Faster Ethernet And The Atm Market Boundary, G. Kent Webb
Faster Ethernet And The Atm Market Boundary, G. Kent Webb
Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology
As a network technology, ethernet flourished in low-cost, low-end markets. Simple to make and with open standards, many companies created products. The resulting improvement in price, performance, and market acceptance resulted in ethernet replacing the more established and sophisticated token-ring technology that dominated early large corporate LANs. As ethernet gets faster, accelerating from the original 10 Mbps into Gigabit speeds, the technology is poised to challenge the dominant backbone and WAN standard, ATM. A discussion of new ethernet developments is formalized with a decision model used to define a market boundary with data illustrating why and where a technology may …

Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Rigorous experimentation is emerging as the preferred method for validating the benefits of protocols, especially those affecting quality of service. The emulation of traffic generators provides a compact and efficient method for testing protocols and techniques in a realistic context. Models of user behavior serve as the basis for the trafgen traffic emulator and are subject to refinement as our knowledge expands. The project in this study uses a layered approach to study different Internet applications and protocols including the hypertext transfer protocol, http.

Its aim was to provide the readers with an overview of this market and outline distribution and communication strategies that manufacturers and retailers can use to attract this market to make their business grow. Until a few years ago, the fashion industry did not pursue this market. In stores, most brands were dividing their clothing range into three catagories, women, men, and children. Supplier Selection And Assessment: Their Impact On Business Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan
Management Faculty Publications
Increasingly, firms are allocating more resources to their core competencies and encouraging the outsourcing of non-core activities, which increases their reliance and dependence on suppliers. This increases the importance of effective supplier selection and assessment. Sparse evidence exists regarding the impact of supplier selection and assessment on a buying firm's business performance. This research describes an empirical study of the importance of supplier selection and assessment criteria of American manufacturing companies for items to be used in products already in production. Moreover, it identifies relationships between criteria and a buying firm's business performance. Results indicate that soft, non-quantifiable selection criteria, …
The Incidence Of Agricultural Policy, Julian M. Alston, Jennifer S. James
The Incidence Of Agricultural Policy, Julian M. Alston, Jennifer S. James
Agribusiness
This chapter first discusses what economists mean by "the incidence of agricultural policy" and why we care about it. Then it reviews models of the determinants of the differential incidence of different policies among interest groups such as suppliers of factors of production, consumers, middlemen, taxpayers, and others. Results are represented in terms of Marshallian economic surplus, and surplus transformation curves. After reviewing the results from standard models under restrictive assumptions, certain assumptions are relaxed in order to analyze the effects of imperfect supply controls, variability, cheating and imperfect enforcement of policies, and the dynamics of supply.
The Meaning Of Property Rights: Law Versus Economics? , Daniel H. Cole, Peter Z. Grossman
The Meaning Of Property Rights: Law Versus Economics? , Daniel H. Cole, Peter Z. Grossman
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
Property rights are fundamentals to economic analysis. There is, however, no consensus in the economic literature about what property rights are. Economists define them variously and inconsistently, sometimes in ways that deviate from the conventional understandings of legal scholars and judges. This article explores ways in which definitions of property rights in the economic literature diverge from conventional legal understandings, and how those divergences can create interdisciplinary confusion and bias economic analyses. Indeed, some economists' idiosyncratic definitions of property rights, if used to guide policy, could lead to suboptimal economic outcomes.

Modeling Xbrl Using Uml: Improving Semantics For Financial Analysis, Vijayan Sugumaran, Joseph Callaghan, Arline Savage
Modeling Xbrl Using Uml: Improving Semantics For Financial Analysis, Vijayan Sugumaran, Joseph Callaghan, Arline Savage
Accounting
eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL), a financial accounting application of XML, provides a taxonomy for facilitating the analysis of financial statement information. This taxonomy promises to enhance the financial analyst‘s ability to process financial information both cross-sectionally and temporally. However, limitations exist in the taxonomy that inhibit the analyst, intelligent agent or application to process information in the most effective way. In particular, financial statement element analysis can only be properly conducted when the additional semantics provided by additional disclosures are incorporated into the process. UML provides a conceptual framework to capture more meaningful semantics, particularly among related, collaborating objects. …

Corporate Training Assessment Technique: Risk Factors Associated With Misappropriation Of Assets, Carolyn A. Strand, Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, Jerry Thorne
Accounting
Due to rapid advances in technology, companies are spending record amounts of money on training as they seek to increase employee skills (Armour 1999). Because managers believe that corporate fraud is a growing problem, an important skill for all employees should be the ability to recognize the risk factors that are frequently associated with fraud. A number of instructional cases have been developed that focus on the problems of employee fraud and unethical management practices. Training materials and professional standards now include more detailed information on the subject of fraud and the auditor's responsibility, as well as management's responsibility, with …

Tax Fairness In Eleventh Century England, John Mcdonald
Accounting Historians Journal
Alongside the Roman census from Augustus' time and the ecclesiastical surveys or polyptychs of the 8th and 9th century Carolingian kingdoms, the Domesday Survey of 1086 occupies a most significant place in accounting history. Domesday Book, the outcome of the Survey, lists the incomes, tax assessments, wealth and resources of most estates in England and was used as a working accounting document by the monarch and public officials to raise taxes, distribute resources and consolidate power. Although the Domesday document itself survives, many details of its construction and use have been lost in the mists of time. This paper describes …
