The purpose of this study was to examine the current undergraduate business ethics curriculum in AACSB-accredited business schools in the U.S. to determine what external and internal influences affected the curriculum, what academic plan elements and other environmental variables comprised the current business ethics curriculum, and what differences existed among the business ethics curriculum in programs based on institutional control, size, or approach to including business ethics in the undergraduate curriculum. A literature review in the areas of curriculum and curriculum design guided the conceptual framework for the study. A web-based survey was designed to collect quantitative and qualitative data …

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was designed to achieve nearly universal access to health coverage in the United States—in part by standardizing Medicaid eligibility across the country so that each state’s program would cover individuals with incomes below 138% of the federal poverty level (FPL), or $15,856 for an individual and $32,499 for a family of four in 2013 (see Figure 1).i However, in June 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court determined that states could not be required to broaden Medicaid and retained the decision as a state option. Emotional Labor: The Role Of Employee Acting Strategies On Customer Emotional Experience And Subsequent Buying Decisions, Chaoying Tang, Craig R. Seal, Stefanie E. Naumann, Krystal Miguel

Prior research has demonstrated the impact of employee emotional labor strategies (deep and surface acting) on customer behavioral intentions. However, there is limited data on the impact of emotional labor strategy on potential intervening variables and on actual buying decisions. This study extends the prior research by examining the effect of employee emotional labor strategies on customers’ emotional experiences and actual customer purchasing decisions. Data were collected from 294 employee-customer pairs from retail cell phone stores in China. Results indicated that choice of strategy (deep or surface) does significantly impact purchase decisions. Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 0.16% during Feburary 2013. The slight increase in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, suggests modest economic growth in Nebraska in the summer of 2013. Looking at individual components of the LEI-N, there was strong growth in business expectations during February. Respondents to the Survey of Nebraska Business reported expectations for a solid increase in business sales and employment over the next six month. However, all other components of the LEI-N declined during February, albeit only slightly. Specifically, single-family building permits dropped modestly …

Health care costs represent a large and growing component of business and consumer expenditures in the US. Medical inflation represents these costs, and it differs from aggregate inflation and other market factors with respect to its rate of growth, statistical properties and the extent to which it can be hedged by households and firms. Using multiple model specifications for the 25-year period from 1985 to 2009, we find medical inflation is robustly priced in the cross-section of US stock returns. It commands a risk premium of between 31 and 51 basis points per annum per unit change in beta. Medical …

Organizational Culture, Job Satisfaction And Turnover Intentions: The Mediating Role Of Perceived Organizational Support, David Emerson

This study investigates how the culture of an organization is related to the job satisfaction and turnover intentions of government accountants. I show that perceived organizational support serves as a mediator between organizational culture and both turnover intentions and job satisfaction. I evaluate how cultural effects have changed over time, and assess how the relations between the hypothesized associations differ between supervisory and staff accountants. I also look for differences in how accountants and primary care nurses may perceive organizational culture. Recently an email hit my desk from Paul Thomas in Australia with a proposal to work together on a “Cloud Curriculum for Art and Science”. I immediately agreed to collaborate. I don’t yet have a clue of what a cloud curriculum is, but what I do know is that we are ‘backing into the future’ in educational institutions and we desperately need a ‘cloud curriculum.’ We need to look over the ten year horizon. And in the emerging art-science field I doubt that the usual approach to curriculum development will work.

Sustainable Impact Investment Advisors, a professional association of investment advisors whose practices focus on sustainable and socially responsible investing, sponsored a panel conversation on hydraulic fracking. A panel of experts, including industry representatives and grass roots opponents, discussed the pros and cons of fracking. The panel provided an overview of fracking, and food for thought about whether you choose to include this industry in your investments, or influence companies to use this technology with only the utmost care.
