Why Microfinance? Why separate Microfinance Institution (MFIs) from other financial institutions? My answer is that Capital markets in developing countries are imperfect and poor are unable to access these markets. Thus to address this ‘market failure’ and provide avenue for low-income families to access financial service the MFIs have to be set up separately from commercial banks. There is a clear ‘public good’ element associated with Microfinance and hence the role of the Government intervention in this sector becomes justifiable compared to commercial banks where the Government is ought to be confined to regulator and supervisor only. This exploratory, empirical study reports on social capital in a commodity-based industry in an emerging market context. We examine whether Brazilian entrepreneurs and SMEs in the Stone industry experience contextual normative pressure sufficient to retard or promote the growth of social capital. Further we link social capital development to internationalization and performance. We find that there is a lack of social capital development and propose that this is related to the country context of Brazil and the stage of development along the industry value chain. Changing demographics and labour market structures are placing increased pressure on identifying work/life balance solutions, while global competition is forcing companies to look beyond traditional solutions to search for competitive advantage. Recent rapid technology developments facilitate a strategic application of teleworking, which, in suitable organisations, would appear to alleviate both of these issues. Despite this, the limited evidence that exists in the telework literature indicates a dearth of telework in Irish companies, and recent research on the reasons for this, form a gap in the literature.

Online learning activities have promised new ways to engage students. This paper describes the design and use of the NewsScripts online learning exercise over a decade. This web-based television news scriptwriting exercise is used with media students at the University of Cape Town to expose them to news scriptwriting practices. Students write a script to match a video, employing a television news writing style. The more important transformational opportunity is deepening students’ own critical media analysis skills. In the last decade, there has been a growth in Information Communication and Technology for Education (ICT4E) in sub-Saharan Africa. Through support from local and international development agencies, several Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have engaged in introducing, implementing and supporting ICT4E. This study aims at providing a description and analysis of the current state of ICT4E implementation in HEIs in Mozambique. An exploratory study of 19 HEIs was conducted using open ended questionnaires and interviews. This case study focuses on students’ acceptance of mobile phones for learning purposes within a project that aims to support and engage distance education students by using mobile phones for distance learning tutorials, rather than using technology merely to communicate information or create access to learning resources. The research design is based on Davis's Technology Acceptance Model and tests multiple hypotheses concerning the effects of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, interest in the technology and technology self-efficacy on the use of the mobile tutorials. This article presents the outcome of an investigation into the provision of lecturecasts to students. The objective was to ensure that both those who attended live lectures of a second-year engineering course and/or watched recorded versions of the lectures had an experience that supported their learning. A range of data was drawn on including the personal reflection of the lecturer of the course, questionnaires, and student interviews. Financial Literacy And Retirement Planning In Australia, Julie R. Agnew, Hazel Bateman, Susan Thorp

Numeracy

Financial literacy and numeracy are closely tied. Furthermore, financial literacy has been shown to relate to important financial behaviors. This study examines the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning using a measure that includes questions requiring numeracy. We implement a customized survey to a representative sample of 1,024 Australians. Overall, we find aggregate levels of financial literacy similar to comparable countries with the young, least educated, those not employed, and those not in the labor force most at risk. Our financial literacy measure is positively related to retirement planning in our sample.

The Performance Of Listed Hedge Fund Firms, Lin Sun, Melvyn Teo

We examine the impact of fund management company listing on hedge fund performance. We find that hedge funds managed by listed firms underperform those managed by unlisted firms by 1.89 per annum after adjusting for risk. Using an event study framework, we show that hedge fund performance deteriorates from 10.32 percent per year in the 36-month pre-listing window to 2.16 percent per year in the 36-month post-listing window. Over the same period, firm assets under management effectively double from US$1.54bn to US$3.04bn. There is no evidence to suggest that funds managed by listed firms are better able to manage operational …

The Keck Summer Collaborative Research Program provides opportunities for Linfield College students and faculty to conduct research on issues related to the Pacific Northwest, and to bring the research findings back into the classroom within the subsequent academic year. Students partner with faculty to conduct research and present their work to other students, Linfield staff and faculty, and community members during a series of brown bag lunches. Kathie Byers, Katelyn Henson, Ashley Streich, and Shelby VandeBergh conducted research with Sharon Wagner and Lisa Weidman and gave this presentation during the summer of 2013.
