Keynote: On Organizational Accidents, Dr. Abdul Raouf

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

The paper deals with accidents causing organizational failure. A comparison between the two different types of accidents, organizational and personal, is provided. Examples of organizational disasters in history, along with the contributing factors are presented. A model describing the `anatomy' of organizational accidents is presented. The model provides the factors causing barrier failure. Concepts of Reliability Engineering are provided to determine Process availability. Process Availability is essential to meet the process demand rate. Increased process demand is likely to cause additional stress on workers thus resulting in unsafe acts.

Some of the factors that contributed to the creation of double entry bookkeeping were techniques in math, the invention of coins and money as a medium of exchange, the introduction of paper, the development of a banking system, and various economic conditions that required a system of proper recording. At times, the world of sport offers its fans moral and ethical questions of a formidable nature rivaling the questions pondered by medieval theologians. For example, who is morally more reprehensible: a baseball player who assaults a television cameraman or one who takes steroids after denying under oath that he had never taken steroids. Whose transgression is worse: a football player who fails a drug test or a hockey player who in a premeditated action assaults a fellow player with a sucker punch from behind, drives his head into the ice, and breaks his neck?

The NCAA, in whatever wisdom it may have remaining, has ruled that NCAA institutions who have "offensive and abusive" mascots and logos will not be allowed to host any post-season event nor participate in any post-season event while displaying such a logo or mascot. Eighteen universities have been named in this group. This is a ruling that has been a long time coming and one that represents many of the problems with organizations like the NCAA.

This research is motivated by the fact that there is a paucity of research on the earnings management practices of banks in Australia. Research on the practices of North American, European and Asian banks provided conflicting evidence. In this study, we examine whether Australian banks engage in earnings, capital management and signalling, and, if so, the extent to which loan loss provisions (LLPs) are used for this purpose. Our results indicate that banks in Australia use loan loss provisions to manage earnings. Further, listed commercial banks engage more aggressively in earnings management using LLPs than other banks. Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

Three experiments examined how the presence of a neck rail at different heights and locations influenced dairy cattle behavior and stall cleanliness. Experiment 1 compared 4 levels of neck-rail height (102, 114, and 127 cm and no neck rail; presented at 160 or 180 cm from the curb) in a preference test. Cows (n = 10) showed no consistent preference based on neck-rail height, regardless of the horizontal position of the neck rail. When cows were restricted to each treatment in turn, however, time spent standing fully (with all 4 hooves) in the stall was least in the stall with …

In late 1987, the Minister approved a development plan for the South Coast Inshore Trawl Fishery (Fisheries Management Paper No. 13) and made a number of notices regulating trawling activities in the Recherche Archipelago. Fishing Boat Licences were subsequently ‘endorsed’ by reference to those notices. The development plan was declared to be for a period ending 31 December 1989, subject to extension for a further year if necessary. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the benefit needs of public golf course consumer. Ten participants with various demographic backgrounds were interviewed concerning their; a) golf skills, b) frequency of participation, c) playing behavior, d) benefit thoughts, and e) preferences of a public golf course. The conceptions that emerged from the participants' benefit needs in golf included: a) satisfaction, b) achievement, and c) well-being. The subconceptions, referred to as categories in this study associated with satisfaction were enjoyment, convenience, and the cost they accrue for each individual and include all satisfying psychological outcomes related to golf.
