The Effect Of Downsizing On Attrition Rates In The Department Of Defense (Dod), Tina M. Broas Mar 2007

The Effect Of Downsizing On Attrition Rates In The Department Of Defense (Dod), Tina M. Broas

Theses and Dissertations

Downsizing is an organizational activity designed to purposefully reduce the size of the organization by eliminating positions and jobs (Cascio, 1993:96). This business strategy has been used for many years in both the public and private sectors and is expected to continue. Downsizing has been shown to have an affect on the employees the organization retains, often termed survivors, and has been linked to increased turnover and decreased productivity and effectiveness. With the expected continuation of downsizing actions in the Department of Defense (DoD) and the possible affective reactions experienced by survivors, the intent of this research is to identify …

A Project Manager's Personal Attributes As Predictors For Success, Vhance V. Valencia Mar 2007

A Project Manager's Personal Attributes As Predictors For Success, Vhance V. Valencia

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine what personal attributes project managers (PMs) possess which leads them to project management success. Numerous attributes are identified in the literature through a variety of methods, but very few studies relate specific qualities to success. The traits identified in the literature were compiled and condensed into seven distinct skills and attributes: leadership ability, communication skill, decision making skill, administrative skill, coping ability, analytical thinking, and technical competence. A survey method was developed which involved the PM, to measure levels of each attribute, and the PM’s supervisor and project data, to provide a …

Management Versus Non-Management Knowledge Transfer From Training To Real Work Environments: A Meta-Analysis, Robert P. Toney Mar 2007

Management Versus Non-Management Knowledge Transfer From Training To Real Work Environments: A Meta-Analysis, Robert P. Toney

Theses and Dissertations

This study reviewed 78 articles from previous research to investigate the effects of factors in the organizational environment on training transfer. A meta-analysis was performed with training transfer as a dependent variable and post-training independent variables of supervisor support, subordinate support, peer support, workplace support/transfer climate, relapse prevention, goal setting, continuous learning culture, task constraints, and frequency of use. In addition, analysis of differences in the relationship of these variables with training transfer based on training type (management versus non-management training) was conducted. Results of the meta-analysis revealed training transfer sample-weighted means effect sizes were largest for relapse prevention (d …

Real Options As A Stragetic Management Framework: A Case Study Of The Operationally Responsive Space Initiative, Robert H. Mitchell Jr. Mar 2007

Real Options As A Stragetic Management Framework: A Case Study Of The Operationally Responsive Space Initiative, Robert H. Mitchell Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to examine the potential for applying the concept of real options to the DoD acquisition system. The key premise of real options is the application of strategic decision making and flexibility in the face of future uncertainties. This thesis sought to answer three research questions, how could real options be applied to the acquisition system, how could the acquisition system benefit, and what are the potential challenges to implementation within the acquisition system. These research questions were addressed through a comprehensive literature and a case study of the Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) initiative. The …

A Multi-Objective Decision-Making Model For Resources Allocation In Humanitarian Relief, Seungbae Park Mar 2007

A Multi-Objective Decision-Making Model For Resources Allocation In Humanitarian Relief, Seungbae Park

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the critical resource allocation in the initial days of a disaster relief operation. One of the most important and essential components of relief operations is the allocation of scarce resources to accomplish the relief efforts. Every operation for disaster relief needs various critical resources whether they are personnel, equipment, supplies, or simply finances. Several research efforts for disaster relief have suggested methods to allocate scarce resources across a variety of competing objectives and programs in a disaster relief operation. Many of those efforts focused on optimizing a mathematical programming model subject to budget constraints. However, capturing the …

Fairness From The Top: Perceived Procedural Justice And Collaborative Problem Solving In New Product Development, John B. Bingham, Haiyang Li, Elizabeth E. Umphress Mar 2007

Fairness From The Top: Perceived Procedural Justice And Collaborative Problem Solving In New Product Development, John B. Bingham, Haiyang Li, Elizabeth E. Umphress

Faculty Publications

The literature on new product development has examined several important determinants of collaboration among project members. However, we are not aware of any study that links top management decisions with project members’ collaborative behavior. To address this significant gap, this study examines how perceived procedural justice in top management decisions regarding new products is related to collaborative problem solving among new product development project members. Our results from 109 technology firms—as well as from 91 student-based project groups—suggest that perceived procedural justice in top management decisions is positively related to collaborative problem solving among project members, and that collaborative problem …

Organizational Identity And Employer Image: Towards A Unifying Framework, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye, Frederik Anseel Mar 2007

