The Overreliance On Analyst Experience In The Selection Of Requirements Elicitation Techniques., Robert M. Fuller, Christopher Davis

This study applies theory Channel Expansion Theory to assess factors that influence analyst perceptions of the richness of requirements elicitation techniques. These perceptions of richness are of interest as communication research has shown that richness perceptions are related to selection and effective use of communication channels. We find that an analyst's experience with a requirements elicitation technique is the strongest predictor of perceived richness from using that technique. Experience communicating with the informant was only marginally significant. User Reactions To Information Technology: Evidence From The Healthcare Sector., Anol Bhattacherjee, Christopher Davis, Neset Hikmet, Varol O. Kayhan

This paper examines the diverse nature of user reactions to information technology (IT) within the social-historical context of its organizational use. Employing activity theory as a conceptual framework, we conduct an interpretive analysis of physicians work, perceptions, and IT usage experience at a large community hospital to understand why some of these physicians were favorably disposed toward IT use while others were not. This study complements prior positivistic analyses of IT usage that explain similarities in usage patterns within a user population, by using an interpretive lens to explain differences in usage patterns. The Best Defense Is A Good Offense : Using Human Resource Management Proactively To Minimize The Threat Of Litigation From Wrongful Termination Cases., Richard O. Parry, Treena L. Gillespie, Sharon Segrest

When it comes to employment-related litigation, human resource (HR) professionals are a business organization's first line of defense. Lawsuits by employees alleging wrongful termination, harassment or discrimination constitute a significant threat to a business. Although many employees are at-will meaning that they can be terminated at any time for any reason, exceptions exist which create the basis for wrongful termination claims. These exceptions also raise the business' risk to be sued for termination decisions. Prior research on technological frames indicates that manyof the difficulties associated with systems implementation stem from differences in the meanings users, managers, and system developers attribute to automation projects. Although the concept of technological frames has been used to explore the bases for intergroup conflict during implementation, it is also a useful device for probing more deeply into the effects complex systems have on users' perceptions of their work and the role-altering effects of new technologies. Currently, there is neither a commonly-accepted definition of information systems (IS) quality nor a convergence of perspectives on quality approaches. The IS community has focused on the various contributions of people, delivery processes, development philosophies and methods. This publication is an attempt to capture the evolution of distributed higher education over the last decade by tracing the applications of new technologies funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). As FIPSE surveyed the current state of distance/distributed education, there existed an opportunity to help post econdary education make the transition to this new generation of distance education made possible by the explosive growth of the Internet and other new technologies. Implicit Sources Of Bias In Employment Interview Judgments And Decisions., Sharon Segrest, Pamela L. Perrewe, Treena L. Gillespie, Bronston T. Mayes, Gerald R. Ferris

This study empirically examined implicit sources of bias in employment interview judgments and decisions. We examined two ethnic cues, accent and name, as sources of bias that may trigger prejudicial attitudes and decisions. As predicted, there was an interaction between the applicant name and accent that affected participants' favorable judgments of applicant characteristics. The applicant with the ethnic name, speaking with an accent, was viewed less positively by interviewers than the ethnic named applicant without an accent and non-ethnic named applicants with and without an accent. Furthermore, modern ethnicity bias had a negative association with the favorable judgments of the …
