Since Independence, Small Scale Industries (SSIs), have been playing a stellar role in the economic development of the country. SSIs account for more than a third of the total manufacturing output and generate almost 35 per cent of the country's exports. Importantly, they provide employment to more than ten million Indians. International competition among metrology laboratories, as well as their customers, has intensified the incentive to seek either accreditation to ISO Guide 25 or ISO 9000 quality system registration for the laboratory. The debate continues as to which is more beneficial to the laboratory and its customers once the decision is made to pursue one or the other. This study addresses the advantages and limitations of each, and how best to prepare for complying with ISO standards. The literature was reviewed and ISO certification experts were questioned about these issues. The results were combined with new applications of existing operations research …

Corporate Governance In India: Disciplining The Dominant Shareholde, Jayanth Rama Varma

Corporate governance problems in India are very different from that of, say, the US or the UK where the issue is essentially that of disciplining the management who have ceased to be effectively accountable to their owners. The problem of the Indian corporate sector is that of disciplining the dominant shareholder and protecting the minority shareholders. The role of two such disciplining forces - the regulator and the capital market has been discussed.

In October 1996 the Office of Policy and Planning in Agriculture Western Australia undertook a collaborative research project on ‘Agriculture in the Western Australian Economy’ with the Economic Research Centre (ERC), University of Western Australia. One of the main objectives of the project was to ensure that the new input-output (I-O) table for Western Australia being produced by the ERC, would incorporate agricultural industries in a manner that corresponded to the different industry programs of Agriculture Western Australia. The resulting 111-sector WA table is based on the national I-O table for 1992-93 and is presented in Volume 2 of the …

The Coexistence Of Multiple Distribution Systems For Financial Services: The Case Of Property-Liability Insurance, Allen N. Berger, J. David Cummins, Mary A. Weiss

Property-liability insurance is distributed through a direct-writer system, where agents represent one insurer, and an independent- agency system, where agents represent several insurers. Independent-agency insurers have higher costs than direct writers. The market- imperfections hypothesis attributes the coexistence of the two types of insurers to impediments to competition, while the product-quality hypothesis holds that independent-agency insurers provide higher-quality services. We measure cost efficiency and profit efficiency for property-liability insurers and find strong support for the product-quality hypothesis, implying that independent-agency insurers produce higher-quality outputs and are compensated by higher revenues.

The Effects Of Nutrition Package Claims, Nutrition Facts Panels, And Motivation To Process Nutrition Information On Consumer Product Evaluations, Scott B. Keller, Mike Landry, Jeanne Olson, Anne M. Velliquette, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In a laboratory experiment using a between-subjects design, the authors examine the effects on nutrition and product evaluations of nutrition claims made (e.g., "99% fat free; " "low in calories") on a product package, product nutrition value levels, and enduring motivation to process nutrition information. Enduring motivation is shown to moderate the effects of product nutrition value on consumer evaluations. Also, nutrition claims interact with product nutrition value in affecting consumer perceptions of manufacturer credibility. Minimizing Post-Production Weight Growth In Tanks Using A Decision Analysis Model, Michael F. Cochrane

Post-production weight growth of tanks is an historic problem for the military. Tanks are difficult to transport because of their weight, and post-production modifications tend to cause this weight to increase over the lifecycle of the tank. In this thesis, a computer model is constructed which uses influence diagrams to model tank weight growth as a probabilistic process. Historical weight data for the MI Abrams tank program is used to derive probabilities for the model. The model is used to predict tank weight growth over both the short and long term with the goal of understanding more about how and …

This article presents research on the growing number of health care providers using the Internet as a health care marketing tool in the U.S. The author notes that the Internet is changing the way consumers seek healthcare related information as well as the way it can be provided to them. Environmental legislation has created potential liability for retailing franchisees that purchase previously contaminated land. Faced with a decision to distance itself from the site selection process or incur the added costs and potential pricing impacts of greater involvement in the process, franchisors have strong incentives to reduce franchisee support. This reduction in support has detrimental implications for both franchise policy and environmental policy. The test construction literature has emphasized the randomization of answers within multiple-choice items as a way to eliminate test construction bias. This study examines the answer placement bias of the multiple-choice portion of the 1987 - 1992 CIA, CMA, and CPA exams. The results indicate a consistent bias toward the "A" position in the CIA exam and against the "A" and "E" positions on the CMA exam. Also, all three exams were found to have significantly fewer correct answer runs (e.g., four "A's" in a row) than would be expected from the random placement of answers. A discussion of test …