Organizational Identity And Employer Image: Towards A Unifying Framework, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye, Frederik Anseel

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study aims to bridge two research streams that have evolved relatively apart from each other, namely the research streams on organizational identity and on employer branding (employer image). In particular, we posit that it is crucial to examine which factors company outsiders (applicants) as well as company insiders (employees) associate with a given employer. To this end, this study uses the instrumental-symbolic framework to study factors relating to both employer image and organizational identity of the Belgian Army. Two samples are used: a sample of 258 Army applicants and a sample of 179 military employees. Results show that both …

Public Disclosure And Private Decisions: The Case Of Equity Market Execution Quality, Ekkehart Boehmer, Robert Jennings, Li Wei Mar 2007

Public Disclosure And Private Decisions: The Case Of Equity Market Execution Quality, Ekkehart Boehmer, Robert Jennings, Li Wei

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In 2001, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) required market centers to publish monthly execution-quality reports in an effort to spur competition for order flow between markets. Using samples of stocks trading on several markets, we investigate whether past execution quality affects order-routing decisions and whether the new disclosure requirements influence this relationship. We find that routing decisions are associated with execution quality; markets reporting low execution costs and fast fills subsequently receive more orders. Moreover, the reports themselves appear to provide information that was unavailable previously. Our results are consistent with active competition for order flow that can be …

Evaluating Dynamic Performance: The Influence Of Salient Gestalt Characteristics On Performance Ratings, Jochen Reb, Russell Cropanzano Mar 2007

Evaluating Dynamic Performance: The Influence Of Salient Gestalt Characteristics On Performance Ratings, Jochen Reb, Russell Cropanzano

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

It is well recognized that performance changes over time. However, the effect of these changes on overall assessments of performance is largely unknown. In a laboratory experiment, we examined the influence of salient Gestalt characteristics of a dynamic performance profile on supervisory ratings. We manipulated performance trend (flat, linear-improving, linear-deteriorating, U-shaped, and ∩-shaped), performance variation (small, large), and performance mean (negative, zero, positive) within subjects and display format (graphic, tabular) between subjects. Participants received and evaluated information about the weekly performance of different employees over a simulated 26-week period. Results showed strong main effects on performance ratings of both performance …

A Comparison Of Cross Training Policies In Different Job Shops, Kum Khiong Yang Mar 2007

A Comparison Of Cross Training Policies In Different Job Shops, Kum Khiong Yang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This research compares a set of cross-training policies represented by different numbers of cross-trained workers, additional skills per cross-trained worker, and additional machines. The policies are evaluated in job shops, represented by different efficiency losses, labour utilization, variability in processing times, and worker absenteeism. Our results show that adding one machine in each department and cross-training one or two workers from each department with one additional skill is generally sufficient to realize most of the benefits of cross-training. Cross-training is thus beneficial in most job shops, unless the cost of the minimal training and spare machines is high. Our results …

A Cautionary Note On The Effects Of Range Restriction On Predictor Intercorrelations, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens, Christopher M. Berry, Richard N. Landers Mar 2007

A Cautionary Note On The Effects Of Range Restriction On Predictor Intercorrelations, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens, Christopher M. Berry, Richard N. Landers

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The purpose of this research report is to highlight a unique set of issues that arise when considering the effects of range restriction in the context of estimating predictor intercorrelations. Three approaches are used to illustrate the issue: simulation, a concrete applied example, and a reanalysis of a meta-analysis of ability-interview correlations. The general conclusion is that a predictor intercorrelation can differ dramatically from the population value when both predictors are used in a composite that is used operationally for selection. The compensatory nature of a composite means that low scorers on one predictor can only obtain high scores on …

Book Review Of "The World’S Newest Profession: Management Consulting In The Twentieth Century", Timothy Adrian Robert Clark Mar 2007

Book Review Of "The World’S Newest Profession: Management Consulting In The Twentieth Century", Timothy Adrian Robert Clark

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Management consultants are a significant social and economic force. Few people, whether as citizens or members oforganizations, will have escaped the impact of their interventions. A survey revealed that 97 percent of the top 200 companies in the U.K. and U.S. have used management consultants. The spectacular growth of the industry in the last fiftyyears is evidenced by the fact that somewhere in the regionof 80 percent of firms currently operating were establishedafter 1980. The ratio of consultants to managers, as this bookdemonstrates, has grown from one to a hundred in 1965 toone to thirteen in 1995. In this clearly …

An Examination Of Strategies For Encouraging Feedback Interest After Career Assessment, Frederik Anseel, Filip Lievens Mar 2007

