Using GLOBE classification and findings, this paper compares the family characteristics and work cultures of family businesses in Anglo, Germanic, and Nordic cultures. Results indicate differing patterns in terms of the involvement of the family in the family business and other key organizational dimensions. While all three regions share their weak family orientation, the Nordic and Germanic regions share stronger future orientation and uncertainty avoidance. The Anglo and Germanic regions share stronger performance orientation and the Nordic region stands out for its low power distance and low assertiveness. Overall, the characteristics of family businesses in the three regions may be …

Socially Responsible Investing: A Comparative Analysis For The Bluegrass Community Foundation, Andrew Hedrick
Socially Responsible Investing: A Comparative Analysis For The Bluegrass Community Foundation, Andrew Hedrick
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
In the fall of 2010 the Blue Grass Community Foundation began considering whether an updated investment strategy that included Socially Responsible Investing would be advantageous and in line with the mission of the organization. The question was raised whether this type of investing meant that the return on investment from securities currently held in the Foundation’s portfolio had to be sacrificed in order to incorporate this type of investment philosophy into the existing criteria used to invest the organization’s assets.
This paper examines literature relevant to the topic and conducts an analysis of a sample of mutual funds currently available …
U.S. State Employee Pension Systems: An Investigation Into The Causes Of Unfunded Liabilities, Chuck Truesdell
U.S. State Employee Pension Systems: An Investigation Into The Causes Of Unfunded Liabilities, Chuck Truesdell
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Defined benefit retirement plans for state employees have come under fire, both financially and politically, following recent market volatility and subsequent losses in pension investments. Asset losses matched with liabilities that are set years in advance translate to pressures on state policymakers and plan administrators to either find ways to improve the finances of these pension systems or transition to defined contribution plans that put the financial risk on individual employees rather than the state government. Because most states are legally and contractually obligated to pay retiree benefits regardless of the pension system’s financial condition — even to the point …
From Low-Quality Reporting To Financial Crises: Politics Of Disclosure Regulation Along The Economic Cycle, Jeremy Bertomeu, Robert P. Magee
From Low-Quality Reporting To Financial Crises: Politics Of Disclosure Regulation Along The Economic Cycle, Jeremy Bertomeu, Robert P. Magee
Olin Business School Faculty Research
This paper examines how financial reporting regulations aff ect, and respond to, macroeconomic cycles by exploring a pos - itive framework in which regulators subject to political pr essures respond to cyclical demands by borrowers and lender s. We establish that, as economic conditions initially declin e, political power shifts toward interest groups favoring l ess fi- nancial transparency. What follows is a counter-cyclical i ncrease in economic activity, as more non-reporting loans a re financed, possibly coincidental with more aggregate uncert ainty. During a recession, reporting quality is increased, po- tentially causing a crisis-like adjustment of economic act ivity …
A Theory Of Voluntary Disclosure And Cost Of Capital, Edwige Cheynel
A Theory Of Voluntary Disclosure And Cost Of Capital, Edwige Cheynel
Olin Business School Faculty Research
This paper explores the links between firms’ voluntary disclosures and their cost of capital. Existing studies investigate the relation between mandatory disclosures and cost of capital and find no crosssectional effect but a negative association in time-series. In this paper, I find that when disclosure is voluntary firms that disclose their information have a lower cost of capital than firms that do not disclose, but the association between voluntary disclosure and cost of capital for disclosing and nondisclosing firms is positive in aggregate. I further examine whether reductions in cost of capital indicate improved risksharing or investment efficiency. I also …
The More Things Change – Much Talk Of Reform, But Are Real Results Likely?, Erik M. Jensen
The More Things Change – Much Talk Of Reform, But Are Real Results Likely?, Erik M. Jensen
Faculty Publications
This article expresses skepticism that some of the proposals of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (the so-called “debt commission”) are likely to go far as part of any tax reform associated with deficit reduction, and it describes one recent judicial decision that at least temporarily calls into question the codification of the economic substance doctrine.

