First Price Auctions, Lotteries, And Risk Preferences Across Institutions, Russell P. Engel
First Price Auctions, Lotteries, And Risk Preferences Across Institutions, Russell P. Engel
WCBT Faculty Publications
There is an unsettled debate in experimental economics literature regarding the consistency of individuals' risk preferences in varying institutions. Much of this debate stems from observations of subjects' bids in sealed-bid auctions and the implications of those bids. In this paper, I have subjects participate in a sealed-bid auction experiment and then examine if the ostensible risk parameter that one can back out from subjects' bids matches up with their elicited risk preference from a separate task in the experiment. I find that subjects do exhibit consistent risk preferences. The aggregate measure of the subjects' risk parameter is stable across …

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
Probing the changing makeup of American college campuses, Adult Children of Immigrant Entrepreneurs: Memories and Influences offers unparalleled insight into the journeys of today’s graduate students born to immigrant entrepreneur parents.
Through interviews with 40 graduate students attending Massachusetts colleges from across the country, Adult Children of Immigrant Entrepreneurs unearths the unique challenges, skills and propensities engendered by growing up in a household where at least one parent ran a business. It also reveals that the students feel a deep-seated desire to give back to the immigrant communities into which they were born and which helped to mold their identities.

Volunteer Satisfaction And Intent To Remain: An Analysis Of Contributing Factors Among Professional Golf Event Volunteers, Gina Pauline
Volunteer Satisfaction And Intent To Remain: An Analysis Of Contributing Factors Among Professional Golf Event Volunteers, Gina Pauline
Falk College Research Center
Sport events are increasingly reliant on episodic volunteers for the successful delivery of an event. As there continues to exist a surge in the organization of sporting events coupled with the demand for volunteers, event organizers must concern themselves with utilizing the appropriate recruitment and retention strategies. In an effort to do this, one must understand the points of satisfaction for volunteers as well as factors influencing their future intentions to volunteer. While there exists a plethora of research to understand the motivation of volunteers, exploring the antecedents of volunteer satisfaction as well as intent to remain has been limited. …
Managing Individual And Organizational Performance: The Critical Mediating Role Of Collaboration, Oliver L.G Bouclier
Managing Individual And Organizational Performance: The Critical Mediating Role Of Collaboration, Oliver L.G Bouclier
Student Scholarship
Although collaboration has often been suggested as a critical factor for improving performance, its relation to individual and organizational performance has been given little attention in management research. This paper proposes a model of collaboration including affective, cognitive and organizational antecedents, and measures its effects on individual and organizational success. Over 900 front line employees in two firms in the service industry were surveyed. Structural Equation Modeling and bootstrap analysis were used to examine its role as a mediator between three independent variables (i.e. commitment, self-efficacy, and rewards) and three dependent variables (i.e. individual success, organizational efficiency and quality) while …
Social Entrepreneurial Venture Performance: The Impact Of Behaviors And Organizing Activities, Aparna Katre
Social Entrepreneurial Venture Performance: The Impact Of Behaviors And Organizing Activities, Aparna Katre
Student Scholarship
Social-purpose entrepreneurs in achieving the “middle-ground” of social-mission and profits, face unique legitimacy-related challenges. Regardless of the legal structure and the specific social-mission, they need to demonstrate behaviors and undertake activities which satisfy both mission and business stakeholders. This research explores the relationships between entrepreneurial behaviors, organizing activities and early stage venture performance. Results show that entrepreneur’s proactiveness positively effects both mission and business performance. Contrary to intuition mission organizing activities dampen the effect of experimentation on mission performance particularly for entrepreneurs with prior for-profit experience. Entrepreneurs with for-profit experience may maintain caution regarding how much they do to achieve …
Forecasting Bond Risk Premia Using Technical Analysis, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh, Fuwei Jiang, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou
Forecasting Bond Risk Premia Using Technical Analysis, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh, Fuwei Jiang, Jun Tu, Guofu Zhou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
While economic variables have been used extensively to forecast the U.S. bond risk premia, little attention has been paid to the use of technical indicators which are widely employed by practitioners. In this paper, we fill this gap by studying the predictive ability of using a variety of technical indicators vis-a-vis the economic variables. We find that the technical indicators have statistically and economically significant in- and out-of-sample forecasting power. Moreover, we find that utilizing information from both technical indicators and economic variables substantially increases the forecasting performances relative to using just economic variables.

