Faculty Publications, School of Management

Today' s increasingly competitive environment has prompted many fim1S to view organizational cost control as a strategic initiative through programs such as advantageous cost structure. Although strategic costing has been a concern of managers at the strategic level, finns are now trying to find ways to implement strategic initiatives at the operational level as well. These initiatives force organizations to address their major cost drivers and often result in improved processes, reduced number of non-value-added activities, improved supplier relations, and increased productivity. This article offers a case study of a large multinational manufacturing company that has successfully implemented advantageous cost …

Flowers For The World: Developing A Business Game To Support The Teaching Of Is Concepts, Trevor T. Moores, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang

Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research

One of the key problems in teaching fundamental concepts in information systems is how to ground the theory in experiences that the students can relate to. To overcome this problem, a business game called Flowers For The World has been developed and used across a wide variety of IS courses. This paper will describe the game and the result of using it for a 300-level course in analysis and design. The possibility exists that the game could be developed to provide a common business foundation across all business school curricula.

Managerial Accountants, The Equity Theory, Job Satisfaction, And Intent To Leave, Philip N. Gilmore Jan 2001

Managerial Accountants, The Equity Theory, Job Satisfaction, And Intent To Leave, Philip N. Gilmore

Faculty Dissertations

This research measures the relationships among variables of equity, job satisfaction, and intent to leave for managerial accountants. An accountant may be comparing the equity of his/her situation with that of another (referent) or simply measuring his/her outcome (such as pay, etc.) to his/her own input (such as effort, etc.) on the job. Two hypotheses are supported. First, the correlation between managerial accountants' job satisfaction and job equity is positive. Second, the correlation between managerial accountants' job satisfaction and intent to leave the job is not positive. Employers of accountants are encouraged to review their personnel policies to ensure that …

Are There Rational Bubbles In The Us Stock Market? Overview And A New Test, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Ramaprasad Bhar

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A speculative bubble is usually defined as the difference between the market value of a security and its fundamental value. Although there are several important theoretical issues surrounding the topic of asset bubbles, the existence of bubbles is inherently an empirical issue that has not been settled yet. This paper reviews several important tests and offers one more methodology that improves upon the existing ones. The new test is applied to the annual US stock market data spanning over a century and at the monthly frequency covering the post-war period. Although we find evidence of stock price bubble in both …

Does Vanity Describe Other Cultures?: A Cross Cultural Examination Of The Vanity Scale, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, John Watson

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Vanity is a psychological construct that describes a person's excessive concern with physical appearance or achievement. A scale, recently developed to measure this construct, has been psychometrically validated using data from U.S. respondents. The goal of this paper is to determine if this scale can be used cross-culturally. If the scale has cross-cultural applicability, it can be used as a counseling device to guide and alert individuals to certain tendencies. The scale also can be used to track foreign cultures as they adopt a consumerism ethos more aligned to Western consumer culture. Based on data from 475 young adults in …

Identification Of Linkage Between Strategic Group And Performance Of Indian Commercial Banks: A Combined Approach Using Dea And Co-Plot, Prithwiraj Nath, Avinandan Mukherjee, Manabendra Nath

Marketing Faculty Research

This paper explores the linkage between strategic grouping and performance of the Indian banking sector. Strategic grouping and performance were identified using published financial information for all public sector banks. Grouping of Indian public sector banks following comparable financial strategy – with similar asset quality, operational efficiency and profitability was operationalized using the graphical display method of Co-plot.

From their position in the two dimensional conceptual map, banks with identical financial performance formed strategic groups with significant positive linkage between better groups and their superior financial performance, which showed their inherent homogeneity in business policy decisions. Relative performance of the …

Is The Federal Reserve Bank Stock Market Bubble-Neutral?, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Marc D. Hayford

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper argues that the Fed was not stock market bubble-neutral during the last several years. This nonneutrality implies two options: first, the Fed has used monetary policies to prevent the building of the stock market bubble or, second, the Fed has contributed to its development and subsequent deflation. We supply representative quotes from the FOMC transcripts to establish that the Fed has paid significant attention to the valuation of the stock market. These quotes confirm that the stock market’s valuation was an important variable in the Fed’s decision-making and its conduct of monetary policy. We also conduct econometric modeling, …

A System Design Framework For Project Cost Control In The Irish Construction Industry, Tomás Kelly Jan 2001

A System Design Framework For Project Cost Control In The Irish Construction Industry, Tomás Kelly

Masters

The construction industry is a major contributor to the Irish economy. The common denominator of the of the industry’s business is the “construction project”. Construction projects by their very nature are unique being influenced by many variables such as weather, location, design and personnel. This situation demands strong management to fulfil the cost control function. The primary aim of this project has been the illustration of a system design framework for project cost control in the Irish construction industry. This system design should be based upon a general principle identified for the design of an overall project management system. Whilst …

Working Up A Tan, Gerry Mortimer Jan 2001

Working Up A Tan, Gerry Mortimer

Case studies

Ann McLean looked down again at the brochure on her desk. The blue-eyed, white toothed blond, complete with her glowing tan, stared back at her. She opened the small A4 sized brochure and quickly scanned its contents. It was typical ‘Americanese’ and was obviously targeted at the beauty saloons and beauticians. It extolled the virtues of a tanning system called ‘Sunkissed’. She had promised her friend, Susan, that she would at least give her an indication later that week, of whether she was prepared to invest in a project to launch the tanning system in Ireland, and possibly the UK.

The Competence Trap: Exploring Issues In Winning And Sustaining Core Competence, Aidan O'Driscoll, David Carson, Audrey Gilmore

Articles

The organisational struggle to maintain and refine, yet also necessarily to renew and replace core capabilities, is a complex, and at times paradoxical, challenge. This paper reflects on this managerial task and on the difficulties and tensions inhering in its possible resolution. In sum, it asks how can the need to leverage competence for today be balanced with the requirement to build competence for tomorrow?

The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox Jan 2001

The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox

Articles

In Dublin city competition within the retail sector is intensifying and city-centre department stores, in common with other traders, face many challenges. Indigenous retailers must contend not only with each other, but also with an on-going invasion of international retailers who have been attracted by Ireland’s booming economy. UK multiples have made major in-roads into Dublin's retail scene and the city centre's latest shopping mall, The Jervis Centre, is so dominated by UK retailers that it has been christened 'Little Britain' In the past fifty years, many of Dublin's once dominant department stores have succumbed to the vagaries of retailing. …