Expressions Of Gratitude In Disaster Management: An Economic, Social Marketing And Public Policy Perspective On Post-Katrina Campaigns, Randle D. Raggio, Judith Anne Garretson Folse
Marketing Faculty Publications
In this article, the authors argue that in the wake of a major disaster, it is not only appropriate but also beneficial for governments to spend public funds to support official gratitude campaigns in response to outside assistance. These assertions are based on results of multiple studies on gratitude from both psychology and marketing that show that expressions of gratitude can offer both economic and social marketing benefits. Evidence demonstrates increased consumer willingness to purchase products produced in the devastated area and intentions to continue prosocial support through volunteerism and financial donations after receiving expressions of gratitude. Evidence also shows …
Har-Tru Sports: Serving Up Growth In 2011, Roger R. Schnorbus, Littleton M. Maxwell
Har-Tru Sports: Serving Up Growth In 2011, Roger R. Schnorbus, Littleton M. Maxwell
Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022
Randy Futty, the General Manager of HAR-TRU Sports (HTS), a division of the Luck Companies set a deadline of mid August, 2011 to develop a five year strategic/growth plan for his business. In fiscal 2010, the division had achieved net sales of $10 million and Futty's objective was to grow the business to $15 million by fiscal 2015.
On the positive side, growth opportunities existed geographically in both the western U.S. and in global markets although it would be organizationally challenging to service such markets. Also, various new tennis accessory products and services were being developed by HTS to complement …
Health Care Reform's Effect On Private Medical Practices, Spencer R. Clark
Health Care Reform's Effect On Private Medical Practices, Spencer R. Clark
CMC Senior Theses
In March of 2010, the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, signed into law a health care reform bill that will change the medical and business approach to healthcare that has been witnessed for quite some time. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aims to eliminate several inefficiencies encountered in our current health care system, as well as extend coverage by providing affordable care for the roughly forty six million Americans currently uninsured. Many of the changes will be implemented over the next several years, but hospitals, businesses, physicians, and insurance companies are no doubt planning …
The Disconnect Between Employer Costs And Employee Value, Kevin F. Hallock
The Disconnect Between Employer Costs And Employee Value, Kevin F. Hallock
Economics Faculty Publications
There is a tremendous disconnect between the cost of compensation to employers and the value employees place on that compensation. Companies pay a lot more for workers than workers see in their paychecks. The average worker in the US costs his/her employee $29.52 per hour. But only $20.50 of that appeared in the worker's paycheck as wage and salary. The other $8.96 is attributable to other employer costs that employees do not immediately see. Of the $8.96, $2.04 is for paid leave, $0.71 is for supplemental pay, $2.60 is for insurance, $1.31 is for retirement savings, and $2.30 is for …

Marketers frequently use promotions to enhance sales and increase consumers' perceptions of value. However, most promotions usually come with restrictions, such as time expiration, quantity or product model restriction, etc. In the present research, the effect of the stage in the purchase process when the consumer finds out about the restriction is investigated. The findings indicate that the later in the purchase process the consumer discovers the restriction, the greater is the perception that the effort invested into the purchase is wasted, consequently resulting in lower promotion and price fairness. This effect is mediated through the feeling of entitlement to …

A Time Series Investigation Of The Impact Of Corporate And Personal Current Taxes On Economic Growth In The U.S., Peter J. Saunders
A Time Series Investigation Of The Impact Of Corporate And Personal Current Taxes On Economic Growth In The U.S., Peter J. Saunders
Economics Faculty Scholarship
This paper investigates the impact of corporate income taxes and personal current taxes on economic growth. Time-series tests analyzing the relationship between corporate taxes and nonresidential investment are implemented. Also tests of the impact of personal current taxes on the labor supply, approximated by the average weekly overtime hours in manufacturing, are undertaken. These tests include cointegration, vector error correction (VEC) estimation, and Granger causality testing of the relevant time-series data. Cointegration tests indicate the existence of a stable long run relationship between corporate taxes and nonresidential investment. Further investigation of this relationship is undertaken within the VEC testing framework. …
The History Of Technical Communication Instruction At Missouri University Of Science And Technology: The Evolution Of A Curriculum, Elizabeth Marie Roberson
The History Of Technical Communication Instruction At Missouri University Of Science And Technology: The Evolution Of A Curriculum, Elizabeth Marie Roberson
Masters Theses
"This thesis provides a written record of the history of technical communication instruction at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). Beginning with the school's inception in 1871 as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM) through to the year 2005, I have examined course catalogs and department files and conducted interviews to provide an overview of the evolution of technical communication instruction at this institution. To better understand this evolution, I have also provided a framework for the development of the English department from a single course in 1871 to the current Department of English and Technical …
Data-Driven Decision Making As A Tool To Improve Software Development Productivity, Mary Erin Brown
Data-Driven Decision Making As A Tool To Improve Software Development Productivity, Mary Erin Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The worldwide software project failure rate, based on a survey of information technology software manager's view of user satisfaction, product quality, and staff productivity, is estimated to be between 24% and 36% and software project success has not kept pace with the advances in hardware. The problem addressed by this study was the limited information about software managers' experiences with data-driven decision making (DDD) in agile software organizations as a tool to improve software development productivity. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how agile software managers view DDD as a tool to improve software development productivity and …

