When you go off on vacation you feel as if the world stops and nothing of great significance takes place. When you return you quickly reacquaint yourself with the realities, realize that many things did happen of questionable significance, and very quickly you are back into the flow and the cool mountains of New Mexico take on a dreamlike quality.

A few weeks ago Addis and The Sporting News sponsored a symposium in New York City on the issue of job opportunity for minorities in management level positions in sport. One of the participants in the discussion was Bill Rhoden, columnist for The New York Times and The Sporting News. That symposium and several of Bill Rhoden's columns over the past few weeks have reminded me of a number of issues which have been raised in the past few years, but have not been adequately addressed in most professional and intercollegiate sports establishments.

As managers contemplate the adoption of SFAS 121, Accounting for the Impairment of Long-Lived Assets and for Long-Lived Assets to be Disposed of, most will be considering the impact of these new requirements on their particular reporting situation. This effect is important to managers because whenever the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issues a new statement, financial statements need to be in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). New requirements also cause tax and auditing concerns, effects on financial statement users, and extra costs to companies involved. The FASB's intent in issuing SFAS 121 was to force more …

Journal of Transportation Management

Carriers and industry analysts agree that driver turnover is the largest problem facingthe industry today. Truck drivers regularly move from one trucking company to another or they change to careers out of the industry. Opinions for high driver turnover are diverse, such as long hours and extended time away from home, poor advancement opportunities, a lack of respect, and old/uncomfortable equipment. In this article the authors examine the truck driver turnover problem from an internal marketing perspective. Membership, socialization, identity, structural, interpersonal, and environmental issues are examined as primary influences on desired quality of truck driver employment. Suggestions are made …

Interest in the role of video supers-superimposed video presentations of verbal information-has grouwn among consumers, advertisers, the television networks, and public policymakers, as supers have become prevalent in television commercials. The authors empirically address the communications efficacy of video supers in a sample of 200 different commercials that contain video supers Drawing on a theory of modality effects, the authors examine the comprehensive of video supers relative to commercial content. The authors develop hypotheses and analyze structural determinants of video super comprehension, such as presence of a voice-over, rate of presentation, and presentation size. The findings are supportive of the …

Aaron Dennison started a small family business in Brunswick, Maine in 1844 for his father, Andrew. Initially, the only product was hand constructed paper boxes for watch makers and jewelers. Eliphalet Dennison, another son, bought the business from his father and moved it in 1855 to Roxbury, Massachusetts for its larger markets. There he continued making boxes but expanded into tags and later into crepe and other paper products. To acquire larger facilities and access to a railway siding, H.K. Dyer, president from 1892-1909, moved the company to Framingham, Massachusetts in 1896. The company also had a factory in Marlboro, …

Export Carrot Production Capability Study, Dennis Phillips

Horticulture research reports

A survey was conducted by personal interview of nearly 80 per cent of Western Australian export carrot growers to determine the range of business profiles and production practices prevailing in the industry in 1996-97. The study provided significant information which the industry can use to guide future development and to benchmark its performance.

The industry was characterised by a high level of Australian ownership and a healthy mix of family and corporate ownership and vertical integration. Capital investment in production was high, potentially inhibiting new entrants to the industry.
