Understanding Work-To-Family Conflict: The Role Of Organization And Supervisor Support For Work-Life Issues, Melissa A. Warner, Peter A. Hausdorf

This study examined organization and supervisor support for work-life issues in the reduction of work-to-family conflict and its subsequent outcomes. Specifically, these sources of support were explored as antecedents, mediators and moderators in relation to work-to-family conflict and satisfaction. Observed variable path analysis was used with a sample of 207 health care workers to determine the specific relationship between organization and supervisor support for work-life issues, perceived work overload, job control, work-tofamily conflict and satisfaction outcomes. This article examines three forms of intelligence: social intelligence (SI), emotional intelligence (EI) and cultural intelligence (CQ). The aim is to establish the relationship that exists between EI and CQ, and to clearly show how they is distinct, but related constructs, as well as subsets of SI. A series of models is developed to support the various propositions presented and to show the evolution of ideas which build to the final integrated model. Market Uncertainty And Disclosure Of Internal Control Deficiencies Under The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Yongtae Kim, Myung Seok Park

This study examines cross-sectional differences in stock market reactions to the disclosure of internal control deficiencies under Section 302 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. We hypothesize that the market punishment for internal control problems will be less severe for internal control disclosure that helps reduce market uncertainty around the disclosure. We also predict that such a relation is dependent on the types of disclosure and the market's prior knowledge of the credibility of firms' financial reporting. We examine two of the most fascinating fraud cases that rocked the hedge fund industry: Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities and Bayou Management. From academic research and news reports, we distill important lessons for the hedge fund investor. Our key conclusions are (i) conflicts of interests are often symptomatic of more serious problems at hedge funds, (ii) auditing statements from obscure accounting firms should provide little assurance to investors, (iii) a comparison between the actual fund risk exposures based on realized returns with the theoretical risk exposures from the trading strategy serves as a useful cross-check for investors, and (iv) …

When Nicholas Negroponte mooted the idea of a US$100 laptop four years ago, he was met with scepticism. Undaunted, he and his team signed up partners and sponsors. Today, the end product, once described as “impossible”, is said to be inspiration behind netbooks. However, technological advancement was not the driving force behind the XO, as this laptop is called. Negroponte was motivated, instead, by the educational needs of developing nations, seeing that a large number of children in these countries receive little or no education. But just how far can inexpensive laptops go to address the needs of poverty-stricken communities?

Removing hazardous fuels to reduce the risk of wildfire has become a priority for land managers across the United States. Utilizing biomass taken from forests to cover the cost of fuel reduction is an attractive ideal. Effective utilization could also address important national challenges such as improving forest health, increasing domestic energy supplies, reducing carbon emissions, and revitalizing rural economies. However, getting woody biomass from the forest to the consumer is economically and logistically difficult, and efforts to make biomass utilization profitable have been disappointing so far. On-Campus Service Projects: An Experiment In Education For Liberation, Michael J. Gent

This article describes an approach to service-learning based on Paulo Freire’s model of education for liberation. On-campus Service Projects (OCSPs) differ markedly from typical service-learning assignments in two ways: (1) they take place in the students’ own college setting rather than out in the community; and (2) in my version, they challenge students to engage in critical thinking and acting (praxis) to transform ‘‘oppressive’’ situations within their institution. The article reviews Freire’s pedagogical approach and details how it is implemented in OCSPs. One of the most important design criteria for dairy cow housing is access to a comfortable lying area. Behaviors such as the time cows spend lying down and how often they lie down can be used to evaluate the quality of stalls; however, assessing lying behavior on farms can be challenging. Indices such as the cow comfort index (CCI) and stall use index (SUI) have been widely used in on-farm assessments. A Longitudinal Study Examining Changes In Students' Leadership Behavior, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

This study investigated the impact of a leadership development program in students' first year with the subsequent leadership behaviors of those students in their senior year. Significant changes were reported in the frequency of engaging in leadership behaviors from freshman to senior years. No differences were found on the basis of gender. In addition, significant differences in leadership behaviors were found between seniors who had participated in the leadership development program with a control group of seniors who had not participated. Results supported the impact of a formal leadership program upon students' leadership development.

Previous empirical studies have shown that consumers' hedonic shopping motivations can reliably predict their impulsive buying tendencies (IBT). Impulsivity has been shown to have strong roots in people’s personality (Verplanken and Herabadi 2001). This study extended current research to include two other personality constructs - shyness and sociability - that have not been tested against impulsivity in the literature. A questionnaire comprising of subscales of IBT, hedonic shopping motivations, shyness and sociability as developed by Verplanken and Herabadi (2001), Arnold and Reynolds (2003) and Cheek and Buss (1981) respectively was administered to 194 respondents in two prominent Dublin city centre …
