On October 18, 1997, Dr. Louis Goldberg, Professor Emeritus, The University of Melbourne, passed away at the age of eighty-nine. Dr. Goldberg's interest and support of accounting history spans more than five decades. He was awarded Life Membership in the Academy of Accounting Historians in 1989 and served on the editorial board of The Accounting Historians Journal. He was also a long-time member of the Accounting History Special Interest Group of the Accounting Association of Australia and New Zealand.

Accounting Historians Notebook

The Minehill and Schuylkill Haven Railroad Company (MSH) was one of the first commercial carrier railroads chartered in the U.S. The stock traded on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the company managers faithfully issued annual reports to the stockholders beginning in 1828. Fifteen annual reports were discovered at the Library Company of Philadelphia, covering most years from 1844-1864. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a content analysis of these annual reports.

As the United States has become an increasingly polyglot society, the need to reexamine the sufficiency of a single "reasonable man" standard is clear. Specifically, issues of race, gender, disability status, etc. provide a new context in which to judge the reasonableness of an individual's actions.

There is a well documented global requirement for some twenty million tonnes of edible sea foods from aquaculture in the next fifteen years. Most of the projected increase in production will need to be from mariculture because of limiting factors on land based aquaculture. Mexico's economic crisis of the early 1980s eventually led this country to adopt a new economic strategy. Mexico has opted for an export-based development strategy where governmental policies focus on creating an environment attractive to foreign investors. These policies have succeeded in attracting foreign direct investment to Mexico in record levels since 1987, predominately to the U.S.-Mexico border region. I argue in this dissertation, however, that these FDI flows have impeded small business growth and entrepreneurial drive along Mexico's northern border.

Budgeting methods are used to determine the profitability of investing in a 10 ha vineyard in the south-west of Western Australia. The problem of bias in the employment interview for applicants with disabilities was addressed with research to identify if a decision aid can increase the decision making accuracy of interviewers. A survey designed to allow participants to rate applicants with five disabilities for three jobs (with three essential functions listed for each job) was used to assess rating accuracy of two groups. Participants who received the decision aid in the form of a Guide to Interviewing People with Selected Disabilities were expected to have more rating accuracy than those participants without access to the Guide. Union Pacific/Southern Pacific Merger: Impact On Shippers, Paul D. Larson, H Barry Spraggins

Journal of Transportation Management

In the Summer of ‘96, Union Pacific Railroad merged with Southern Pacific to create the largest American railroad. Controversy continues to surround the merger. This paper reports results of a recent merger-impact survey. Survey respondents were rail and intermodal shippers. Among the interesting research findings are the following: (1) while shippers report a negative impact due to less rail competition, trackage rights granted to Burlington Northern/Santa Fe have failed to dampen this impact; (2) railroad service has deteriorated, but freight rates have remained stable; and (3) service problems are more severe for rail, as opposed to TOFC/COFC, shippers.

The paper presents a model inspired by the success of innovative logistics programs that have enhanced the relevance of academic programs by developing closer ties with logistics and transportation practitioners. Discussion focuses on examples that illustrate implementation of the model. An Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Driving Intermodal Transportation Usage, Philip T. Evers, Carol J. Emerson

The purpose of this study is to investigate certain aspects of a transportation choice model proposed by Krapfel and Mentzer (1982) pertaining to the influence of shipper perceptions on the selection of a mode. Specifically, this study attempts to identify the impact that shipper perceptions of intermodal and over-the-road truck service, as well as other characteristics of the shipper, have on intermodal usage. The research findings support the notion that shipper perceptions affect modal usage and indicate areas in which intermodal providers should focus their attention to improve intermodal usage.

Some Propositions Regarding Rail-Truck Intermodal: An Empirical Analysis, Paul R. Murphy, James M. Daley

Using data compiled from a recent of businesses located in a major metropolitan area, the present paper evaluates a series of propositions concerning rail-truck intermodal. In general, the study results tend to support the various propositions, and key findings suggest that users and nonusers of intermodal transportation have different perceptions about the quality of, and barriers to, intermodal service.
