Heterodox Economics: The Alternative To Neoliberal Market-Fundametalist Economics, Tae-Hee Jo
Heterodox Economics: The Alternative To Neoliberal Market-Fundametalist Economics, Tae-Hee Jo
Neoliberalism Seminar
Mainstream-neoclassical economics is the theoretical foundation of neoliberal economic policy that promotes competition and commodification through markets. Increasing fragility of an economy, increasing income inequality, the scaled-back welfare system, and recurring financial crisis are prominent consequences of neoliberal restructuring of industries and the economy as a whole. Is the “law of supply and demand” the universal principle that governs all the economic activities under capitalism? Is there an alternative way of explaining and organizing the provisioning process of a capitalist economy? How can economics deal with such socio-economic problems beyond market-fundamentalist economic narratives? In my presentation, I will highlight heterodox …
Environmental Conflicts In The Neoliberal Era, Charalampos Kostantinidis
Environmental Conflicts In The Neoliberal Era, Charalampos Kostantinidis
Neoliberalism Seminar
Neoliberalism is characterized as a 35-year long period of attack of capital against labor in an attempt to restore falling profit rates. This has come at the expense of increased inequality and uncertainty, leading to a crisis of legitimacy for the neoliberal model of capitalism. Environmental issues offer both an opportunity for accumulation and profits, by extending the reach of the market into areas that were not previously incorporated into the circuits of capital, as well as a chance to restore some of the waning legitimacy of the neoliberal model, to the extent that environmental problems occupy a central position …

Creative Collaboration: Maximizing Resources For Multi-Collection Exhibits, Jillian M. Slater, Nichole M. Rustad
Marian Library Faculty Presentations
This presentation illustrates the collaborative, multi-format approach used in preparing an exhibit of archival materials on the 1913 Dayton flood at the University of Dayton Libraries. Originally formed due to the absence of a University Archivist, the small planning committee was able to combine areas of expertise including archives, history, graphic design, video/audio production, marketing, and digitization. The collaborative process facilitated a creative approach resulting in a unique, interactive exhibit utilizing audio, video, original materials, reproductions, a permanent digital component, and a discussion panel event. The presenters will also discuss how the planning committee maximized available resources (without a budget) …

Effects Of Changes In Temperature On Mechanical Behavior Of Bulk Metallic Glasses And Bmg Composites, Jessica A. Booth, S. Mohsen Seifi, John J. Lewandowski
Student Scholarship
Fracture and fracture toughness behavior of Zr-based metallic glass composites were investigated while varying test temperature. Samples were tested in tension and three-point bending to determine the effect of temperature change on the tensile strength, ductility, fracture toughness and fracture surface appearance. Significant effects of changes in the test temperature were observed. Fracture surface observations showed ductile and brittle features which were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques.

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
Complexity can be found in any type of organization or business. I always compare complexity to a living organism that grows and transforms through time. Organizations have to learn how to manage complexity in efficient ways, so as to ensure their portion in the market and to be competitive with other companies in the same industry. The only way that the companies can adapt to the constant shifting environment is to follow the growth of the living organism and grow with it. Leadership, on the other hand, …

Imagine being a tax payer whose hard earned tax dollars are supporting the construction of a multimillion dollar sports facility, under the impression that these dollars will supposedly benefit the local economy. Then, after a few years of the team's presence in the community, there is no major capital return after being told numerous times by local officials that there would be. On top of seeing no economic increase, all the employment opportunity that was also promised only appears to be minimal. Although the introduction of a …

Data Mining The Harness Track And Predicting Outcomes, Robert P. Schumaker
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper presented the S&C Racing system that uses Support Vector Regression (SVR) to predict harness race finishes and analyzed it on fifteen months of data from Northfield Park. We found that our system outperforms the most common betting strategies of wagering on the favorites and the mathematical arbitrage Dr. Z system in five of the seven wager types tested. This work would suggest that an informational inequality exists within the harness racing market that is not apparent to domain experts.

Creating Synergy, Mindae Kadous, Brianna Lipovsky
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.
From academia to corporations, the argument for revisiting synergy has been strengthened, making the term a common buzzword of the 21 '1 century (Liedtka 45). On the other hand, what is not so common is achieving this state of high performance. According to skeptic Harold Greneen, synergy is "a carcinogenic slice of baloney tliat serves no other purpose than to bring false hope to a capitalist America" (qtd. in Liedtka 45). However, at a time when there is an increase in business consolidations and complex technology, the …

Diversification In Hedge Fund Portfolios, Melvyn Teo
Diversification In Hedge Fund Portfolios, Melvyn Teo
Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre
We explore the diversification benefits of increasing the number of hedge funds in an investment portfolio. Conventional wisdom suggests that investors should construct a portfolio of 20 to 30 hedge funds in order to achieve a reasonably low portfolio variance. We show using Monte Carlo simulations that the marginal benefit of including an additional hedge fund in a fund portfolio diminishes significantly once the number of hedge funds increases beyond ten. Specifically, the annualized standard deviation of a fund portfolio diminishes from 16.55 percent to 7.40 percent as we increase the number of funds from one to ten. However, the …

Social media and fan behavior are two very interesting topics. More and more people are learning more about social media everyday and it is here to stay, it is not a fad, and people expect organization to be posting about games or events so that they can find out the information on social media. It is important for organizations to be on Twitter or Facebook because it is important to integrate into people’s lives. NCAA Division I basketball has grown to be an enourmously lucrative business venture in recent years. However, in order to capitalize on the revenues that can be generated by NCAA Division I basketball schools need to be successful. Therefore, it is important to address what can lead to success. Previously, it was thought that coaching status and skill were the key factors leading to success. However, research has been done to discover the relationship between recruiting and success in Division I Football, but very little research has been done on Division I Basketball. The purpose of this study is to …

Sport Management Undergraduate
In lieu of an abstract, here is the paper's first paragraph: One challenge many team’s in many different leagues face is the ability to recognize fan motives and fan attendance to their team’s games (Ouray 2006). Team owners struggle every year to find the best balance between winning games, winning championships, training players and hiring coach’s all on the base of making money. Teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) earn money through T.V contracts, licensed goods, and Ticket sales. Many different owners in different leagues have their own approaches and goals when the thought of raising attendance at games …

Division Iii Student-Athletes Perceptions Of Pay For Play, Daniel P. Maloney
Sport Management Undergraduate
Since the NCAA was first created, the subject of academic corruption in intercollegiate athletics has been of significant concern and empirical inquiry (Ridpath, 2008). There are many current issues that are still ongoing today such as: the denial of payment of Division I football players, the exploitation of student-athletes in academics, and the difference in treatment between student-athletes and students academically. Although this may not always hold true at all Division I schools, previous studies have concluded the values and missions of the NCAA seem to be misaligned with what they are actually promoting. I would like to prove that …
