An Intercultural Service Encounter, Marryam Khan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Arab countries strive toward the modernization and feminization of the Arab culture; however, some of these countries (i.e., Saudi Arabia) are culturally and legally governed by "sharia law", and have maintained cultural norms regarding segregation of the sexes. In order to have a better understanding of the Arab travelers to the U.S., this research focuses on the gender dynamics between the service providers and Arab customers during a service encounter. Specifically, this research examines how the same and opposite genders of service-provider and customer influence Arab customers’ emotional response (comfort), consequently their service encounter evaluation (satisfaction), and behavioral intentions (feedback …
Knowledge Management: Style, Structure, And The Latent Potential Of Documented Knowledge, Sean Mcmahon
Knowledge Management: Style, Structure, And The Latent Potential Of Documented Knowledge, Sean Mcmahon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the volume, growth, and accessibility of documented knowledge – the insights and experiences stored on paper and in electronic form - management research has yet to demonstrate the same usefulness for documented knowledge as that found in knowledge residing in human sources. This dissertation explores two areas of potential for documented knowledge, suggesting the efficacy of a piece of documented knowledge is contingent not only on content, but upon the style and structure associated with that content. Style, how cognitively 'concrete' and affectively 'memorable' documented knowledge is perceived to be, is hypothesized to affect how much attention it draws …

The study of the service offered in 2010 by Unyson Logistics was consolidated within one customer survey as a need to promote organizational success by reaching customer satisfaction. The interest in satisfaction is due to the several advantages and benefits that offer the philosophy of excellence, among other things, increase the number of loyal customers, increasing the attraction of new clients, new opportunities to help development, improve the policy of reducing costs and optimize the company's image, and reach a higher level of satisfaction regarding the overall experience. This research will determine the main factors that will help Unyson Logistics …
The Effect Of Price Changes Of Natural Gas And Coal On S&P 500 Index, Mehman Sadigov
The Effect Of Price Changes Of Natural Gas And Coal On S&P 500 Index, Mehman Sadigov
Theses
Natural gas and coal are important energy sources in the United States. Both energy sources are substantially used in heavy industry, daily activities, and other areas of consumption. However, no significant research has been done to investigate the impact of changes in coal and gas prices on the stock market. Using multiple regression this research finds that inflation unadjusted and inflation adjusted coal price changes are statistically significant in predicting S&P 500 index changes. Results for inflation unadjusted and inflation adjusted natural gas price changes showed that gas price changes are statistically insignificant in predicting S&P 500 index changes in …
The Effect Of Long-Term Capital Gains And Dividend Tax Rate On The Performance Of Market Indexes Based On Market Capitalization, Jason Wheaton
The Effect Of Long-Term Capital Gains And Dividend Tax Rate On The Performance Of Market Indexes Based On Market Capitalization, Jason Wheaton
Theses
Through recent political history there is a common theme about taxes that is presented often: That small businesses are affected differently than larger companies. Though in political parlance small business is different than a small cap company, studying the effects of taxes on small cap companies can help discern if taxation does affect companies differently based on size. The study of the literature provides a background of critical elements such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), interest rates and inflation, as well as factors such as fiscal policy and informational uncertainty that have an effect on stock prices. Through regression analysis …
Online Book-Buying Behavior, Carolina Ziegler
Online Book-Buying Behavior, Carolina Ziegler
Theses
Generally speaking, the Internet is directly influencing the buying decision-making process of the consumer. More than ask relatives and friends' opinions, current customers tend now to acquire information about products on search engines, social networks, blogs, or websites. Therefore, this research was set to develop a better overall understanding about online buying behavior.
The e-commerce is growing every year and the number of consumers willing to spend money on virtual transactions follows this tendency. In order to better understand this trend, the market for academic books was chosen as a reference to appreciate how consumers behave when buying a specific …
Independent Directors And Shared Board Control In Venture Finance, Brian J. Broughman
Independent Directors And Shared Board Control In Venture Finance, Brian J. Broughman
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In most VC-backed firms neither the entrepreneurs nor the VC investors control the board. Instead control is typically shared with a mutually appointed independent director holding the tie-breaking seat. Contract theory, which treats control as an indivisible right held by one party, does not have a good explanation for this practice. Using a bargaining game similar to final offer arbitration, I show that an independent director as tie-breaker can reduce holdup by moderating each party’s ex post threat position, potentially expanding the range of firms which receive external financing. This project contributes to the literature on incomplete contracting and holdup, …

Industry reports that benefits of PLM are difficult to assess because the same benefit can be expressed as a function of time, cost, quality, or any combination. Based on a review of the PLM literature in an earlier study, a PLM Process Model and an initial list of PLM related metrics was generated and later confirmed through interviews with experienced PLM users. In the current study, the original PLM Process Model was refined and the list of metrics was subjected to an exploratory factor analysis in which specific metrics were found to be related to one of four factors: Inputs, …

