Current events and fiscal constraints have focused DoD planners' attention on reducing logistics costs and improving efficiency while maintaining effective combat operations support. Military leaders are seeking private industry best practices that may help the DoD achieve these goals. Two commercially successful business practices that may help the DoD achieve its goals are cross-docking and Activity-Based Costing (ABC). Cross-docking is a commercially proven approach to material distribution through a distribution center that can help reduce inventories, speed material flows, and cut related logistics activity costs. The primary role of the United States Air Force (USAF) logistics planner is to plan for war. For the wing level logistics planner, an important war planning product they are responsible for is the base support plan (BSP). The BSP is the installation level plan to support unified and specified command wartime operations plans, as well as MAJCOM supporting plans. Two Armstrong Laboratory sponsored initiatives exist to automate and enhance some of the BSP processes: the Survey Tool for Employment Planning (STEP) and Beddown Capability and Assessment Tool (BCAT). Results from the 1996 summer nonresident travel survey for all visitors as well as characterized by first time/repeat visitors, primary reason for trip to Montana, and type of travel group. Travel group characteristics, purpose of trip to Montana, attractions to Montana, length of stay and types of accommodations, information sources, activity participation, flexibility of travel plans, pre-trip planning, and demographics are provided for each type of traveler.

Ruminating On The U.S. Open Tennis Championships, Richard C. Crepeau

Looking back to the first radio commentary I did six years ago, the subject was the U.S. Open Tennis Championships where the stellar performance that year by Jimmy Connors, especially in his late night match against Patrick McEnroe, was such a contrast with the sorry performance by the over hyped Andre Agassi. Connors has since moved on to the seniors tour while Agassi's career remains largely the story of the failure to live up to the hype and the potential.
