Computer Assisted Surgery: A Study In Technology Discontinuance, Jonathan B. Brewster

Computer assisted surgery has not been overwhelmingly adopted by surgeons even after extensive formal training in the technique. Physician technology adoption behavior is not well understood, particularly technology that changes clinical practice. Within technology adoption research there are limited studies in discontinuance. The traditional research states that discontinuers tend to be less educated and of a lower socio-economic status. This is clearly not the case with surgeons who experiment with but subsequently discontinue using computer assisted surgery. This paper is a proposal to research this discontinuance phenomenon.

Why do some work teams make more efficient resource-allocation decisions than others? Why are some organizations considered more innovative than others? These were the questions that led us to investigate decision-making processes in organizations of the durable consumer goods industry. This paper will test our theory that information-processing capabilities, information sharing through appropriate communication channels, combined with inclusive decision-making processes will create what we have called alignment or congruence in decision making, allowing organizations to make more effective and efficient resource-allocation decisions in innovation. From its inception less than ten years ago, when legalized gambling was passed in the state of Oklahoma, Cherokee Casino has gone from two bingo halls to seven casinos and a horse track. Included with the seven casinos are truck stops, outposts, motels, and hotels located throughout the state. It has grown from approximately 50 employees to over 3,000 companywide. This study sought to determine whether an MBA degree from Utah State University (USU) was meeting the emotional intelligence (EI) needs of the workplace from the perception of its graduates. This research assessed perception of EI skills with a researcher-designed instrument that consisted of a 22-question survey that was e-mailed to USU students who completed an MBA between 2000 and 2006. The survey questionnaire given to MBA graduates was titled Assessment of Emotional Intelligence and was divided into three distinct parts. From the Department of Labor, the best survey for flexibility data comes from the Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS is a monthly survey of 60,000 households that provides data on the labor force, employment, unemployment, and persons not in the labor force.

The benefit of the CPS is that it is large, reliable, and the sample is carefully weighted to provide nationally representative estimates. It also has a significant amount of other data, including a large amount of information on employee characteristics, occupation and industry classifications, and work schedules. Simultaneous Relationship Between Ownership Structure, Corporate Governance, And Firm Value In Indonesia, Kim Sung Suk

The South East Asian Journal of Management

The primary objective of this study is to test the simultaneous relationship between the firm value, the corporate governance practice, and the ownership structure on a sample of 114 companies quoted in the Jakarta Stoke Exchange (JSX). The study finds that the corporate governance practice fails to affect the firm value, but the firm value is a positive predictor of corporate governance practice. Further, the influence of corporate governance practice on the firm value becomes less when the wedge of the firm becomes higher. The study examines causes of performance decline and turnaround strategies of Indonesia following the 1997/1998 financial crisis. The sample chosen was from the large manufacturing firms in Indonesia. The result of this study found that competitive changes, poor management, high cost structure, economic changes and failure of major projects were the significant factors contributing to the performance decline during the crisis of 1997/1998, while restructuring strategies was important strategies adapted to turnaround firms.

The paper investigates measurement invariance of customer value construct across different populations (managers and customers). The purpose in doing this analysis is that whether the constructs were being mapped from two disctinct groups. Data for this study comes from two samples: hotel managers and hotel guests. All classified hotels across Indonesia were included. A total 231 managers and 385 customers responded to the survey. The results indicate the cocnceptualisation and operationalisation of customer value developed in this study, does not significantly generalise across managers and customers. Role Stressors And Job Performance: An Empirical Investigation In Malaysia, Aizzat Mohd. Nasurdin, Soon Lay Khuan

The South East Asian Journal of Management

The purpose of this study was to empirically evaluate the influence of role stressors (role conflict and role ambiguity) in predicting job performace (task performance and contextual performance). Survey data was drawn from a sample of 136 customer-contact employees within the telecomunications industry of Malaysia. Results of the regression analyses showed that role conflict alone had a significant and negative relationship with task performance. On the other hand, both role conflict and role ambiguity were found to be significantly and negatively related to contextual performance. Implications of the findings and directions for future research are discussed.
