The Greening Of Strategic Hrm Scholarship, Susan E. Jackson, Janghoon Seo

Organization Management Journal

The topic of environmental sustainability is attracting increased attention among management scholars. Despite its importance to managers, employees, customers and other stakeholders, however, there is very little scholarship that considers the role of human resource management systems in organizations striving to achieve environmental sustainability. In this article, we propose several specific questions that such scholarship could address. By seeking answers to these questions, HRM scholars could contribute to improved organizational effectiveness and at the same time develop new theoretical models that more adequately reflect the complexity of organizational phenomena.

To assess what factors are driving the exponential growth of farmers’ markets in Kentucky, geospatial and statistical analysis of a database of 121 farmers’ markets was conducted. A statewide survey of market leaders and a case study of a single farmers’ market both identified reasons for growing support of farmers’ markets in Kentucky.

Market distribution, vendor levels, and gross sales were mapped against a backdrop of county urban classification, median household income, and education levels. All data was collected through out an eight week period and recorded to determine if prices, on average, are lower at famers' markets compared to their neighboring grocery. This data was used to compare prices of commodities at farmers' markets and neighboring grocery stores in San Luis Obispo County for five selected produce items. The article examines the teaching of business communication related to feedback, or the performance evaluation of employees and executives. The importance of feedback in both management and among teams in the workplace is considered. Models of performance evaluations are discussed. Teaching methods for discussing feedback in business communication courses are considered, with specific class assignments related to performance evaluation and evaluation among teams in the workplace are described. Reactions of students to these teaching methods are discussed.

The primary purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of culture on stock price volatility. The focal causal chain links dimensions of culture (i.e., linguistic structure and values) to globalization to the volatility of prices in 50 stock markets around the world. Other explanatory variables included in the model are characteristics of individual stock markets (age and market capitalization) and countries (per capita income and population). Partial least square regression is used to estimate the parameters of a comprehensive model using stock price volatility as the dependent variable. Daily average foreign exchange market turnover reached $4 trillion in April 2010, 20% higher than in 2007. Growth owed largely to the increased trading activity of “other financial institutions”, which contributed 85% of the higher turnover. Within this customer category, the growth is driven by high-frequency traders, banks trading as clients of the biggest dealers, and online trading by retail investors. Electronic trading has been instrumental to this increase, particularly algorithmic trading.

Venture backed firms with both exceptionally high and relatively low growth experience a comparatively fast turnover of executives, often resulting in multiple cohorts within the top management team (TMT). These tenure cohorts often act like warring tribes, generating value destroying affective conflict. While several studies have validated the relationship between tenure diversity and affective conflict, none explain its source. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted in-depth ethnographic interviews with 34 executives from six U.S. venture backed private companies. Our results move beyond those of previous studies on tenure based affective team conflict by revealing its source to be …

The lack of wind energy production could be the result of Nebraska’s unique public power districts that have eminent domain of distribution and retail sales of electricity in the State.