Social science researchers (e.g., psychology, marketing) have questioned the practice of using undergraduates (UGs) as research participants; by the end of the 20th century, the use of UGs in consumer behavior research was trending upward. Peterson (2001, p. 451) reported that for the Journal of Consumer Research, “the percentage using college students has steadily increased, from 23% in the first volume to 89% in the most recent volume.” Further, he noted that “86% of the empirically based articles appearing in the Journal of Consumer Psychology since its inception in 1992 have employed college students as subjects” (p. 451). Similar figures …

Factors Associated With Preferences Regarding Selected Forms Of Variable Pay: A Replication And Extension, Timothy J. Keaveny, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Edward J. Inderrieden
Management Faculty Research and Publications
This study investigates the relationships among being paid via different variable pay systems, perceptions regarding selected work environment characteristics, and preferences regarding selected variable pay plans. The data highlight the importance of studying pay system preferences among those with significant work experience because measurement of such variables as experience with variable pay systems and perceptions of work environment characteristics is otherwise not possible. The findings suggest a link between perceptions of work autonomy, efficient management of firm resources and job support, pay satisfaction, experience with variable pay systems and preferences regarding selected variable pay systems.

Dozens of peer-reviewed, English language journals are currently published in our field. How ought we to evaluate them? This paper seeks to answer this question. To do so, we utilize both relevant literature and data on Entrepreneurship journals. The literature derives from both information science and other research areas that reflect on their journals. The data derives from six citation measures from Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. We find 59 currently published English language, peer reviewed journals in Entrepreneurship. Contestable judgments based on their impact measures suggest that one of these 59 could be considered as “A+, four …

Brett Beach and Tim McCollum, co-founders of Madécasse, spent two years as Peace Corps volunteers in Madagascar. During that time, they fell in love with the country and its people. Recognizing the need of the Malagasy for stable jobs and fair wages and the connection between poverty and environmental destruction, Brett and Tim discussed possibilities for a social enterprise in the country.
Madagascar presents a beautiful yet challenging place to operate a business. It has a wide range of flora and fauna, approximately 70% of which are found nowhere else on Earth and it produces coffee, vanilla, sugar, cotton, pepper, …
Exploring The Development Chain – An Inquiry Into The Linkages Between New Product Development And Supply Chain Management, Dirk J. Primus
Exploring The Development Chain – An Inquiry Into The Linkages Between New Product Development And Supply Chain Management, Dirk J. Primus
2013
This dissertation conducts an inquiry into the linkages between new product development and supply chain management. Simchi Levi, Simchi-Levi and Kaminsky (2008) coined the term "Development Chain" for the area where product development and the supply chain intersect. The first chapter of this research (Chapter 2) contributes to a more thorough understanding of the Development Chain (DC) and its impact on financial success with new products. We expand the term Development Chain and provide precise definitions for its scope and its activities. We develop a conceptual view of the DC at the single product/project level which can be understood and …
Ties That Bind: A Network Perspective On University Spinouts, Patrick Mchugh
Ties That Bind: A Network Perspective On University Spinouts, Patrick Mchugh
2013
Research universities execute technology transfer initiatives to transition university inventions to marketplace innovations. This process requires ties to bridge the gap between two disparate networks: a university's research community and a licensing corporate entity. One type of licensing corporate entity, and the focus of this research, is a newly formed university spinout. Utilizing a network lens, this study focuses on the ties between university inventors and spinout licensees and on the impact of various inter-organizational relationships on a spinout's success. This thesis investigates the following research questions: 1. How, if at all, does variation in the nature of the tie …

2013
This dissertation consists of two empirical studies that investigate fair value measurement issues currently facing the accounting profession--one from the perspective of the auditor, and the other from the perspective of the financial statement user. The results of each study are described below.
This first study examines experienced auditors' descriptions of specific client experiences in which auditing fair value measurements (FVMs) was particularly challenging. Based on a field survey of high-level engagement team personnel from several large firms, we identify a number of key issues currently facing the profession in auditing FVMs. First, when asked about challenges faced in auditing …

Changes In Auditing: A Three Part Investigation, Denise R. Hanes
2013
This dissertation consists of three studies investigating changes in auditing. This abstract summarizes each study, including purpose, methodology, and findings.
The first study synthesizes the extant literature examining geographically distributed work arrangements in other disciplines such as management and social psychology. Focusing on communication and coordination, knowledge sharing, work design, and social identity in geographically distributed teams, I identify opportunities for future research to expand our understanding of how geographically distributing audit work impacts auditors, the audit process, and audit quality.
My second paper explores a key contributor to the success of geographically distributed work highlighted in my literature review: …

User Resistance And Trust In A Clinical Rfid Employee Location Tracking Information System, Wilson Wong
2013
User resistance has been identified as a factor in information systems implementation failures in the health care industry. RFID, radio frequency identification, is being incorporated into new health care information systems in order to effect cost reductions by tracking, identifying and monitoring individuals and medical items. This is the first study to research the relative contributions of vendor trust and IT artifact trust components to user resistance and, as a result, makes a unique contribution to the information systems literature. An understanding of the degree to which technology adoption behavioral beliefs, and particularly system trust, affect user resistance towards information …