An Examination Of Strategies For Encouraging Feedback Interest After Career Assessment, Frederik Anseel, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examines how feedback interest after career assessment can be influenced by changing individuals' beliefs about the importance and modifiability of the various performance dimensions. In an experiment, 82 master students completed a computerized assessment tool developed for assessing managerial potential. Results showed that participants in the experimental condition were more interested in feedback about important dimensions as opposed to unimportant dimensions and were more interested in feedback about nonmodifiable dimensions as opposed to modifiable dimensions. These findings might assist career counselors and organizations in designing strategies that direct feedback interest toward performance dimensions that are most important for …

Use Of Interpretive Schemes And Successful Adaptation: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Immigrant Churches In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan Mar 2007

Use Of Interpretive Schemes And Successful Adaptation: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Immigrant Churches In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan

Student Scholarship

How religious congregations adapt to change determines whether they will continue to thrive (Ammerman, 1997). Chinese immigrant religious organizations in America face a built-in clash between overseas-born and American-born generations that is usually visible in their religious congregations (Ling & Cheuk, 1999). This study identifies interpretive schemes (Bartunek, 1984) used by Chinese congregations that help ease the generational transition and lead to or hinder successful adaptation.

How Do Leaders' Values Influence Employees' Commitment To Their Organizations? A Qualitative Study, Barbara Clemenson Mar 2007

How Do Leaders' Values Influence Employees' Commitment To Their Organizations? A Qualitative Study, Barbara Clemenson

Student Scholarship

In the worlds of both practice and scholarship, people are focusing on the importance of leaders' values and authentic actions to the ethical operations of their organizations. At the same time, enterprises are struggling to attract and retain talented employees. Our qualitative research analyzed the values of leaders in seven different organizations--for profit, nonprofit, and public institutions--and compared their self-proclaimed values with their employees' perceptions of them and of their values. We focused specifically on leaders' values concerning their followers, and examined the impact that leaders' value content and integrity had on employees' commitment to their establishment, and to their …

Releasing Individually Identifiable Microdata With Privacy Protection Against Stochastic Threat: An Application To Health Information, Robert Garfinkel, Ram Gopal, Steven M. Thompson Feb 2007

Releasing Individually Identifiable Microdata With Privacy Protection Against Stochastic Threat: An Application To Health Information, Robert Garfinkel, Ram Gopal, Steven M. Thompson

Management Faculty Publications

The ability to collect and disseminate individually identifiable microdata is becoming increasingly important in a number of arenas. This is especially true in health care and national security, where this data is considered vital for a number of public health and safety initiatives. In some cases legislation has been used to establish some standards for limiting the collection of and access to such data. However, all such legislative efforts contain many provisions that allow for access to individually identifiable microdata without the consent of the data subject. Furthermore, although legislation is useful in that penalties are levied for violating the …

Acquisition Of Operations Capability: A Model And Test Across Us And European Firms, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Jayanth Jayaram, Ram Narasimhan Feb 2007

Acquisition Of Operations Capability: A Model And Test Across Us And European Firms, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Jayanth Jayaram, Ram Narasimhan

Management Faculty Publications

In this paper, a three-factor model of operations capability is presented which, unlike previous studies that view capability as an outcome, examines the drivers of capability acquisition. The model proposes that capability acquisition is a function of an organization's commitment to the principles of quality management, just-in-time practices, and effective new product development processes. Furthermore, the paper proposes that these underlying facets of capability acquisition are common across geographic boundaries. The model is tested using data drawn from US and European companies. Results not only provide support for the three-factor model, but also for the invariance of the model and …

Optimal Scheduling Models For Ferry Companies Under Alliances, Shangyao Yan, Chia-Hung Chen, Hsin-Yen Chen, Tze-Chiang Lou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Ferry companies in Taiwan increasingly ally themselves with other ferry companies as a means of forming more complete networks, to operate more efficiently. The more complex ferry fleet routing and scheduling processes are not only important in each company’s operations, but also have a bearing on the alliance. In this research, we employ network flow techniques to construct several coordinated scheduling models to help solve for the most satisfactory schedules for the allied ferry companies. Finally, we perform a case study based on real operating data from two Taiwan ferry companies to evaluate the models. The preliminary results show that …

Leading With Timeless Values In Turbulent Times (Toronto), C. William Pollard Feb 2007

Leading With Timeless Values In Turbulent Times (Toronto), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech, Pollard asks whether institutions such as Worldvision can uphold "timeless values" in a pluralistic society. He goes on to contend that they can if only managers see themselves as being moral as well as corporate leaders.