Switzerland has a long tradition of expertise in the fields of science, research and education, with “science diplomacy” (SD) now assuming an important role for innovation economies. Past experience shows that international scientific cooperation can have valuable outcomes for the involved countries and complements traditional foreign policy and diplomacy. In Switzerland, a worldwide network of science and technology outposts under the auspices of the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER) in cooperation with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) was established in 2000. The very swissnex network around the world defines one of those established science diplomacy …

What The Person Brings To The Table: Personality, Coping, And Work–Family Conflict, Jeanine K. Andreassi
What The Person Brings To The Table: Personality, Coping, And Work–Family Conflict, Jeanine K. Andreassi
WCBT Faculty Publications
Employees (N = 291) of various industries and companies were surveyed to study how individual factors (coping and personality) affect work–family conflict: strain-based work-to-family conflict (S-WFC), time-based work-to-family conflict (T-WFC), strain-based family-to-work conflict (S-FWC), and time-based family-to-work conflict (T-FWC). As expected, passive coping was related to significantly higher levels of S-WFC, S-FWC, and T-FWC. Unexpectedly, active coping was related to higher levels of S-WFC. As hypothesized, social support coping was negatively related to work–family conflict, but only for T-WFC. Venting was positively related to S-WFC. As predicted, neuroticism was positively related to S-WFC, T-WFC, and S-FWC. Passive coping mediated …

Sustainability Leader Competencies: A Grounded Theory Study, Pamela G. Schwalb
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this critical qualitative study was to develop a theory of the competencies of a sustainability leader, grounded in research. A sustainability leader is generally described as an individual who creates profit for his/her stakeholders, while protecting the environment and improving the lives of those for whom he/she impacts as a result of his/her leadership. Nearly 60 individuals familiar with sustainability were asked to characterize an effective leader of a sustainability initiative or a sustainability organization.
The study revealed there is more than one way to be a sustainability leader—different paths can result in decisions and actions that …
Dating The Timeline Of Financial Bubbles During The Subprime Crisis, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Dating The Timeline Of Financial Bubbles During The Subprime Crisis, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
A new recursive regression methodology is introduced to analyze the bubble characteristics of various financial time series during the subprime crisis. The methods modify a technique proposed in Phillips, Wu, and Yu (2011) and provide a technology for identifying bubble behavior with consistent dating of their origination and collapse. The tests serve as an early warning diagnostic of bubble activity and a new procedure is introduced for testing bubble migration across markets. Three relevant financial series are investigated, including a financial asset price (a house price index), a commodity price (the crude oil price), and one bond price (the spread …

Regulating Business Impacts On Human Rights In Southeast Asia - Lessons From The Eu, Mahdev Mohan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The mid-June endorsement by the United Nations Human Rights Council of a new set of Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights has been welcomed as the authoritative global standard for corporations to respect human rights. The Guiding Principles are the culmination of a 6-year UN-commissioned study by Professor John Ruggie, which concludes that companies should carry out human rights due diligence to identify, prevent, mitigate, and account for how they address their adverse human rights impacts. Drawing on related regulation in Europe, this article considers how best to implement the Guiding Principles in Southeast Asia.

Singapore's Venture Into The Gulf: Undiscovered Treasure Or Empty Pot?, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred How, Joses Wong
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Singapore: a country synonymous with business efficiency, strict laws and a reputation that belies its miniscule size. Its state-enterprise network and attempts at grafting “Singapore-styled” investment enclaves onto foreign locales often receive attention from the international community. These state-engineered projects are premised on the exportability of Singapore’s state credibility, systemic and operational efficiencies as well as the technological competencies of Singapore companies, to locations where these attributes are less distinct. This paper, as part of our series on this topic, revisits the city-state’s determined efforts to encapsulate economic space for Singapore-based firms, enabling them to expand beyond the region. This …

In Search Of A Different Accounting Graduate: Entry-Point Determinants Of Students’ Performance In An Undergraduate Accountancy Degree Programme In Singapore, Poh Sun Seow, Pan, Gary, Siok Wan Joanne Tay
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This study investigates the association of prior academic achievement, admission interview, critical thinking, mathematical aptitude, gender and age with successful academic performance in an undergraduate accountancy degree programme at a Singapore university. The purpose of revisiting the determinants of academic performance is twofold: firstly, university accounting education in Singapore has changed greatly since Koh and Koh’s earlier study (1999), so this study examines if determinants previously identified as significant continue to be so in the new setting; secondly, the study tests the usefulness of admission interview in identifying applicants who achieve subsequent academic success. All the data on students’ performance …
Social Marketing As A Catalyst For Building New Relationships Between Sport Practitioners And Academicians, Eric C. Schwarz, Dallas Branch
Social Marketing As A Catalyst For Building New Relationships Between Sport Practitioners And Academicians, Eric C. Schwarz, Dallas Branch
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
Social marketing, conceptualized by Kotler and Zaltman (1971) as a means to promote social objectives and causes more effectively, has the potential to be the catalyst for addressing the disparity and creating positive perceptions. Social marketing is a significant means to address communication, conceptualization, and intellectual gaps between groups, which often results in clarifying differences in product and value outcomes; and the need for change and shifts in paradigms associated with practitioner-academician interaction (Hanna, 2001). Primary and secondary research conducted showed that there is fragmentation within the sport industry between academicians and practitioners, resulting in a large intellectual gap. It …

