Digital Word-Of-Mouth And The Gender Implications, Deborah H. Lester, Andrew M. Forman, Dolly D. Loyd, Tyra A. Burton

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Consumers can now easily access data and exchange sentiments regarding products and services on an unprecedented scale, and often in real time, through digital connections. The Internet and mobile technologies have made sharing of information and opinions among consumers easier than ever. The capacity of online participants to inspire and transform perspectives has been touted to surpass the radical potency of television when it entered the consumer’s province during the 50’s. Men and women use social media sites to learn about new products, to become smarter shoppers and to feel good about a purchase they might have already made. College …

Putting On A Happy Face: How Emotional Labor Impacts Frontline Service Employees, Anita H. Whiting Jan 2013

Putting On A Happy Face: How Emotional Labor Impacts Frontline Service Employees, Anita H. Whiting

AMTP Proceedings 2013

This study investigates emotional labor and its impact on frontline service employees (FSE). Emotional labor is defined as the stress of regulating one’s emotional displays in response to display rules (Diefendorff and Gosserand 2003). FSE experience emotional labor as they regulate their inner or felt emotions in order to display the appropriate emotions to the customer. Displaying appropriate emotions to customers is very important to service organizations because it affects customer affect and evaluation of service quality (Pugh 2001). Unlike previous research which focuses mostly on the customer’s experience during a service encounter, this paper focuses on FSE and their …

Attitude Versus Involvement: Predicting Ethically And Socially Responsible Consumption Behavior, Sacha Joseph-Mathews, Nicole Bieak-Kreidler Jan 2013

Attitude Versus Involvement: Predicting Ethically And Socially Responsible Consumption Behavior, Sacha Joseph-Mathews, Nicole Bieak-Kreidler

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Critics argue that the value gap (difference between what consumers say they care about and what they actually choose to purchase) suggests that ethical consumption is not as important as consumers imply. There is much talk about the ethical consumer “myth’ as consumers often claim to be interested in purchasing ethically and socially responsible products yet sales figures for green products often do not exceed 5% total product sales in any one category with organic fruits and vegetables being the one exception. Traditional models use consumer attitudes to the environment as a predictor of ethically and socially responsible consumption behavior …

Attributes, Ethical Attitudes And Behaviors Of Tax Evaders In A Permissive Collection Society, Yusuf M. Sidani, Abdul Jalil Ghanem, Mohammed Y. A. Rawwas

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Tax evasion remains a fascinating research topic, as it is more often committed by individuals considered by society to be “ethical.” The purpose of this study is to explore the various attitudes of tax evaders and examine them in relation to their personal moral philosophies. The results of the current study found that tax evaders possessed several attributes, and their personal moral philosophy attitudes (idealism or relativism) influenced their ethical behavior. Idealism was found to be negatively associated with self-interest tax evasion behavior while relativism had the opposite effect. Idealism was also found to be positively related to tax evasion …

Gerald Sandusky And Penn State Child Sex-Abuse Scandal: A Case Of Administrative Non-Action Leading To A Severe Crisis., Ania Izabela Rynarzewska

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Penn State/Sandusky scandal was one of the most controversial and publicized cases of 2011 and 2012. A high profile university football coach sexually abused 10 boys over period of 16 years. A problematic part of this case is that the university administration knew about coach’s behavior but did nothing to stop it. Sandusky was sexually abusing minors predominantly on the premises of The Penn State University over a period of 16 years. On June 22, 2012 Sandusky was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts of sex abuse of 10 boys while on October 9 he was sentenced to 30-60 …

An Examination Of British Charity Shop Shoppers, Robert Montgomery, Ariana Murray Jan 2013

An Examination Of British Charity Shop Shoppers, Robert Montgomery, Ariana Murray

AMTP Proceedings 2013

An increasing number of nonprofit organizations are developing charity shops to raise resources to support their charitable efforts. The United Kingdom currently has 9000 charity shops that take in annual revenues of 300 million British Pounds. Such stores seek donated merchandise . . . sell it . . . and use the proceeds to support philanthropic endeavors. As such, achieving a better understanding of charity shop shoppers can enhance performance of the charity shop which will, in turn, provide greater resources for helping others. The purpose of this study is to examine the processes by which charity shop shoppers: (1) …

Transforming The Simple Moving Average Forecasting Technique Into A Judgmental Bootstrapping Approach, Usama A. Saleh, Gamal Haikal Jan 2013

