Ex Post Valuation Correction And Motives Of Merger And Acquisition Decisions, Hien T. Nguyen Jul 2007

Ex Post Valuation Correction And Motives Of Merger And Acquisition Decisions, Hien T. Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This study seeks to decipher the motives of mergers and acquisitions and identify the source of value creation or destruction. The existing literature on corporate mergers and acquisitions generally agrees on four primary motives of merger and acquisition decisions: (1) market timing, (2) response to industry shocks, (3) agency cost and hubris, and (4) synergy. In studying the motives behind acquisition decisions, prior studies have used incomparable methodologies and measures, which often lead to inconclusive debates. In this study, we address the possibility that there could be multiple motives behind a merger. Instead of using a multitude of methodologies to …

Spreadsheet-Based Gis Models, Roger Blake, Jeffrey Keisler, Janet Wagner Jul 2007

Spreadsheet-Based Gis Models, Roger Blake, Jeffrey Keisler, Janet Wagner

College of Management Working Papers and Reports

Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which are computer-based systems that allow decision makers to incorporate geographically based data into their analyses, are widespread and powerful tools in many business and scientific settings today. In this paper, we present a tutorial discussing ways in which GIS functionality can be implemented within the spreadsheet environment. We show the straightforward and natural analogy between several GIS functions with spreadsheet functions, particularly for raster based data. We present two realistic examples meshing OR/MS methods with GIS methods --- an integration which is greatly enhanced by the “remarkable development platform” provided by spreadsheets. We discuss the …

Uncertainty, Technical Change, And Policy Models, Erin Baker, Leon Clarke, Jeffrey Keisler, Ekundayo Shittu

College of Management Working Papers and Reports

Both climate change and technical change are uncertain. In this paper we show the importance of including both uncertainties when modeling for policy analysis. We then develop an approach for incorporating uncertainty of technical change into climate change policy analysis. We define and demonstrate a protocol for bottom-up expert assessments about prospects for technologies. We then describe a method for using such assessments to derive a probability distribution over future abatement curves, and to estimate random return functions for technological investment in different areas. Finally, we show how these analytic results could be used in a variety of energy-economic models …

A Simple Model Of Interest Rate Term Structure, Tom Arnold Jul 2007

A Simple Model Of Interest Rate Term Structure, Tom Arnold

Finance Faculty Publications

Without much technical expertise, a yield curve model is presented that is very dynamic and can be easily programmed in Excel for classroom presentation or for assignments. By using the output of the model to have students find embedded rates within the yield curve, a discussion of how bond traders speculate on interest rates emerges very easily. Further, the model output can also be used for numerous exercises including the pricing of strips or for evaluating the positions of an entire bond portfolio. Within the exercises, the dynamic nature of the model can be exploited to provide sensitivity analysis.

Subprime Refinancing: Equity Extraction And Mortgage Termination, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Souphala Chomsisengphet Jul 2007

Subprime Refinancing: Equity Extraction And Mortgage Termination, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Souphala Chomsisengphet

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

This article examines the choice of borrowers to extract wealth from housing in the high-cost (subprime) segment of the mortgage market and assesses the prepayment and default performance of these cash-out refinance loans relative to the rate of refinance loans. Consistent with survey evidence, the propensity to extract equity is sensitive to the relative interest rates of other forms of consumer debt. After the loan is originated, results indicate that cash-out refinances perform differently from non-cash-out refinances. For example, cash-outs are less likely to default or prepay, and the termination of cash-outs is more sensitive to changing interest rates and …

Who We Are Drives What We Do: The Interplay Of Identity On Workplace Behaviors, Monika L. Hudson

