The purpose of this study was to examine to the contribution of fathers' involvement in family leisure to aspects of family functioning. The sample consisted of 647 families of fathers and a youth from throughout the United States. The Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) was used to measure family leisure involvement. FACES II was used to measure family functioning. Results from the father and youth perspective indicated significant relationships between father involvement in both core and balance family leisure to various aspects of family functioning. The Impact Of Transaction Duration, Volume And Direction On Price Dynamics And Volatility, Anthony S. Tay, Christopher Ting, Yiu Kuen Tse, Mitch Warachka

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We explore the role of trade volume, trade direction, and the duration between trades in explaining price dynamics and volatility using an Asymmetric Autoregressive Conditional Duration model applied to intraday transactions data. Our results suggest that volume, direction and duration are important determinants of price dynamics, while duration is also an important determinant of volatility. However, the impact of volume and direction on volatility is marginal after controlling for duration, and the impact of volume on volatility appears to be confined to periods of infrequent trading.

Burnout among individual nurses in today's society is a paramount issue that carries a two-sided relationship. The individual nurse must be free of job stress and have personally obtained job satisfaction to alleviate aspects of burnout in the work environment (Maslach & Leiter, 2005). Spillover externalities can be explained as influences of the prices of neighboring properties on the price of a given one. Suppose there is a price change or changes in the amenity levels in a neighborhood. The effect of this change would be experienced by properties in a close proximity and the prices of the properties in close proximity might help explain the price of the property of interest. In the context of welfare valuation, this feature of spatial price interdependence or spillover effects has only recently received attention. We employ a cautious empirical approach to estimate the effect of taking Advanced Placement (AP) Economics in high school on student performance on a high-stakes, statewide End-of-Course Test (EOCT). Using data on all Georgia students who took economics from 2006 to 2008, we use propensity score matching to control for the selection of students into AP Economics. Our most conservative estimate makes an adjustment for teacher effects and suggests that students who take high school economics in an AP class score 0.283 standard deviations higher on the economics EOCT than “matched” students who are in high schools that do not …

Historical Cropping Practices, South Central Region Of Idaho, Emil Huseynov

College of Business and Economics Poster Presentations

This poster examines historical crop production in the South Central region of Idaho between 1938 and 2009. The South Central region is comprised of eight counties; Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka and Twin Falls (Figure 1). Historical acres harvested were examined for nine major crops; alfalfa hay (dry), barley, corn (grain), corn (silage), oats, potatoes, spring wheat, sugarbeets and winter wheat. Although other crops are grown in the area, the nine crops examined account for the greatest percentage of harvested acres within the region. Acres harvested were obtained from data available from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) …

• UNLV and Dornbusch and Associates have signed a contract for Dornbusch to conduct a “Visitor Services Feasibility, Compatibility, Market Study, and Business Plan” at the ranch, including all future museum and research center activities. This effort is kicking off in April 2010.
• UNLV is in the process of purchasing and installing a weather station at the ranch, and will conduct preliminary research using this equipment. Funding for a dual axis solar tracker was obtained from the UNLV sustainability initiative.

Actor-network theory is considered to have great potential for broadening and deepening our grasp of institutional work (LAWRENCE; SUDDABY, 2006). Given its focus on process, ANT offers a means to breathe life into the practices associated with institutionalization. With Callon’s (1986) four moments of translation as analytical lens, and with Ireland’s Industrial Development Authority as empirical example, I seek to address the concerns of Clegg and Machado da Silva (2009) by reconsidering “the role of agency, power, persistence and change in the process of institutionalization”.
