Research Note Perceptions Are Reality: How Family Meetings Lead To Collective Action, Timothy G. Habbershon, Joseph H. Astrachan
Faculty Articles
Family meetings develop family unity through the creation of perceived shared beliefs. The article presents a model with strategic implications showing how shared beliefs lead to collective action, which leads to outcomes and then the reassessment of the shared beliefs. Finally, the article reports on initial research on the reliability of instruments developed to explore one aspect of this model: The creation of shared beliefs through family meetings. The initial results suggest that perceptions of shared beliefs may be an important stimulant of collective family activity.

Even though there seems to be almost unanimous acceptance among countries that professional accountants must be educated, pass some professional examinations, and have some practical experience, the recipe for the quantity of each of the 3 ingredients varies from one country to another. To determine if international reciprocity is possible, the professional accountancy qualifications of 8 countries were surveyed: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and the US.

Measuring External Shocks To The City Economy: An Index Of Export Prices And Terms Of Trade, Anthony Pennington-Cross

This paper details the construction of an index of export goods prices (the Export Price Index or EPI) for a panel of 196 metropolitan areas from 1977 to 1992. The EPI is an indicator of external demand shocks to the city economy which does not suffer from the causal ambiguity of the endogenous indicators such as income, employment or output. The creation of an index of aggregate export prices, the EPI, for the panel of areas provides both academicians and policy analysts with a new exogenous indicator that identifies demand price innovations and the terms of trade shocks …

Determinants Of Currency Composition Of External Reserves In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Newman C. Oputa

This paper discusses the determinants of the currency composition of external reserves in Nigeria. The empirical analysis reveals that the main factors influencing the currency composition of external reserves in Nigeria are international trade transactions and currency composition of external debt, while reserve adequacy aided the diversification into more currencies. Exchange and interest rates were relatively significant in the share of each currency in the reserve basket. A review of CBN's external reserves policy confirmed that vigorous diversification was embarked upon when there was remarkable increase in the level of the reserve. Effect Of Foreclosure Status On Residential Selling Price: Comment, Thomas M. Carroll, Terrence M. Clauretie, Helen R. Neill
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
In this comment we examine the conclusion by Forgey, Rutherford and VanBuskirk (1994) “that the foreclosed properties sold at a 23% discount,” using a sample of nearly 2,000 residential property sales from the Las Vagas, Nevada area. We found that when not controlling for location with a set of dummy variables for zip codes, HUD foreclosed properties sold for between 12.18% and 13.96% below a random sample of properties not within one block of foreclosed properties. When controlling for location, using a set of thirty-one dummy variables for zip codes, the foreclosure discount fell to between 8.45% and 9.72%. When …

A survey was conducted of reviewers' opinions of the proper rules for when and how references should be used to support points made in research articles in applied psychology and related fields. The reviewers opinions were distilled into a set of rules or guidelines for proper referencing in research articles. These rules are presented.

The article focuses on Asian countries that have experienced economic growth over the past 50 years including Hong Kong, China; Japan; Singapore; South Korea and Taiwan. With the exception of Hong Kong, the economic success of the Asian countries has been attributed to the interventionist framework. Export-orientation is one strategy that is most associated with the success of the five Asian countries. The export-oriented strategy helped the five Asian countries in many ways. The ensuring growth of employment enabled the country to save and accumulate capital for reinvestment. The export-oriented strategy also positively affects the competitive advantages of the country. …

A Variance Decomposition Analysis Of The Information In The Term Structure, Louis H. Ederington, Jeremy C. Goh

Based on a market efficiency assumption, we use variance decomposition analysis is to separate information in the term structure on expected future spot rates from information on time-varying term premia and to examine the market's ability to forecast both future rate changes and excess returns on long versus short securities. We find that fluctuations in the slope of the yield curve are due more to changing term premia than to fluctuations in expected future spot rates and that the market correctly predicts about 40 percent of the month-to-month changes in spot rates, a considerably higher percentage than that found by …