Student Scholarship

This empirical study is designed to examine issues associated with who people believe they are and the effect that that has on how they behave. Specifically, it considers the separate and combined effect of three individually focused identity constructs-organizational, ethnic, and professional identity--on workplace behaviors perceived by the person or significant others as being either socially desirable or deviant. The behaviors are examined from the perspective of whether they are directed toward fellow employees or the work institution itself. The paper also considers whether two dimensions of organizational culture moderate the identity-influenced expressions of particular behaviors. Information was gathered from …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study draws on depth interviews with 49 managers in customer firms and 55 managers in supplier firms and on discussions with 21 managers in two focus groups to propose a new way of thinking about customer solutions. Extant literature and suppliers interviewed for this study view a solution as a customized and integrated combination of goods and services for meeting a customer's business needs. In contrast, customers view a solution as a set of customerâ€supplier relational processes comprising (1) customer requirements definition, (2) customization and integration of goods and/or services and (3) their deployment, and (4) postdeployment customer support, …

International Venturing By Emerging Economy Firms: The Effects Of Firm Capabilities, Home Country Networks, And Corporate Entrepreneurship, Daphne W. Yiu, Chungming Lau, Garry D. Bruton Jul 2007

International Venturing By Emerging Economy Firms: The Effects Of Firm Capabilities, Home Country Networks, And Corporate Entrepreneurship, Daphne W. Yiu, Chungming Lau, Garry D. Bruton

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Past literature on foreign direct investment generally supports an economics perspective that there is a direct relationship between firm-specific ownership advantages and international expansion. However, in emerging economies, with their institutional environment context characterized by low resource munificence and continuous economic liberalization, a theoretical extension of the current perspective is needed. This paper introduces new parameters by focusing on specific ownership advantages and strategic actions that firms have to develop in response to the institutional characteristics of the emerging economies when they decide to pursue outward FDI. The focus here is on international venturing that requires a firm to engage …

The Evolution And Utilization Of The Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement Mechanism, Pao-Li Chang Jul 2007

The Evolution And Utilization Of The Gatt/Wto Dispute Settlement Mechanism, Pao-Li Chang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper provides a theoretical framework of dispute settlement to explain the surge in blocking incidence of GATT panel reports during the 1980s and the variations in withdrawn incidence versus total disputes across different decades of the GATT regime. The study first suggests the role of the degree of legal controversy over a panel ruling in determining countries' incentives to block (appeal) a panel report under the GATT (WTO) regime. The study then analyzes the effects of political power on countries' incentives to use, and their interactions in using, the dispute settlement mechanism, when two-sided asymmetric information exists regarding panel …

Climate. Scrubbing The Sky: Climate Change And The Productive Center, Marcy Murninghan

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article sketches out the efforts of government, business, and civil society to address the problem of climate change. It identifies some of the key initiatives underway — including proposals for more stringent caps on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; the creation of a market-based trading system that provides incentives and profits for entities that reduce their GHG emission levels; more robust research and development of alternative energy sources as well as new approaches to traditional ones; and continued public education — and portrays the bipartisan, collaborative, multilateral nature of saving Mother Nature. While acknowledging that ultimately these efforts may be …

Mediators Of The Leader-Member Exchange And Performance Relationship, Kurt L. Oborn Jul 2007

Mediators Of The Leader-Member Exchange And Performance Relationship, Kurt L. Oborn

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The relationship of leader-member exchange (LMX) to task and contextual performance was examined using a sample of teleworkers. Path analysis results show evidence for mediation of the LMX and task performance and LMX and contextual performance relationships. Mediators and partial-mediators included self-management, telework satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intentions. LMX is not related to work-family conflict, and work-family conflict is not related to either task or contextual performance. Additional relationships among the mediating variables were also found. This study shows the importance of the leader-member relationship when leading teleworkers. More research is required to further understand differences between teleworkers and …

Integrating Employment Contracts And Comparisons: What One Can Teach Us About The Other, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Jonathon R. B. Halbesleben, John C. Edwards Jul 2007

Integrating Employment Contracts And Comparisons: What One Can Teach Us About The Other, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Jonathon R. B. Halbesleben, John C. Edwards

