Real operating (flexibility) options embedded in a technology investment are valuable because they allow management to take rational, value-adding actions that could favorably affect operational traits of the investment (timing, scale, scope, etc.). These options, however, are not inherent in technology investments. Rather, they usually must be carefully planned and designed to fit each investment differently. Building on concepts from the area of financial risk management, this paper presents a methodology for planning the creation of specific operating options designed to maximize the value of a technology investment in light of the risks underlying that investment. Part I of this Article provides a look at Internet business model patents in light of key patentability requirements mandated by the Patent Act. Part II traces the evolution of the analogous art component of the non-obviousness determination and illustrates how the malleability of the doctrine, as exemplified in several Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit decisions, has particular relevance to prior art definitions for Internet business model patents. Part III of this Article then examines the doctrine of equivalents and explores how the likelihood of improper application of this doctrine in the Internet business model context is increased. …

This dissertation deals with issues that arise in distribution channel management where channel partners face uncertain environments. The two essays address two related but slightly different ways channel partners often interact in environments characterized by uncertain demand. In the first essay, I look at voluntary information sharing arrangements between distribution channel partners, like those in the Category Management initiative in food retailing, in two different settings. The results from a simple bilateral monopoly channel indicate an asymmetry in retailer's and manufacturer's incentives to enter such information-sharing alliances. Only relatively sophisticated retailers find it profitable to enter such alliances, while manufacturers …

Office intranets are often neglected due to popularity of electronic commerce, and the company's investment in their public website. Standard instructions on how to develop a viable intranet site are not easily found and not likely taught.

This article examines several developments in electronic technology which appear to hold great potential for advancing human well-being and community organization and have already manifested some important portion of that potential in recent years. They are, in order of presentation, electronic communication and networking, electronic advocacy, fund raising support, geographic information systems and data base management. We conclude this brief article with a brief discussion of information poverty and the growing disparity of information haves and have-nots.

The Structure Of Debt And Active Equity Investors: The Case Of The Buyout Specialist, James F. Cotter, Sarah Peck

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

This paper examines the role buyout specialists play in structuring the debt used to finance the LBO and in monitoring management in the post-LBO firm. We find that when buyout specialists control the majority of the post-LBO equity, the LBO transaction is likely to be financed with less short-term and/or senior debt and less likely to experience financial distress. We also find that buyout specialists have greater board representation on smaller boards, suggesting that they actively monitor managers, and that for these transactions, using debt with tighter terms does not significantly increase the firm's performance. While the economy as a whole has been rapidly changing in response to technological innovation, real estate has evolved from a depository of wealth for households and assets for corporations into a major force in the debt and equity markets. In contrast, the role of real estate as a contributor to the nation's output and income has remained steady at approximately 11% of gross domestic product.

For decades, geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed but the precise determinants of such geographic differences in breast cancer development are unclear. Various statistical models have been proposed. Applications of these models, however, require that the data be assembled from a variety of sources, converted into the statistical models’ parameters and delivered effectively to researchers and policy makers. A web-enabled and GIS-based system can be developed to provide the needed functionality. Strategic Asset Allocation For Individual Investors: The Impact Of The Present Value Of Social Security Benefits, Steve Fraser, William Jennings, David King

This paper demonstrates the dramatic effect of social security wealth on individuals’ asset allocation. We first discuss why social security wealth should be included in portfolio asset-mix decisions. We then draw parallels between social security benefits and inflation-indexed treasury bonds to help quantify the present value of social security benefits. Finally, we show the portfolio impact of including social security wealth under several asset-mix decision rules. Excluding social security wealth from the asset mix decision results in sub-optimal portfolios. Including social security wealth provides an incentive for including more stock in the asset mix.

ERP and other systems projects are now commonly preceded or accompanied by reengineering efforts. Traditional reengineering projects use a 'clean sheet' approach, in which companies attempt to design ideal processes without being bound to existing processes and constraints. When reengineering is associated with information technology (IT) implementation, the more common approach is known as 'tool-driven' or 'system-enhanced' reengineering. Under this approach, the new processes are designed with explicit attention to the opportunities and constraints presented by the capabilities of the new information system.
