Counseling & Student Affairs Faculty Publications

Employee training programmes have long been considered one of the keys to corporate success. The elements of a successful training programme are discussed along with how the process can be adapted by colleges and universities. The distinction between training and education is explained, with a discussion of why 'soft skills' training initiatives are often less effective than skills-based approaches. Franchising From The Franchisee's Perspective, Marko Grunhagen, Robert A. Mittelstaedt

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The focus of this article is on the emergence and development of multi-unit franchising in the USA from the franchisee's perspective. After a historical summary of the development of franchising from a marketing viewpoint, a typology of different franchisee types is provided, and the multi-unit franchising paradox is presented. The article offers a discussion of reasons why individuals might be enticed to become multi-unit franchisees. Emphasis is placed on entrepreneurship as a possible motive for sequential owners' involvement as multi-unit franchisees. The article concludes by providing encouragement for future research to investigate the issue empirically.

It is based on a qualitative survey of both advertising industry experts and senior executives responsible for setting international strategy within the agencies themselves. A follow-up working paper in this series provides an in-depth assessment if tge strategic response of advertising agencies to these globalisation drivers. This initial paper presents the theoretical background and methodology of the overall study. A thorough …

Fuzzy Areas And Firm Boundaries, Pradeep Banerjee Jun 2001

Fuzzy Areas And Firm Boundaries, Pradeep Banerjee

IIMB Management Review

The manner in which firms function has been studied by academic economists for some time now. Adam Smith, the doyen of economists, incorporated his evaluation of producing units in his Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of Wealth of Nations (1776). The other famous economist, Alfred Marshal also studied the operation of the market and firms that functioned in it. Marshal is credited with having laid down an important part of the methodology of microeconomics, a branch of economics that takes up the study of firms as part of its routine.

Private Sector Banks : Shaping Up, Amol Maheshwari, Shweta Jhajharia Jun 2001

Private Sector Banks : Shaping Up, Amol Maheshwari, Shweta Jhajharia

IIMB Management Review

An important factor influencing the development of private banks was the presence in the early 90s of bothpublic sector banks (PSBs) andforeign banks, with their specificdisadvantages. While thePSBs were often wanting in their quality of service, the activities of foreign banks were (and still are) restricted by the government. Private banks thus cornered the niche where the service-demanding consumer was willing to pay a higher price. By developing a retail focus, they also ensured that their deposit base was firmly established and diversified enough, before they moved on to larger businesses.

Analysing Construction Risk : A Project Management Model, P K Dey Jun 2001

Analysing Construction Risk : A Project Management Model, P K Dey

IIMB Management Review

The success parameters for any project are ontime completion within the specific budget, and requisite performance or meeting the technical requirements. The main barriers to achievement are changes in the project environment. The problem multiplies with the size of the project. Large-scale construction projects are exposed to an uncertain environment because they are subject to such factors as planning and design complexity, presence of various interest groups (project owner, owner’s project group, consultants, contractors, vendors etc), availability of resources (materials, equipment, funds etc), climatic environment, the economic and political environment and statutory regulations. Other risk factors include the complexity of …

Equilibrium Spells Death : Applying Chaos Theory To Organisations, Saurav Mukherji Jun 2001

Equilibrium Spells Death : Applying Chaos Theory To Organisations, Saurav Mukherji

IIMB Management Review

Organisations have long been viewed as open systems consisting of inter-connected components having multiple levels of interdependencies that work together by exchanging resources within themselves and with the environment. Treating organisations as complex systems, organisational designers tried to match the structural complexity of organisations with a complex
environment and technology. However, in the light of some important discoveries in other fields regarding the nature of complex systems, it may be worthwhile to re-examine some of the basic assumptions made.

Consumer Self-Confidence: Refinements In Conceptualization And Measurement, William O. Bearden, David M. Hardesty, Randall L. Rose Jun 2001

Consumer Self-Confidence: Refinements In Conceptualization And Measurement, William O. Bearden, David M. Hardesty, Randall L. Rose

Faculty Publications

The development and validation of measures to assess multiple dimensions of consumer self-confidence are described in this article. Scale-development procedures resulted in a six-factor correlated model made up of the following dimensions: information acquisition, consideration-set formation, personal outcomes, social outcomes, persuasion knowledge, and marketplace interfaces. A series of studies demonstrate the psychometric properties of the measures, their discriminant validity with respect to related constructs, their construct validity, and their ability to moderate relationships among other important consumer behavior variables.

Local Development And The Creation Of The Enterprise Culture, Corrina Smart Jun 2001

Local Development And The Creation Of The Enterprise Culture, Corrina Smart

Masters

This thesis sets out to explore how cultural values of enterprise are negotiated between state sponsored bodies and their agents of limited economic, social and cultural capital, within a localised framework. More specifically, this qualitative research study centres the attention on one such government agency, namely the Northside Partnership, and investigates how this agency promotes and creates entrepreneurial activity within its catchment area; an area of high unemployment, social exclusion and marginalisation. A topical area of research, with limited knowledge and previous research opens up various avenues for this research study to explore. Data collection involves the administration of various …

Analysis Of The Financial Assurance Plan In The License Application For A Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility, F. Gregory Hayden, Scott Fullwiler

College of Business: Faculty Publications

Our purpose is to evaluate the efficiency of the financial assurance plan in the license application' submitted by American Ecology Corporation (AEC) to site, design, and build a new technological facility in Boyd County, Nebraska, for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW). Efficiency means the ability to accomplish desired effects. Thus, efficiency considerations begin with social beliefs and ethics in order to know what is desirable. "Ethics can be considered a system of guidance designed to assist in living within a society. . . . That we must live together installs the positive requirement of doing good for one …

Foreign Country Priorities In The Internationalization Process: A Measure And An Exploratory Test On British Firms, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh Jun 2001

Foreign Country Priorities In The Internationalization Process: A Measure And An Exploratory Test On British Firms, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Derek S. Pugh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

After a critical analysis of the psychic distance aspect of the Uppsala model of internationalization and empirical studies to test it, this paper proposes a measure to enable comparison between target foreign countries in the priority given them in the internationalization process. An International Priority Index is developed for each target country, and used as the dependent variable in a model to analyze the effects of the independent variables of size of market, affluence of market, geographical distance and cultural distance on foreign country priority choice of home country firms. The measure and the model are given a first test …

Coping With Growth Transitions: The Case Of Chinese Family Businesses In Singapore, Wee-Liang Tan, Siew Tong Fock Jun 2001

Coping With Growth Transitions: The Case Of Chinese Family Businesses In Singapore, Wee-Liang Tan, Siew Tong Fock

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Families control more than half of the corporations in East Asia. The contribution of family businesses to Asia's economic growth is predicated upon successfully growing their businesses. Many family businesses in East Asia, spanning countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, are Chinese owned and managed. Some claim that these businesses will never develop into full-fledged multinational enterprises because of their cultural heritage (Redding, 1990). However, some Chinese family businesses have successfully made the transition. This paper presents an in-depth study of five Chinese family businesses in Singapore that have successfully made the transition in growth and size …
