Organizational leaders in various sectors (public, private, and social) across the globe often acknowledge the importance of preparing both men and women for strong, competent leadership. To assist these organizations, researchers (e.g., Bass, 1990; Bennis, 1989) have been conducting leadership studies for decades in various disciplines (e.g., education, management, psychology) to better understand this complex phenomenon. Kowske and Anthony (2007), Ardichvili and Manderscheid (2008), and Madsen (2009) have also highlighted the importance of studying leadership development within the human resource development (HRD) arena in the U.S. and beyond. Climate Change And Real Estate: How Environmental Risks And Policies Impact Markets, Adele C. Morris

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Climate change could worsen environmental conditions that affect real estate values, such as extreme weather events and coastal erosion. But policies to prevent climate change can also affect real estate values, for example through higher energy prices and land use regulation. This lecture will examine the linkages between the climate change risks, climate policy, and real estate markets. We will also discuss the likely regional economic effects of recent proposed climate legislation.

Building on an orientation program established by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries' Human Resources unit for all new employees, the Research and Information Department developed a training and orientation program for new employees who participate in the reference desk service pool. A task force composed of service pool members created a checklist of expectations that led to a new mission statement and core values for the department as well as a time line for training new employees. The use of a staff wiki to provide access to the expectations, time line, and other resources is explored. Assessment …

This paper discusses event sponsorships in the 21st century and then applies this understanding to the practice of marketing events to potential sponsors. A sponsor contributes money, porducts or services in exchange for the opportunity to boost its image, products or serves in connection with an event, individual, team or venue. Most companies' motivations behind sponsoring events are to 1) increase brand awareness and 2) strengthen or change brand image. However they often don't understand the best ways to achieve these objectives. We compare the past and present strategies and discuss the best way to utilize an event sponsorship. We …

It was estimated that approximately 50% of the air trips, 20% of rail trips, and 15% of freeway bus trips in Taiwan’s western corridor would be replaced by Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) [5]. If the carriers of these trips are to compete with THSR, reducing flight frequency and allying airlines might be the most effective approaches. In this paper we calibrate the payoff functions of various modes with stated preference (SP) and revealed preference (RP) data and solve the new Nash Equilibrium by maximizing payoff functions with respect to fare rates and flight frequency after the operation of THSR. …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This research addresses a slot allocation planning problem of the container shipping company for satisfying the estimated seasonal demands on a liner service. We explore in detail the influenced factors of planning and construct a quantitative model for the optimum allocation of the ship’s slot spaces. An integer programming model is formulated to maximize the potential profits per round trip voyage for a liner company, and a real life example of an eastern Asia short sea service has been studied.
