A Comparison Of Market Entry Strategies Adopted By Information And Communication Technology (Ict) Firms From Major And Emerging Software Exporting Nations, Stephen Kelly, Jennifer Harrison
A Comparison Of Market Entry Strategies Adopted By Information And Communication Technology (Ict) Firms From Major And Emerging Software Exporting Nations, Stephen Kelly, Jennifer Harrison
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
This study examines the market entry practices of Australian and Pakistani Information and Communication Technology (ICT) firms and the proposition that Local Software Economy (LSE) maturity affects the selection of market entry practices. The question is significant as it is focused on an indirect effect – namely LSE maturity – on the adoption of market entry practices, with indirect effects being identified in recent literature as being significant and an area in need of further research. The findings provide support for the proposition, indicating that Australian and Pakistani firms, representative of firms operating in high and low maturity LSEs, respectively, …
The Creation And Growth Of Information Technology Communication (Ict) Industrial Clusters: The New Zealand Case, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly
The Creation And Growth Of Information Technology Communication (Ict) Industrial Clusters: The New Zealand Case, Malcolm Fraser, Stephen Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
This paper is based on a review of literature into industrial clusters and subsequently discusses identified success factors within the context of ICT industrial clusters generally and New Zealand ICT industrial clusters in particular. It is argued that through identifying the success attributes underpinning industrial clusters a baseline can be established for decision-making by both industry vertical groups and various levels of government. It is also proposed that the application of this baseline logic to the development of New Zealand ICT clusters will enhance the domestic and international development of these clusters. The paper identifies that the key components of …

Crisis Opportunism: Bailouts And E-Scads In The Gfc, Judy Johnston, Alexander Kouzmin, Kym Thorne, Stephen Kelly

As a response to the junk debt-inspired global economic crisis, governments, with supra-national organizational approval, have appropriated billions of taxpayers dollars for bailouts, have set up special funds and underwritten depositors savings in the desperate hope of alleviating the threat of rapid, economic decline and systemic destruction of value. Whether these governments have a democratic mandate for such unprecedented action is debatable. More importantly, though, is whether such decisions amount to good re-regulatory policy. First, it is known that some of the bailout money to large corporations has been squandered by oligarchic recipients and appropriated by them in their own …

The Function And Character Of Relationship Benefits: Transferring Capabilities And Resources To The Small Firm, Stephen Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
Purpose – This paper aims to critique the foundations of the relationship benefits concept and develop a theoretical model that is tested and validated. Design/methodology/approach – A series of exploratory in-depth interviews were initially conducted and the results considered against extant literature. This was followed by a mail survey of the selected population that resulted in 254 usable responses that represented an effective response rate of 21.4 per cent. Findings – The findings demonstrate that relationship benefits sought by small firms collaborating with larger partners can be classified as cost, service, image and flexibility benefits and suggest that their transfer …

Standing Alone: Small Business And The Global Market, Damian Hine, Stephen Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
This paper takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the exploration of the role small businesses play in the globalization of the Australian economy. We ask: do SMEs exist primarily to service the demands of their larger counterparts, relying on large firms to enter foreign markets, or do they have the ability to enter global markets as 'independent' entities, sustaining a consistent competitive advantage. A multiple case study approach has been applied to answer the research questions. Findings indicate that small firms are indeed independent and dynamic operators, crucial to Australia's economic success, and small firms are effective in entering foreign markets …

The Configuration And Function Of Strategic Benefits, Stephen J. Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
This paper overcomes limitations evident in extant literature by examining the foundations of the relationship benefits concept and developing a theoretical model that is tested and validated. The findings indicate that salient relationship benefits evident in business-tobusiness relationships can be classified as cost, service, image and flexibility benefits, or more broadly, as strategic benefits that facilitate competitive advantage through the operationalisation of a cost leadership, differentiation or all-rounder strategy.

Backpackers, Byron And Brand: The Power Of Wom, Janet Hanlan, Stephen Kelly

Tourist destination brand image is a major influencing factor in traveler destination choice. This exploratory research into the information sources from which destination brand image evolves, aims to provide insights which may improve destination marketing communication strategies. Indepth interviews with 21 international backpackers on Australia’s northern New South Wales coast indicate that mainstream media played little or no part in the formation of respondents’ image of the coastal destination of Byron Bay. Research findings show word-of-mouth (WOM) and autonomous independent information sources were the key mediums through which respondents formed their image of this iconic Australian tourist destination. Findings suggest …
Electronic Retail (E-Tail) Image Components And Their Association With Variety Seeking And Avid Shoppers, Stephen Kelly, Don Scott, Simon Wilde
Electronic Retail (E-Tail) Image Components And Their Association With Variety Seeking And Avid Shoppers, Stephen Kelly, Don Scott, Simon Wilde
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
An examination of image attributes important to on-line customers of a major Australian retailer identified three e-tail store image dimensions; core demands, institutional factors and information. The three dimensions were further examined against variety seeking and avid shopper measures. Results indicated institutional factors were associated with variety seeking and avid shoppers and information with avid shoppers. From this result, it is suggested that e-tailing stores need to build their reputation and brand image via conventional media based promotional activities in order to attract variety seeking and avid shoppers and provide variety laden shopping experiences to retain variety seeking consumers. It …
Non-Local Masters Games Participants: An Investigation Of Copmpetitive Active Sport Tourist Motives, Pat Gillett, Stephen Kelly
Non-Local Masters Games Participants: An Investigation Of Copmpetitive Active Sport Tourist Motives, Pat Gillett, Stephen Kelly
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
Many governments within Australia actively support Masters Games with the expectation that such events generate significant economic benefits. However, while research demonstrates that 'non-local' participants provide greater economic value to the host region, little is known about this key participant category. In particular, previous Masters Games research has only briefly considered the influence of travel on participant motives. In order to address this gap in the literature, a qualitative investigation of the motives among non-local Masters Games participants was undertaken. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 non-local competitors prior to their participation in the 2005 Australian Masters Games. The …

Measuring Service Quality In A Corporatised Public Sector Environment, Karen Mcfadyen, Jennifer Harrison, Stephen Kelly, Don Scott
Adjunct Professor Stephen J Kelly
Using a modified SERVQUAL scale, this paper measures perceived service quality in a corporatised public sector environment. Five factors were identified: personalised proficiency, empathic professionalism, reliability, tangibles and access; explaining 61% of overall variance. Further analysis using multiple regression also indicated that 45% of the variability in customer satisfaction and 43% of the variability in overall service quality was explained by the five factors. The research was conducted in response to calls for the application of this measure and following a review of extant literature that indicated the limited number of studies undertaken within the public sector that assessed service …
