Payroll Tax Incidence: An Empirical Investigation Of Shifting The Payroll Tax Burden, Ted D. Englebrecht, Laurie J. Henry, Govind S. Iyer Jan 2001

Payroll Tax Incidence: An Empirical Investigation Of Shifting The Payroll Tax Burden, Ted D. Englebrecht, Laurie J. Henry, Govind S. Iyer

Accounting Faculty Publications

The payroll tax earmarked for the financing of social security benefits has been the leading growth tax on small businesses over the past few decades. Small businesses pay more in payroll tax than in any other form of tax. Indeed, these taxes are levied on small businesses irrespective of their profits. The statutory incidence of one-half of the payroll tax being paid by the employer and one-half by the employee may be very different from the actual incidence of the tax due to employer shifting mechanisms.

While there has been considerable conjecture about the shifting of the payroll tax burden, …

On-Line Tutorial Project: Intellectual Property In E-Commerce, William J. Murphy

Law Faculty Scholarship

Copyrights, Trademarks and Patents make up most of the area of law known as Intellectual Property. Intellectual Property's importance in Electronic Commerce is difficult to overstate. The Internet has been defined as a global network of networks through which computers communicate by sending information in packets, and each network consists of computers connected by cables or wireless links. It is the Intellectual Property laws of Copyright, Trademark and Patents that are attempting to harmonize the effects that E-Commerce and the Internet have had on the individual's ability to access and use this information. It should be remembered that most countries …

Making The Most Of Commercial Global Domains, Thomas G. Field Jr Jan 2001

Making The Most Of Commercial Global Domains, Thomas G. Field Jr

Law Faculty Scholarship

Despite echoing skepticism about the long-term prospects for commercial global domains based in part on how they are governed, this paper concludes that nominal addresses are essentially a new form of intellectual property, to be viewed and managed in ways sometimes fundamentally different from trademarks and other indicia of commercial goodwill. In support, the article first reviews the domain name system ("DNS") under which nominal addresses may be registered. The article then outlines central principles of unfair competition law underlying the resolution of disputes within the United States. Finally, the article reviews how nominal addresses pose several new kinds of …

Privacy And Consumer Agency In The Information Age: Between Prying Profilers And Preening Webcams, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Detlev Zwick Jan 2001

Privacy And Consumer Agency In The Information Age: Between Prying Profilers And Preening Webcams, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Detlev Zwick

College of Business Faculty Publications

This article is about the ability of the consumer to control his or her destiny in the new electronic marketspace. Two seemingly opposite phenomena – the need for privacy and the desire for exhibitionism and voyeurism – are vying for attention on the media landscape. We believe the simultaneous occurrence of privacy concerns and ultraexhibitionism is not coincidental. Indeed, exhibitionism and voyeurism seem to offer new tools for consumer resistance against the electronic surveillance systems in networked markets and are inextricably linked to consumers’ desire for control over their intimate personal information.

From E-Business Into The O-Zone: Development Of Optical Networks, G. Kent Webb Jan 2001

From E-Business Into The O-Zone: Development Of Optical Networks, G. Kent Webb

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

An increasing proportion of e-business and other network traffic moves over optical networks which provide higher capacity, speed, and security than electrical networks. An all optical network and even optical computing has been envisioned for 20 years, but technical characteristics of optical components have limited applications to the high end of networking, typically for speeds above 2.5 Gbps. While a fundamental advance in physics may be required for the implementation of an all-optical network, optics continues a steady advance into the network infrastructure. This paper describes the technical evolution of optical systems and examines the changing cost structure of optical …

Are The Fundamental Concepts Of Information Systems Mostly About Work Systems?, Steven Alter Jan 2001

Are The Fundamental Concepts Of Information Systems Mostly About Work Systems?, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Audience comments about a debate at ICIS200 [Alter et al., 2001] related to ebusiness and the fundamental concepts of information systems noted that the debate was undercut by the lack of agreement about what are the fundamental concepts. As a follow-on to that debate, this article proposes a set of fundamental concepts for information systems. While there is no bullet-proof way to prove that a particular set of concepts captures what is truly fundamental within a diverse and rapidly evolving field, the attempt to identify these concepts challenges the reader to ask “If this isn’t the way to identify fundamental …