Betting On The U.S. Market A Discussion Of The Legality Of Sports Gaming Businesses, Glenn Light, Karl Rutledge, Quinton Singleton
Occasional Papers
Over time, the US sports gaming industry has progressed dramatically beyond what the US anti-gaming law drafters envisioned. The result is a system of mostly antiquated laws controlling modern industry causing confusion across the board. This discussion, therefore, intends to shed light on the US sports gaming legal framework, including analysis of the preeminent US laws that regulate the sports gaming industry and a brief review of various sports gaming businesses that fall within the US legal rubric.

The process of acquiring a Nevada gaming license is long and consists of several procedures. Although the process is time-consuming, it is far from Byzantine or obscure; each step, as defined by statute and precedent, flows logically from the one before. This paper provides an overview of licensing process in Nevada, with additional information on the reasoning behind several of the procedures involved.
The Five-Factor Consumer Behavior Model For Intercollegiate Football Tickets Consumption, Jennifer Y. Mak, Siu Yin Cheung
The Five-Factor Consumer Behavior Model For Intercollegiate Football Tickets Consumption, Jennifer Y. Mak, Siu Yin Cheung
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
Collegiate football ticket sales supply over 20% of the athletic department revenues (NCAA, 2008) and are an important part of the income stream, as pre-sold season tickets are guaranteed income. The purpose of this study was to examine the theoretical constructs of a five-factor consumer behavior model for intercollegiate football tickets consumption. The participants were spectators of a NCAA Division IA football annual player draft game (n=201). Around half of the participants were current season ticket holders (54.2%) and married (49.2%). Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was utilized to analyze the factorial validity of the five-factor consumer behavior model for intercollegiate …
Arrow-Fisher-Hanemann-Henry And Dixit-Pindyck Option Values Under Strategic Interactions, Tomoki Fujii, Ryuichiro Ishikawa
Arrow-Fisher-Hanemann-Henry And Dixit-Pindyck Option Values Under Strategic Interactions, Tomoki Fujii, Ryuichiro Ishikawa
Research Collection School Of Economics
We extend the Arrow-Fisher-Hanemann-Henry (AFHH) and Dixit-Pindyck (DP) option values to game situations. By reinterpreting the AFHH option value as a change in the surplus from conservation because of the prospect of future information, we deal with the conceptual difficulty associated with the AFHH option value in the presence of strategic interactions. We then introduce the DP option value into a game situation. We show that the equivalence between the expected value of information and the DP option value in the standard model does not hold under strategic interactions.

Specification Sensitivity In Right-Tailed Unit Root Testing For Explosive Behavior, Peter C. B. Phillips, Shu-Ping Shi, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
Right-tailed unit root tests have proved promising for detecting exuberance in economic and financial activities. Like left-tailed tests, the limit theory and test performance are sensitive to the null hypothesis and the model specification used in parameter estimation. This paper aims to provide some empirical guidelines for the practical implementation of right-tailed unit root tests, focusing on the sup ADF test of Phillips, Wu and Yu (2011), which implements a right-tailed ADF test repeatedly on a sequence of forward sample recursions. We analyze and compare the limit theory of the sup ADF test under deferent hypotheses and model specifications. The …
Managing Successive Generation Product Diffusion In The Presence Of Strategic Consumers, Zhiling Guo
Managing Successive Generation Product Diffusion In The Presence Of Strategic Consumers, Zhiling Guo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Frequent new product release and technological uncertainty about the release time pose significant challenges for firms to manage successive generation of products. On the one hand, strategic consumers may delay their purchase decision and substitute the earlier generation with the newer generation product. On the other hand, the firm must fully anticipate consumer reactions and take into account the effect of their strategic behavior on product pricing and successive generation product diffusion. This paper proposes a prediction market to forecast new product release. We show that the market information aggregation mechanism can improve forecast accuracy of new product launch. Better …

Assessing Event Quality Of High School Football Games: Development Of A Scale, Kevin Byon, Matthew Ziemnik, Eddie T. C. Lam, James J. Zhang
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
The purpose of this study was two-fold: (a) to identify the dimensions of event quality associated with high school football games and (b) to develop a scale, Event Quality Scale of High School Football (EQS-HSF) that measures event quality of high school football games. Applying a random cluster sampling method, participants were adult spectators (N = 404) from three high school football home games. Following the scale development procedures suggested by Churchill’s (1979), a total of 25 items under six factors (Game Attractiveness, Event Setting, Economic Consideration, Social Opportunity, Exciting Atmosphere, and Enjoyment Experience) were written and validated through qualitative …
