Given that leadership is value-based and relationship-permeated, one asks how leaders can transfer personal and organizational value to employees. One answer to this is through mentoring. Mentoring young or inexperienced workers is an investment in the future of business, the school system, organizations, etc. Understanding this idea is difficult because current mentoring research demonstrates that mentoring is more convoluted than was once thought. This article will make an effort to untangle some of this research and then suggest a “common sense” and “practical” definition of “mentoring.” This is a definition that can be used in large and small businesses, in …

According to recent Pew research, ten thousand Baby Boomers reach age 65 every day in the United States and the pace will continue for the next 18 years; similar numbers are also reported for Canada and Europe. The effect on the workforce will be dramatic, perhaps even more dramatic than the effect they had when they arrived on the scene six decades ago. Thus, it falls not to Generation-X, as this generational cohort is too small to make a significant impact, rather the task shifts to the Millennials. Ethical Leadership In Kazakhstan: An Exploratory Study, A. Michael Conrad

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This study measured ethical leadership perceptions utilizing a new corporate culture scale in a Central Asian country. Ethical leadership ratings from 103 Kazakhstani employees were used to determine how they perceived their managers in terms of being moral people and moral managers. Results indicate that managers are perceived as relatively weaker moral managers as compared to moral persons. Holding employees accountable for their actions is the lowest rated aspect of the moral manager. Definitions of moral persons and moral managers in Kazakhstan vary somewhat from an American culture-oriented ethical leadership model. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

The effort to develop methods for assessing animal welfare at farm level has grown dramatically since the end of the 1990s, culminating in the protocols developed by the European-wide project Welfare Quality® (WQ). However, these protocols are time consuming and lack transparency in how scores are aggregated into welfare outcomes. The current study investigates the potential of Qualitative Behavior Assessment (QBA), a much less time-consuming approach, to be used as a stand-alone integrative screening tool for identifying farms with compromised welfare before applying the full WQ protocol. QBA is a ‘whole-animal’ approach asking human observers to summarize animals’ expressive demeanor …

Utah leaders created a big goal: 66% of Utah’s population will have postsecondary degrees or vocational certificates by the year 2020. This goal is based on a report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce that projected Utah’s economy will need 66% of its population with some form of postsecondary education by 2018 to remain competitive. Currently, 38.3% of Utahns hold associate degrees or higher. This baseline underscores the urgency of working toward the 66% goal. Figure 1 highlights the current gap in educational attainment.

This is the second in the 2013 series of Utah Women and Education Initiative (UWEI) Research and Policy Briefs written to help state leaders, educators, legislators, and community members understand the current state of higher education for women in Utah. The first brief on education attainment of the Utah population included information about Utah’s big goal of having 66% of Utah’s population with postsecondary degrees or vocational certificates by the year 2020. The purpose of this second brief is to highlight the current enrollment and graduation data of women and men attending postsecondary institutions in Utah.

The logic of caritas transforms conventional concepts of economic efficiency in a direction conducive to the health and sustainability of a market system, by distinguishing between economic activities which are additive or extractive toward the common good. The beneficent power of the market to serve human flourishing is based not in a morally tacit concept of economic efficiency as a cardinal good, but rather in a gift-bearing efficiency aligned with caritas. This thesis is explored through three business case studies: (1) patents related to pharmaceutical drug design and marketing; (2) “monetization” strategies in recent internet-based business models; and (3) …

R-squared is the correlation (i.e., r) of a fund to its benchmark index multiplied by itself (i.e., squared). R-squared measures how closely a fund tracks its respective index. A recent article (see here, Wall Street Journal) suggests that investors should search for actively managed funds with low R-squareds, as this suggests the manager is truly trying to add value by concentrating on specific sectors of the benchmark universe. However, doing so increases systematic risk. So, there is a tradeoff.

This study examined whether observers could distinguish between cattle that were exposed to various road transport conditions: Experiment 1 compared a manipulated flooring treatment (non-grip flooring, NG) with a control transport event (grip flooring, G) and Experiment 2 compared a manipulated driving style (stop-start driving, SS) with a control transport event of smooth, continuous (C) driving. The behavioural expression of cattle was assessed through the process of Qualitative Behavioural Assessment (QBA), and these assessments were tested for correlation with various physiological parameters. Beta Alpha Psi members recently conducted a highly successful service event for 82 Boy Scouts and their scout masters educating them about careers in accounting as well as taking them through the steps toward earning their personal management merit badge, one of the merit badges that is required to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout. This particular merit badge is one of the more difficult merit badges to earn because it requires budgeting and tracking personal income and expenditures.

Corporate environmental responsibility and sustainability have become mainstream. Coca-Cola has been working on alleviating global water scarcity, given that water is the primary ingredient of soft drinks and critical to Coca-Cola’s future. Facebook has made public its “carbon footprint” emitted from its data centers for 2011 (equivalent to 285,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide), declaring that it aims to reduce it by 25% via clean energy by 2015. And Wal-Mart has erected its first commercial-scale wind turbine at its Red Bluff, Calif., distribution center to supply 15 to 20% of the facility’s electricity needs at a substantial cost savings over …

People's just world beliefs are related to how they feel and behave towards others: the stronger people hold beliefs that the world treats them fairly, the more they feel and act pro-socially towards others. It is conceivable, therefore, that pro-social feelings and behaviours towards others can strengthen people's personal belief in a just world, especially when people expect these positive feelings to be returned. Because mimicry enhances pro-social feelings towards others, we argue that mimicry may strengthen peoples’ personal just world beliefs via positive feelings for the mimicked person and the expectation that these positive feelings are returned. Intellectual Capital Disclosure And The Ipo Prospectus: An Exploratory Study, Keith Harman

ICD (Intellectual Capital Disclosure) was studied via content analysis of IPO (Initial Public Offering) filings by retailers versus software companies. Data were obtained from 106 firms’ SEC S-1 filings between 2001 and 2011. Key findings were: (1) ICD increased over time, (2) significant differences in the type of IC disclosed, (3) Structural Capital was the type of IC most frequently disclosed, (4) consistency among firms regarding the frequency with which specific IC components (e.g. brands) were disclosed, and (5) no significant difference in ICD when comparing retailers and software companies.