Transforming The Simple Moving Average Forecasting Technique Into A Judgmental Bootstrapping Approach, Usama A. Saleh, Gamal Haikal

AMTP Proceedings 2013

The simple moving average forecasting technique (SMAFT) uses a naïve arithmetic measurement for smoothing time-series data for various situations purposes, such as sales prediction. This paper attempts to rectify the contextual procedure of SMAFT by transforming the method into a judgmental bootstrapping approach, combining the statistical techniques of the X - chart (x-bar) and the Hurwicz's Criterion. The proposed modeling approach generates a dual forecasting value, presented by the grand mean, x , of the x-bar chart and the expected weighted payoff of the Hurwicz's Criterion, which is used to improve the accuracy of the final forecast. This model will …

Delivering Quality Customer Service: The Interactive Effects Of Employee Job Resourcefulness And Organizational Support, Shawn F. Clouse, Simona Stan, Nader H. Shooshtari Jan 2013

Delivering Quality Customer Service: The Interactive Effects Of Employee Job Resourcefulness And Organizational Support, Shawn F. Clouse, Simona Stan, Nader H. Shooshtari

AMTP Proceedings 2013

While front line customer service employees’ motivation and ability to provide high quality customer service is paramount for firm performance, it is unclear how employees’ internal resources may interact with organizational support. This paper advances a theoretical model for the possible interactive effects between customer service employees’ job resourcefulness and the external resource support provided by the organization, in the form of formal training, informal coaching, and rewarding mechanism, in determining the employees’ levels of commitment to customer service quality and the development of customer service skill proficiency. An exploratory study conducted on a sample of 98 student employees at …

Is Fantasy Football’S Popularity Decreasing Fan Attendance? : A Social Identity Perspective, Stefan Sleep Jan 2013

Is Fantasy Football’S Popularity Decreasing Fan Attendance? : A Social Identity Perspective, Stefan Sleep

AMTP Proceedings 2013

When most people think of football they think of specific teams and the fans associated with the team. Fans close identification with their team has made the National Football League (NFL), the most popular sports league in the United States. However, the NFL faces an interesting dilemma as fans are becoming more involved with league oriented activities, such as fantasy football, versus team specific activities which causes a dichotomy in league growth. Growth is increasingly being driven by league level activities, such as television and fantasy sports, while the core component of team revenues, game attendance, decreased from 2007 to …

An Examination Of The Segmentation Typologies Articulated In The Spectator And Participation Sports Marketing Literature, Sam Fullerton, Tammy Mccullough, Carol L. Bruneau Jan 2013

An Examination Of The Segmentation Typologies Articulated In The Spectator And Participation Sports Marketing Literature, Sam Fullerton, Tammy Mccullough, Carol L. Bruneau

AMTP Proceedings 2013

With the emergence of sports marketing as an important business discipline, a number of segmentation studies have focused on either the spectator sports market or the participation sports market. Regarding spectator sports, most of the previous studies have focused on individual sports entities such as a team, a league, a sport, or an event. The majority of the segmentation studies on participation sports have also assumed a narrow perspective by developing typologies for a specific activity such as golf. The current research assesses the efforts designed to segment the aggregate spectator sports market irrespective of the sport being watched and …

Using Exploratory Factor Analysis To Identify Star Players’ Effects On The Branding Process Of Professional Sports Teams, N. David Pifer, Jennifer Y. Mak, Won-Yul Bae, Jarrod Schenewark Jan 2013

Using Exploratory Factor Analysis To Identify Star Players’ Effects On The Branding Process Of Professional Sports Teams, N. David Pifer, Jennifer Y. Mak, Won-Yul Bae, Jarrod Schenewark

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Given the extremely competitive nature of professional sports and the high levels of risk associated with exorbitant player salaries, it is important for management to examine the specific effects that star players can have on a sport franchise’s brand. Gladden and Milne (1999) provided an early framework for examining the relationship between marquee athletes and a team’s brand by developing a model to assess brand equity in professional sport. This model, based largely on previous work by Aaker (1991), listed the star player as a product-related antecedent capable of generating brand equity that could bring about national media exposure, merchandise …

Innovation And Entrepreneurial Ventures In Sport: Branding Athletes Through Use Of New Media And Technology, Khalid Ballouli, John Grady, Brandon Brown

