New Product Development And Innovation Through Joint Knowledge Creation And Transfer In A Dyadic Supply Chain Relationship, Richard John Miller Jan 2010

New Product Development And Innovation Through Joint Knowledge Creation And Transfer In A Dyadic Supply Chain Relationship, Richard John Miller

ETD Archive

The development of radical and incremental products in the context of supply chain relationships is changing the competitive paradigms for individual firms. The knowledge required for innovation is no longer the sole responsibility of a single firm. As firms use their supply chain's knowledge stocks to innovate and develop products, the decisions regarding its internal and joint resource investments, the types of innovation, and how the firm and the supply chain respond to market turbulences must also change. In order to understand the dynamic behavior of this complex system, a System Dynamics simulation model of a focal firm, a supplier …

Asset Allocation With The Inclusion Of The Owner-Occupied Home, Michael M. Niro Jan 2010

Asset Allocation With The Inclusion Of The Owner-Occupied Home, Michael M. Niro

ETD Archive

For at least the last six decades optimal portfolio selection has been one of the main focuses of financial research. Since Markowitz (1952) many authors have developed ideas about the optimal allocation of assets that have reached today's mainstream portfolio decision-making. However, many of them miss the single largest investment most people make in their lifetime, their home. Therefore, this research seeks to analyze the impact of the owner-occupied home on the portfolio in order to determine its optimal allocation. The motivation for this analysis is derived from the individual investor who spends a lifetime saving in order to maximize …

There is …

Collaborative Planning Forecasting Replenishment (Cpfr);Successful Implementation Attributes, Robert G. Stoll Jan 2010

Collaborative Planning Forecasting Replenishment (Cpfr);Successful Implementation Attributes, Robert G. Stoll

ETD Archive

This dissertation paper offers a theoretical and empirical explanation for why interfirm collaborations form yet fail, and further suggests how firms might manage them for a more positive outcome. The main focus of this dissertation was to research and investigate the implementation issues in the early stages of CPFR. The crux of the argument is that firms enter into collaborative relationships because these are expected to yield superior results relative to alternate organizational forms in certain situations, offering potentially synergistic combinations of complementary resources and capabilities, yet such relationships are frequently prone to failure. Since CPFR implementations are a recent …

Absorptive Capacity And Failed Cross Border M&A, Ping Deng

Business Faculty Publications

Purpose – Chinese companies are increasingly using cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to source knowledge or strategic assets. For many, global acquisitions have proven to be highly problematic and value-destroying. The purpose of this paper is to address this critical acquisition failure issue from an absorptive capacity perspective. Design/methodology/approach – Guided by the framework that focuses on how acquiring a firm's weak absorptive capacity damages its ability to assimilate, integrate and apply external new knowledge, one high-profile Chinese failed acquisition: TCL acquisition of France's Thomson's TV business in 2004 is analyzed empirically. Findings – Acquisition performance of Chinese overseas M&A …

Gpa And Attribute Framing Effects: Are Better Students More Sensitive Or More Susceptible?, Ken Dunegan Jan 2010

Gpa And Attribute Framing Effects: Are Better Students More Sensitive Or More Susceptible?, Ken Dunegan

Business Faculty Publications

Data from 2 studies show students differ in terms of how attribute framing alters perceptions and reactions in a decision-making episode. Using student GPA as a moderator, results from a role-play–decision-making exercise (Experiment 1) show perceptions and intended actions of higher GPA students were more strongly affected by attribute framing manipulations than were participants with lower GPAs. A second experiment helped explain these findings. Results from Experiment 2 suggest students with higher GPAs responded to the inferred meaning of framed messages; that is, they looked beyond the literal message to find the message intended.

Nonlinear Bivariate Comovements Of Asset Prices: Theory And Tests, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Marco Corazza, Elisa Scalco Jan 2010

Nonlinear Bivariate Comovements Of Asset Prices: Theory And Tests, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Marco Corazza, Elisa Scalco

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Comovements among asset prices have received a lot of attention for several reasons. For example, comovements are important in cross-hedging and cross-speculation; they determine capital allocation both domestically and in international mean-variance portfolios and also, they are useful in investigating the extent of integration among financial markets. In this paper we propose a new methodology for the non-linear modelling of bivariate comovements. Our approach extends the ones presented in the recent literature. In fact, our methodology, outlined in three steps, allows the evaluation and the statistical testing of non-linearly driven comovements between two given random variables. Moreover, when such a …

Growing Up Financially Literate: A Lifelong Curriculum, Amanda J. Brown

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This work ventures to find a solution to one source of economic instability: financial illiteracy. The inability to manage money, caused by a lack of education, has led to poor decision making. These bad decisions can lead to a number of financial hardships, as well as emotional and physical problems. Better education can combat all of these symptoms and lead to a healthier financial future. Growing Up Financially Literate attempts to help close the curriculum gap surrounding financial literacy by recognizing that the gap does not only exist in a single age group. How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers Jan 2010

How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers

Faculty Articles

We posit that contexts in emerging markets are different from developed country contexts. These contextual differences necessitate the development and deployment of unique capabilities and strategies on the parts of companies operating there. While all emerging market countries are not uniform across all of the characteristics described below, there is a great deal of commonality on these conditions within the group of emerging market countries, by virtue of their similar stages of development. Thus, companies that develop their skill sets and products/services in one emerging market are likely to more easily be able to extend them to others. Conversely, there …

Staff Retention Factors In The Not-For-Profit Sector: An Examination Of A Western Australian Community Organisation, Nurdan Colleran, David Gilchrist, Charlotte Lucy Morris

Business Papers and Journal Articles

In Australia today Not-for-profit organisations, like most other entities, are trying to respond effectively to challenges associated with the recruitment and retention of competent, experienced and committed staff. Unlike government and commercial entities, however, the poor resourcing of Not-for-profit organisations makes it necessary to approach the issue of recruitment and retention with more creativity than perhaps is required of organisations in the other two sectors of the Australian economy. This is particularly the case for Not-for-profit organisations operating in Western Australia where the economic conditions based on resource exploitation make recruitment and retention, even in the context of the recently …

Return To Growth, Eric Thompson, University Of Nebraska-Lincoln

Business in Nebraska

U.S. Macroeconomic Outlook

After 18 months of decline, the United States economy returned to growth in mid-2009. Growth was tepid at first, with U.S. gross domestic product rising by just 2.2% in the 3rd quarter. But, growth was much more rapid in the 4th quarter, portending a solid recovery in 2010 and 2011. Economic expansion will be broad-based, with both household consumption and business investment rising, and employment increasing in most industries. The reasons for recovery are typical of other recoveries. Initially, the recovery is powered pent-up consumer demand among households who have retained spending power. Later, there …