Segmenting Motivation: An Analysis Of Fantasy Baseball Motives And Mediated Sport Consumption, Brendan Dwyer, Stephen L. Shapiro, Joris Drayer
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
Fantasy sport consumer behavior research is a burgeoning area of inquiry as this growing segment of sport fans exhibits unconventional, yet robust media consumption habits. In addition, consumer motivation and market segmentation represent core principles within the study of marketing, yet the integration of these two essential concepts with regard to sport consumers is limited. The purpose of this study was to explore fantasy baseball motives, develop a motive-based taxonomy of users, and quantify the differences between segments through an examination of mediated sport consumption. An exploratory hierarchal cluster analysis with a subsequent K-means analysis was conducted to determine the …
Information Systems Skills Differences Between High-Wage And Low-Wage Regions: Implications For Global Sourcing, Kate Kaiser
Information Systems Skills Differences Between High-Wage And Low-Wage Regions: Implications For Global Sourcing, Kate Kaiser
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Developing Information Systems (IS) skills for a company’s workforce has always been challenging, but global sourcing growth has caused the determination of needed IS skills to be more complex. The increased use of outsourcing to an IS service provider and from high-wage regions to low-wage regions has affected what IS skills are required globally and how to distribute the workforce to meet these needs. To understand what skills are needed in locations that seek and those that provide outsourcing, we surveyed IS service provider managers in global locations. Results from 126 reporting units provide empirical evidence that provider units in …
Towards Symmetry In The Law Of Branding, Rebecca Tushnet
Towards Symmetry In The Law Of Branding, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Companies sometimes want to abandon an old identity and rebrand with a new one. Trademark law probably does not have much to say about rebranding in itself. But we should be careful about how we think about rebranding and other undisclosed source relationships because, if not handled properly, law’s recognition of such techniques could end up reinforcing trademark owners’ ability to deter competition and control free speech.

Stakeholder Orientation, Managerial Discretion And Nexus Rents, Robert A. Phillips, Shawn L. Berman, Heather Elms, Mechael E. Johnson-Cramer
Management Faculty Publications
A firm's orientation toward its stakeholders determines how it will use the discretion accorded to it by external and internal circumstances. The interaction between these two factors affects a firm's ability to create value in the short term and influences the level of discretion available to the firm in the long term. We argue that the interplay of discretion and orientation create a vicious (or virtuous) cycle, in which the firm either creates or destroys goodwill with stakeholders, thereby making it more or less likely that stakeholders will grant discretion in the future. This argument suggests an account of stakeholder …

Stakeholder Theory In Strategic Management: A Retrospective, Jeffrey S. Harrison
Management Faculty Publications
This chapter will provide a description of the personal journey of the author who, as a newly graduated Ph.D. in strategic management in 1985, embraced stakeholder theory. Perhaps one of the interesting aspects of this narrative is that the field of strategic management itself was in its infancy at the time of my graduation. So I have “grown up” in the strategy field while simultaneously observing and to some extent participating in the development of what we now call stakeholder theory. Over the past two and a half decades I have frequently found myself frustrated by my strategy colleagues’ lack …

Urban League Of Central Carolinas – Civil Rights Organizations In A New Era: An Action Research Study Of One Organization’S Pursuit Of New Strategies, Harry L. Alston
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
What leadership approaches and operational strategies should traditional civil rights organizations, like the Urban League, undertake to in this post-civil rights era? Specifically at the local level, what expectations must the Urban League of Central Carolinas satisfy to reassert its leadership in Charlotte? In recent years, an increasing array of social enterprises across different sectors has emerged to address failures in civil society. Civil rights organizations have long served a niche in the battle for an equitable society. However, the role of civil rights organizations in community revitalization has been diffuse and subject to fundraising constraints. I undertook this action …