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Due to the growing capacity of modern technology to build brands through digital integration and social media networking, athletes have begun to create their own digital presence in efforts to reach a wider target audience. As such, entrepreneurs who develop integrated networks of traditional marketing and social media strategies—designed to increase brand influence in the digital space—are beginning to develop ways in which to capitalize on the monetization of the digital athlete brand. Digital athlete branding involves creating a digital presence for the professional athlete through the development of personal websites, social networks, and new media to provide unique fan …

Influence Of Social Motivations On Spectator Consumption Behavior Of A Formula One Grand Prix Event, Kevin K. Byon, Suk-Kyu Kim, Jae-Gu Yu, James J. Zhang, Chong Kim

AMTP Proceedings 2013

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between spectator motivation and sport consumption behavior in the context of F-1 events. Respondents were spectators from three Formula One (F-1) races held in Shanghai, China. Through a structural equation modeling analysis, Achievement Seeking and Salubrious Effects were found to be related to repurchase intentions. Three motivating factors (i.e., Achievement Seeking, Entertainment, and Catharsis) were also found to be associated with Word-of-Mouth intentions concerning F-1 events.

Awareness And Usage Of Collaboration And Communication Technologies In Student Teamwork, Manouchehr Tabatabaei, Marco Lam Jan 2013

Awareness And Usage Of Collaboration And Communication Technologies In Student Teamwork, Manouchehr Tabatabaei, Marco Lam

Information Systems & Analytics: Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigate students’ awareness and usage of collaboration and communication technologies (CCTs). Coordination and communication are two of the key processes for effective teamwork that have been identified in the literature. We find significant differences in awareness of CCTs between various student groups. However, when controlling for awareness, we find no difference in usage. While the proportion of students that are aware of various CCTs is high, the reported usage of CCTs is low. Because of the increased emphasis on teamwork, students need to be taught the technologies they need to use for collaboration and communication in …

A More Realistic Approach To Directors' Duties, Michelle M. Harner Jan 2013

A More Realistic Approach To Directors' Duties, Michelle M. Harner

Faculty Scholarship

Expectations for what fiduciary duties can achieve in the corporate context are unrealistic. This segment of the law—and the alleged deficiencies therein—are blamed for corporate scandals, securities fraud, failed business plans, and even a company's insolvency. Risk is, however, inherent in business, and human beings are flawed. Fiduciary duty law cannot change these basic facts. To the extent we think it can, we will continue to be disappointed and frustrated. This essay considers recasting (and to a greater extent codifying) directors’ duties in a positive frame to help foster better director oversight. It does not suggest that codifying greater clarity …

Taking Nonprofits At Their Word: The Role Of Conflict Over Mission In Organizational Change And Response To Environmental Pressures, David Gregory Berlan Jan 2013

Taking Nonprofits At Their Word: The Role Of Conflict Over Mission In Organizational Change And Response To Environmental Pressures, David Gregory Berlan

Public Administration - Dissertations

Central to any nonprofit is a mission; a defining purpose and set of values that provide its exempt purpose, differentiate it and motivate action by the organization and others on its behalf. Even the most formal and established mission is subject to redefinition, interpretation and different ideas over achieving it. This dissertation addresses the question of what role these interpretations of mission play in the processes by which nonprofits change, not just mission but also leadership, strategy and structure. Two distinct theoretical models are examined for fit with empirical results: (1) change processes as a response to external pressure moderated …

Modelling Engineering Change Management In A New Product Development Supply Chain, Krishna R. Reddi, Young B. Moon Jan 2013

Modelling Engineering Change Management In A New Product Development Supply Chain, Krishna R. Reddi, Young B. Moon

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship

The changes within a new product development (NPD) process are handled differently depending on the stage of the project. The changes during the initial stages of the project are addressed by design iterations, while the changes after the product design is complete are addressed using a formal engineering change management (ECM) process. The ECM process is a complex process, especially under a collaborative environment, where various independent entities work together for a common cause of product development. The interactions between the NPD and ECM processes have rarely been investigated in the research community. In this paper, we attempt to study …

Income Classification Shifting And Financial Analysts’ Forecasts, Shanshan Pan Jan 2013

Income Classification Shifting And Financial Analysts’ Forecasts, Shanshan Pan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Income classification shifting involves opportunistically misclassifying core expenses into nonrecurring items in order to boost core earnings. Recent studies have documented large sample evidence of its existence (e.g. McVay 2006; Fan et al.,2010; Barua et al.,2010). Managers engage in income classification shifting because they believe the market in general and financial analysts in particular focus on core earnings. If financial analysts are experts in forecasting permanent earnings, they should be expected to identify reported core earnings that have been inflated through classification shifting and revise their future earnings forecast accordingly. Consistent with my prediction, I find that given the same …