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This study examines the events that trigger individuals to consider the social exchanges involved in their employment relationships. Integrating social comparison and psychological contract literature streams, a parallel is drawn between system-referent comparisons and psychological contract evaluations. We hypothesize that self- and other-referent comparisons may be human triggers for engaging in this type of comparison. A variety of structural triggers are also proposed to influence psychological contract evaluations. This field study examines these primary and secondary contract makers as social comparison triggers. Results support the hypotheses that the triggers identified predict psychological contract evaluation and that psychological contract …

Building National Digital Infrastructure: A Case Study Of Semiconductor Complex Limited, Deepak Kappor Jul 2007

Building National Digital Infrastructure: A Case Study Of Semiconductor Complex Limited, Deepak Kappor

Business Review

The digital revolution and the rapid technology developments thereafter created a real danger of the modem world getting divided into a new type of 'digital-haves and digital-have not's'. It was feared that developing countries like India may not be able to reap the benefits of the 'information age' because of the ever widening gap in technology and relevant infrastructure. As a strategic step to bridge the growing digital divide between India and the technologically advanced economies, the Government of India (GO I) decided to set up Semiconductor Complex Limited (SCL) in the year 1983 to develop Indian capabilities in the …

The Drivers And Barriers To Customer Value Creation: Issues And Prespectives In The Marble Sector Smes Of North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan, Muhammad Noman

Business Review

The concept of value and, more specifically, customer value is of increasing interest to both academics and practitioners. Many see it as the next source of competitive advantage. Like other regions of the country, the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan has a presence of SMEs in many sectors. A major one amongst these is the marble sector; characterized by two sub-sectors, marble mining and marble processing. A review of various studies in the marble sector reveals that about 70 percent of marble reserves in Pakistan are being wasted due to poor mining and processing techniques. The situation is further aggravated …

Conflicting Paradigms: Alternative Islamic Approaches To Some Business Ethics, Javed A. Ansari, S. Zeeshan Arshad Jul 2007

Conflicting Paradigms: Alternative Islamic Approaches To Some Business Ethics, Javed A. Ansari, S. Zeeshan Arshad

Business Review

This paper contrasts orthodox and revisionist Islamic approaches to an evaluation of ethical issues related to capitalist marketing, employee management relationships and finance. It argues that while the orthodox Islamic ethical paradigm is fundamentally oppositional to capitalism revisionist discourses provide an Islamic legitimation of capitalist order and can provide an ideological framework for subsuming Islamic economy and society within global capitalism.

Book Review Of: Ansari, J. A. And Arshad, S.Z, Business Ethics On Pakistan, Sara Khan Jul 2007

Book Review Of: Ansari, J. A. And Arshad, S.Z, Business Ethics On Pakistan, Sara Khan

Business Review

The focus on Pakistan and inclusion of Islamic ethical concepts makes this work very relevant to Pakistani business students who generally resort to Western texts for understanding the subject of ethics in a corporate society. Very often the books, such as Post et al's (2002) Business and Society, present only a Western, predominantly an American, point of view of the ethical side of business issues. Even books that make an effort to give a more international coverage of the topic, such as, Velasquez's (2006) Business Ethics, largely ignore the Muslim perspective and Islamic view. This deeply felt shortcoming has been …

An Examination Of Online Product Comparison Service: Fit Between Product Type And Disposition Style, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, W. Hong, L. Chen, H. Lee Jul 2007

An Examination Of Online Product Comparison Service: Fit Between Product Type And Disposition Style, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, W. Hong, L. Chen, H. Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Horizontal and vertical disposition styles are two main formats used in product comparison service on e-commerce websites. In this research, we hypothesize that there is a fit between product type (‘think’ vs. ‘feel’ product) and disposition style (horizontal vs. vertical style), where horizontal disposition style is more appropriate for ‘feel’ products and vertical disposition style is a better fit for ‘think’ products. An experiment will be carried out to test the hypotheses.
