The Effects Of Malpractice Tort Reform On Defensive Medicine, Katherine D. Hennesy, Heather M. O'Neill

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Positive defensive medicine occurs when physicians order additional tests or procedures primarily to avoid malpractice liability. This paper shows the degree of defensive medicine occurring across states is related to the malpractice environment in the states. As the environment changes due to malpractice tort reform, defensive medicine practices also change. This paper shows the existence of positive defensive medicine and how it adds to total health care expenditures for head trauma victims in 23 states in 2000. Moreover, given different malpractice environments across states, we witness variations in defensive medicine practices leading to differences in health care expenditures.

This paper uses a case study approach to analyze the Third Extrusion Project (TEP) in Cerro Matoso S.A (CMSA). The TEP was chosen to be analyzed because of the importance to the company, the quality of the project management, and the impact in CMSA’s business. The analysis was focused on the managerial and organizational aspects, rather than on technical topics. It was based on the Strategic Project Leadership framework proposed by Dr. Aaron Shedar.

In a recent paper Oldroyd (2003) explored the idea, first gaining ground in the 19th century, that a time once existed in prehistory when society was universally matriarchal, and counting and calculation were the exclusive preserves of women. Despite the extreme antiquity of the subject, making proof difficult, there is some supporting evidence. The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) is Ireland’s centre of excellence for supply chain management (SCM). As part of its mission to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish business, it designs and delivers executive modular learning programmes. To create a dynamic, exciting library and museum, which will be an asset to both Western Kentucky University and the community at large, a number of changes in our normal operations need to take place. The problems are each addressed below; storage, new gallery space, new exhibits, and new operating procedures to better meet the needs of the community and the campus. This plan will address each aspect of the anticipated changes, and set some priorities. All changes described will be consistent with the strategic plans of the University Libraries and Western Kentucky University.

This two-day congress of accountants was held in September, 1904 during the St. Louis International Exposition. The importance of the congress for the federation of certified accountants across the United States is here confirmed. But the opportunities and intellectual challenges exposed at St. Louis, as at earlier European expositions, featured little for these pragmatic practitioners. More seriously for those claiming that an international accounting congress series began at St. Louis, an examination of its planning, agenda and participation reveals an Anglo-Saxon bias which was natural for that time. Barramundi nutrition research has been undertaken since 1988. Since that time the requirements for most nutrients, energy demand, ingredient utilisation and the effects of nutrition on flesh quality aspects have all been examined to varying extents.

Optimal protein content of diets has been shown to vary with diet energy density and also the size of fish which are being fed. Most studies have suggested a protein requirement from 45% to 55%. For small fish a protein to energy ratio of 25 to 30 g/MJ is suggested. Limited work has been done on fish larger than 500 g. The 10 essential …

Technical Note: Comparative Static Analysis Of Information Value In A Canonical Decision Problem, Jeffrey Keisler

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

To gain insight into the behavior of the value of information, this paper identifies specific rules for a canonical decision problem: the two-act linear loss decision with normal prior probability distributions. Conditions are derived for which the expected value of perfect information increases when mean and standard deviation are both linear functions of an exogenous variable. A variety of richer decision problems can be adapted to the problem, so that the general results obtained here can be immediately applied to understand drivers of information value.

The Dynamics Of Market Entry: The Effects Of Mergers And Acquisitions On Entry In The Banking Industry, Allen N. Berger, Seth D. Bonime, Lawrence G. Goldberg, Lawrence J. White

We study the dynamics of market entry following mergers and acquisitions (M&As) using banking industry data. The findings suggest that M&As are associated with statistically and economically significant increases in the probability of entry. The data suggest that M&As affect the proportion of the markets with entry by about 10-20%. These findings also suggest that entry may be part of an "external" effect of M&As that helps supply credit to some relationship-dependent small business borrowers. Our results are robust to the use of alternative econometric methods, changes in specifications of the exogenous variables, and alteration of the data samples.

Much debate in the early nineties centered on whether the federal entitlement program Aid for Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) reduced welfare dependency. Many contend that AFDC discouraged work, increased welfare dependency, and undermined the institution of family. Partly in response to these criticisms, welfare was reformed through the Personal Responsibility and Work Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) in 1996. PRWORA modified the primary objectives of welfare by placing more emphasis on work experience accumulation and less on human capital accumulation. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) was designed to meet this primary objective. Washington State’s TANF program, WorkFirst, utilizes a progressive …

Crisis Planning In The Lodging Industry: A Response To The “It Can’T Happen To Us” Mentality, John E. Spillan, William Crandall

Although the crisis management literature addressing the needs of larger organizations is plentiful, little has been written on this subject concerning the lodging industry. This study examines the perceptions and experiences with crisis events among hotel and motel owners/managers located throughout U.S.In particular, we investigate if concern is generated more from the occurrence of a crisis event or from the presence of a crisis management team. The findings reveal that of the lodging facilities surveyed, 59.8%of the 174 respondents indicated they have a crisis management team, and 74% experienced a crisis of some type within the last three years.This study …
