Accounting Historians Notebook

Integrating accounting history into the classroom is one way to motivate students in financial accounting courses, to help them gain an appreciation of the evolution of accounting, and to challenge them to conceptualize and think constructively [Bloom and Collins, 1988; Coffman et al., 1993]. This paper presents examples of some familiar and some unfamiliar business and accounting concepts as they were taught in the early-nineteenth century to help accounting students and faculty members to gain further insight into how today's practices evolved.

As often occurs when someone retires from a position, my predecessor, Jim Craig, left behind as many things as possible to ease the transition of his successor. Among the items that have waited patiently for my attention is a desk drawer filled with cassette tapes of past interviews and symposia. In this time of increasing uncertainty about business viability and stability, many organizations are looking to gain control of their "bottom line" by strengthening the link between organizational outcomes and employee rewards. Long gone are the days of steadily and automatically increasing worker salaries as a hoped-for method of expanding productivity. Indeed, there is a school of thought that suggests that automatic pay increases act as a "demotivator" for many individuals. IPED Technical Reports

This project brought together two issues that dominate policy debates in the southwestern U.S. and especially along the United States – Mexico Border; namely, environmental justice, and legal liabilities associated with adverse environmental actions. Both are major implementation problems. In the southwest the issue becomes more problematic as the two-nations meet face-to-face, and the maquiladora industry continues to expand, creating new burdens on an already stressed environment as a result of industrial practices that have not always meet U.S. environmental standards.

The Effects Of Cultural Values On Acceptance Of Human Resource Management Decisions, Ying Liu

The present study examined the effects of six culture values, including Hofstede's (1984, 1991) power distance, individualism/collectivism, long-term and short-term orientation, Trompenaars'1994) achievement/ascription, universalism/particularism, and relationship to nature, on reactions to human resource management decisions. Data were collected from 110 Chinese students in China and 82 American students in the U.S. A questionnaire containing vignettes depicting different human resource management practices was used to measure the impact of cultural values. Omnibus multivariate analysis of variance revealed significant differences between Chinese and Americans on the cultural values of power distance, collectivism/individualism, long-term and short term orientation, ascription/achievement, and the relationship to …