Is More Information Always Better? Mandatory Disclosure Regulations In The Prescription Drug Market, Joanna Shepherd

Faculty Articles

This Article proceeds as follows. In Section I, I describe the structure of the PBM industry. I also describe the business model PBMs employ to administer prescription drug coverage and the methods they use to reduce prescription drug spending. In Section II, I discuss mandatory disclosure regulations enacted in several states and at the federal level under the Affordable Care Act. In Section III, I explain why mandatory disclosure regulations are not needed to ensure that health plan sponsors pay a competitive price for PBM services. In Section IV, I discuss the various costs that mandatory disclosure regulations will impose …

Efficient Copyright Infringement, David Fagundes Jan 2013

Efficient Copyright Infringement, David Fagundes

Faculty Articles

Copyright infringement is said to be socially costly because it robs owners of due recompense and depresses incentives for creative production. This Article contends that, in order to achieve copyrights goal of maximizing cultural production, this dominant story of infringement's costs requires alongside it a counter-story identifying the rare but important instances where copyright infringement enhances social welfare. Part I explains the need for an account of the notion of efficient copyright infringement. Other types of unlawful conduct may also be beneficial, but copyright in particular warrants exploration of efficient infringement because maximizing creative production requires some level of unauthorized …

League Structure & Stadium Rent Seeking - The Role Of Antitrust Revisited, David Haddock, Tonja Jacobi, Matthew Sag Jan 2013

League Structure & Stadium Rent Seeking - The Role Of Antitrust Revisited, David Haddock, Tonja Jacobi, Matthew Sag

Faculty Articles

Professional North American sporting teams receive enormous pub for new and renovated stadiums after threatening to depart their hometowns, or by actually moving elsewhere. In contrast, English sporting teams neither receive much public money for such projects, nor move towns. This Article argues that no inherent cultural or political transatlantic variations cause the differences; rather, it is the industrial organization of sports in the two countries-the structure of league control-that enables rent-seeking by American teams but not by their English counterparts. Cross-country time series data contrasting American professional football and baseball stadiums with English soccer grounds support our claim, as …

Purpose: This paper presents empirical evidence for the use of narrative to deliver bad news within an organization, specifically bad news about layoffs. The attempt is to extend previous empirical work, using narrative by senior leadership to convey corporate strategy, to a different leadership challenge and further explicate a model for understanding the effectiveness of narrative as a leadership communication tool. Design/Methodology/Approach: The paper presents further original research on the effectiveness of narrative as a leadership tool. And theoretical implications for leaders seeking effective communication tools are explored. Findings: Data presented to substantiate that narrative use, as opposed to a …

Corporate Revenue Miscalculations & The Impact On Stakeholders, Karen Cascini, Alan Delfavero, Ryan Bezner Jan 2013

Corporate Revenue Miscalculations & The Impact On Stakeholders, Karen Cascini, Alan Delfavero, Ryan Bezner

WCBT Faculty Publications

Corporate earnings restatements are regarded as one of the most significant issues in accounting today. While there are various factors that can influence corporate earnings, revenue is the key contributor to a business’ net income. During the 2000s, a multitude of domestic and multinational corporations faced significant issues with their revenue recognition practices. Although the investing public might regard any revenue restatement as laden with possible fraud, this is not always the case. Multinational firms face dual accounting systems, such as U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Consequently, similarities and differences among accounting systems, …

Teaching Note On The Treatment Of Noncontrolling Interests In Financial Analysis, Cost Of Capital And Valuation: A Case Study Of Verizon Communications, Bridget Lyons Jan 2013

Teaching Note On The Treatment Of Noncontrolling Interests In Financial Analysis, Cost Of Capital And Valuation: A Case Study Of Verizon Communications, Bridget Lyons

WCBT Faculty Publications

A noncontrolling interest (NCI) arises when a firm fully consolidates subsidiaries that are not wholly owned by the parent. The existence of a noncontrolling interest complicates financial analysis and valuation. Failure to appropriately consider the NCI may lead to errors in equity valuation and share price since the NCI impacts equity value and implied share price of the parent firm. Return on equity calculations must be carefully constructed as there are several net income and equity values reported. Finally, the NCI can impact the weighted average cost of capital. Verizon Communications was selected as a case study based on the …
