The Influence Of Horizontal Equity, Self Efficacy, And Ethical Position On The Creation Of Budgetary Slack, Ira Abdullah Jun 2013

The Influence Of Horizontal Equity, Self Efficacy, And Ethical Position On The Creation Of Budgetary Slack, Ira Abdullah

Theses and Dissertations

The budgeting process plays an important role in organizations’ planning and controlling functions. Managers often have incentives to misreport their private information and inaccurately set budget targets so that they are easily achievable. Such inaccuracy in budget targets is referred to as budgetary slack. Prior research documents that managers’ decisions to create budgetary slack are influenced by both preferences for wealth and non-pecuniary motivations. The objective of this study is to provide a better understanding of how social preferences such as preferences for horizontal equity, self efficacy perceptions, and ethical position influence managers’ budgetary slack creation. The results reveal a …

The Contribution Of Family Leisure To Family Functioning And Family Satisfaction Among Urban Russian Families, Mikale N. Williamson Jun 2013

The Contribution Of Family Leisure To Family Functioning And Family Satisfaction Among Urban Russian Families, Mikale N. Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure involvement and family leisure satisfaction to aspects of family functioning and satisfaction with family life among urban Russian families. Specifically, this study examined how both family leisure involvement (core and balance) and family leisure satisfaction contributed to the explanation of variance in family functioning and satisfaction with family life. The behavioral factor of family alcohol consumption was also included in the analysis. Furthermore, because the data were nested in families, and because most family leisure research has been limited to individual-level analyses, this study accounted for family-level …

Impact Of Eu Crisis On Saarc Countries, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

It is a matter of honour and privilege for me to be invited to share my thoughts with this august gathering of SAARC Governors. I wish to thank the Governor State Bank of Pakistan Mr. Yasin Anwar for providing me this opportunity. I would like to begin by briefly tracing the origin of the crisis of 2008/09 and then presenting the evidence about the changing role of Emerging and Developing Economies (EDEs) in the aftermath of the crisis. I would then turn to the subset of SAARC countries and see as to how much they were affected by this crisis. …

Personality And Performance: An Examination Of Relationships Between Personality,Character Traits, And Performance Among Wilderness Field Guides, John David Bishoff

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between job performance of wilderness and adventure therapy (WAT) field guides and personality traits. Specifically, this study utilized the NEO-PI-R to assess personality and the Field Guide Performance Evaluation (FGPE) to assess job performance. Job performance was measured by managers, peers, and WAT participants. The sample consisted of 89 personality assessments, gathered from both the U.S. and Canada. Ordinary least squares regression analysis indicated there was a non-significant relationship between field guide job performance and personality. Findings provide implications for WAT practitioners seeking the most qualified field guides possible.

Pray For A Bear Market?, Steven D. Dolvin Jun 2013

Pray For A Bear Market?, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Most investors save for retirement using company sponsored 401(k) plans -- making investments into the account every month. This is a form of dollar cost averaging. For this type of investment, a bear market might be the best situation, as it will enable investors to buy more shares at lower prices. Since we want to "buy low and sell high," this downward volatility might actually help us. This is counter to what many people would think. See a related article here, Wall Street Journal.

Recruiting Internal Auditors: The Effects Of Using The Internal Audit Function As A Management Training Ground And Performing Consulting Services, Matthew Stripliper, Dr. David Wood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A critical component of high quality corporate governance is attracting well-qualified job candidates into the internal audit function (IAF). Yet, IAFs face significant challenges in hiring a sufficient number of qualified professionals to perform their worki. Given this challenge, it is important to understand factors that can affect the ability of the IAF to attract a large pool of talent2. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to investigate three specific questions: (1) To what extent are job applicants deterred by negative stereotypes of working in internal auditing?; (2) How do different job structure factors, namely using the …

The Impact Of Describing Products In Sensorial Ways On Variety- Seeking Behavior, Lidan Xu, Dr. Ryan Elder Jun 2013

The Impact Of Describing Products In Sensorial Ways On Variety- Seeking Behavior, Lidan Xu, Dr. Ryan Elder

