Food Marketing Association: Fund Raising Task Force, Miranda K. Owen

The objective of this project was to develop a sustainable fundraising program for the Food Marketing Association, a Western Michigan University student organization, which would not only provide income to the organization but provide an educational experience for the students. The concept was to contact a food manufacturer or marketing group and offer the resources of the student organization to introduce and test one of their new products on WMU's campus in exchange for a donation to the organization. The following report summarizes and outlines the process followed in order to obtain this position.

Economic Value Added (EVA), when applied properly in a company, impacts all departments and decisions. The equation for EVA as well as the adjustments that must be made to current accounting practices is the basis for an understanding of EVA. The success of EVA is displayed as companies that have implemented EVA to varying degrees are compared with companies that have not implemented EVA. Once the argument for the overall superiority of EVA is made, traditional performance measures and current accounting practices are evaluated. This study focuses on the role of information technologies in healthcare, and investigates the relationship of IT sophistication to patient safety, healthcare quality, and financial performance in Texas acute care hospitals. A value/supply chain perspective guides the development of a general model that integrates hospitals' IT sophistication with their patient and financial outcomes. From the model emerge hypotheses that are tested using the structural equation modeling approach, taking into account differences in outcomes across small, medium, and large hospitals. While IS researchers have often opined that leadership is important, a theoretical examination of leadership in the CIO context is lacking. We examine Leadership style in the light of the transformational leadership theory and its impact on organizational level variables such as CIO Role Effectiveness and IT ambidexterity, and individual level variables such as Leader-Member Exchange Relationship and the subordinate's general job satisfaction. Results indicate that contingent rewarding style impacted CIO role effectiveness, which in turn predicted IT ambidexterity. Transformational leadership was the strongest predictor of Leader-Member Exchange relationship, which in turn impacted job satisfaction.

This research aims to understand what types of learners (business school students) benefit most and what type of learners may not benefit at all from active learning methods. It is hypothesized that different types of students will achieve different levels of proficiency based on the teaching method. Several types of student characteristics are analyzed: grade point average, learning style, age, gender, and ethnicity. Three topics (in the introductory business statistics course) and five instructors covering seven class sections are used with three different experimental teaching methods. This study is directed towards the effects of bank lending, delinquencies, and other economic shocks on the performance of economic activity. I estimate the effect of these factors on employment, payrolls, and number of firms by firm size in the United States. Addressing conditions within the realm of small banks, one conclusion is that banks increase their total supply of bank credit after a reduction in capital levels. A number of former studies arrive at this conclusion, and this paper applies that hypothesis to more recent data. A common theme in related literature is that a "credit crunch" causes particular …

Phopshorylase kinase (PhK) is a hexadecameric holoenzyme made up of four different subunits in the arrangement (αβγδ)4 and has total molecular mass of 1.3MDa. Alpha and β are regulatory subunits, γ is catalytic, and δ is an intrinsic molecule of calmodulin. PhK is a serine threonine kinase with glycogenolytic regulatory functions. Our lab has recently discovered that the γ subunit can be alternatively processed to produce a truncated form of 181 residues (γ-181). This variant of γ contains a phosphorylation site for PK-C, and its activity is influenced by this phosphorylation. We are using a LexA based yeast two hybrid …

Several large, well known companies have begun to use EVA in recent years as an internal measure of performance, and one may speculate that its popularity will only continue. This paper shows what the EVA metric is and highlights some advantages and disadvantages from its proponents and critics.

The first question or concern surrounding the Rubberball analysis is the addition of new products. Rubberball has been considering adding products such as stock fonts or video. To assess this, we asked a simple question about how likely a consumer is to buy additional products. We then ran a simple means tests on the answers, and the recommendations became clear. There are two products that Rubberball should continue to look into. First is stock illustrations, followed by stock fonts. The mean of these two products was far above all others. The economic stresses on Maine’s businesses are growing. A slowing economy and rising input costs, particularly for energy, are increasing pressures in a state where concerns about the costs of doing business remain high. But there is much that businesses can do on their own to relieve some of these pressures. Even a quick examination of Maine’s energy situation shows that there are both real challenges and opportunities. Perhaps the single most effective action to enhance Maine’s business climate and economic competitiveness is to aggressively increase the energy efficiency of Maine’s economy.