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project is to examine how describing the sensory attributes (vs. non-sensory) of a product impacts variety-seeking behaviors of consumers. It is important to understand when and why consumers seek variety as companies seek to maintain customer loyalty. Prior studies have showed that variety seeking is increased within sensory domains, such as food (Inman, 2001). This current project seeks to understand variety-seeking behaviors within non-sensory product domain. Sensory characteristics lead to quicker satiety than non-sensory characteristics (Inman, 2001). Using the same product over and over again increases the desire for a change. This desire for change, and consequent variety seeking, …

Vocal Artifacts: A Video-Based Study Of The Appropriation And Articulation Of Material Objects Within Employment Interviews, Emily Warren, Dr. Lebaron Curtis

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of this project was to examine how material objects and texts (e.g., resumes, letters, application files, etc.) may be appropriated and articulated during employment interviews. While past research focused on the verbal and discursive features of employment interviews, using research methods such as content analysis, discourse analysis, and conversation analysis, this was a multimodal study that highlighted the pervasive but taken-for-granted material and embodied aspects of employment interviews that have been largely overlooked. Our research findings have contributed to the growing awareness and understanding of socio-materiality in organizations and organizational routines. This research was presented as the National …

The Effect Of Relational Self-Construal In Dispute Resolutions And Negotiations, Aubri Robinson, Dr. Sheli Sillito Jun 2013

The Effect Of Relational Self-Construal In Dispute Resolutions And Negotiations, Aubri Robinson, Dr. Sheli Sillito

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of our research project was to determine the influence of managerial fairness in the context of dispute resolution and negotiation. We aimed to identify whether managers’ relational self-construal (RSC), whether they define themselves in terms of their close relationships with others, leads to more positive outcomes in social contexts, including higher fairness ratings from subordinates and higher self-perceived fairness. Through our studies, we explored potential moderators (e.g., context) and mediators (e.g., affect) of the RSC-fairness relationship within organizations and manager-employee relationships. Our findings expected to inform research on negotiation improvement and organizational fairness. Through our study of negotiations …

The Dilemma Of Members Of Farmers’ Cooperatives After Liberalisation Of Domestic Coffee Marketing: The Case Of Moshi And Rombo Districts, Tanzania, David Gongwe Mhando Dgm, Shigela K. Ganja, Eliza Monyo

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The current economic and marketing reforms in Tanzania have not led to expected improvement in the productivity, incomes and overall livelihoods of coffee growers. Consequently, farmer’s cooperatives have been unable to satisfactorily provide the essential services to their members. This paper analyses the impact of market liberalisation to members of cooperatives. Data was collected by household surveys, FGD and interviews, whereby structured questionnaires and checklists were employed. The study found out that following market liberalisation, Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) are disorganised and lack strong management. There is no substantial welfare improvement to AMCOS members due to the unpredictable pricing …

Trade-Off Relationship Between The Hire Rates And Exercise Prices Of Purchase Options In Ship Charter Contracts: An Option Pricing Application, Cheng-Hung Arthur Hsieh, Heng-Chih Chou, Kuang Lin, David C Yen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Bareboat charters and ship leasing contracts with purchase options are important channels for ship owners and the operators obtaining their ships. This study develops an option pricing model to evaluate the trade-off relationship between the hire rates and the exercise prices of purchase options. Numerical analysis is conducted using four input variables namely the spot ship prices, the volatility of the spot ship prices, the time to maturity of the options and the discount rate. An actual example is also presented. The results show that as the exercise price decreases, it is very likely that this purchase option is exercised; …

The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein Jun 2013

The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

The words “knowledge” and “information” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the connection between them is complex and problematic. Knowledge is a mental product gained from engaging with information. All educational subjects, scholarly disciplines, occupations, and activities produce knowledge as well as information. Because libraries encompass potentially all subjects, professional vision in librarianship would benefit from an examination of knowledge that transcends the methods and topical concerns of individual disciplines. An interdisciplinary (or transdisciplinary) framework in which to view knowledge was pioneered in the post-Sputnik age by Fritz Machlup and Michael Polanyi. Their insights have stimulated scholars to develop research, publications, …

Professor William F. Shughart II, of the Huntsman School of Business, said the recently reported IRS action of auditing non-profit groups based on their political leanings is not new, but rather it is part of a historical pattern in which the federal agency’s practices have been influenced by political considerations.
